A new approach which combines implicit surface scheme and recursive subdivision method is suggested in order to fill the holes with complex shapes in the polygon model. In the method, a base surface is constructed by creating smooth implicit surface from the points selected in the neighborhood of holes. In order to assure C$^1$ continuity between the newly generated surface and the original polygon model, offset points of same number as the selected points are used as the augmented constraint conditions in the calculation of implicit surface. In this paper the well-known recursive subdivision method is used in order to generate the triangular net with good quality using the hole boundary curve and generated base implicit surface. An efficient anisotropic smoothing algorithm is introduced to eliminate the unwanted noise data and improve the quality of polygon model. The effectiveness and validity of the proposed method are demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of holes and polygon model.
Important factors in a casting mold are strength at the mold surface and gas permeability of the mold. This study investigates the effects of pre-pressure and sand particle hardness on gas permeability, with a constraint that the norm of a stiffness array at the mold surface should be higher than a certain value. The constitutive relation is obtained using a hypoplasticity model. This study is firstly attempted to investigate sand behavior in mold fabrication, and will give a theoretical base for fabricating better molds.

This paper presents a robust finite-time sliding mode control (SMC) scheme for unknown disturbance and unmodeled nonlinear friction and dynamics in the robotic manipulator. A finite-time SMC (FSMC) surface and finite-time sliding mode controller are constructed to obtain faster error convergence than the conventional infinite-time based SMC. By adding prescribed constraint control term to a finite-time SMC to compensate for unknown disturbance and uncertainties, a robust control scheme can be designed as well as faster convergence control. In addition, simpler controller structure is built by using feed-forwarding upper bound coefficients of each manipulator dynamic parameters instead of model-based control or adaptive observer to estimate unknown manipulator parameters. Simulation and experimental evaluations highlight the efficacy of the proposed control scheme for an articulated robotic manipulator.
Standard procedures for a fracture toughness testing require very severe restrictions for the specimen geometry to eliminate a size effect on the measured properties. Therefore, the used standard fracture toughness data results in the integrity assessment being irrationally conservative. However, a realistic fracture in general structures, such as in nuclear power plants, may develop under the low constraint condition of a large scale yielding with a shallow surface crack. In this paper, cleavage fracture toughness tests have been made on side-grooved PCVN (precracked charpy V-notch) type specimens (10 by 10 by 55 mm) with various crack depths. The constraint effects on the crack depth ratios were evaluated quantitatively by the developed scaling method using the 3-D finite element method. After the fracture toughness correction from scaling model, the statistical size effects were also corrected according to the standard ASTM E 1921 procedure. The results were evaluated through a comparison with the $T_0$ of the standard CT specimen. The corrected $T_0$ for all of the PCVN specimens showed a good agreement to within $5.4^{\circ}C$ regardless of the crack depth, while the averaged PCVN $T_0$ was $13.4^{\circ}C$ higher than the real CT test results.
A study on the topology optimization of a multi-spectral camera for space-use is presented. A multi-spectral camera for space-use experiences degradation of optical image in the space, which can not be detected on the optical test bench on the earth. An optical surface deformation of a primary mirror, which is a principal component of the camera system, under the self-weight loading is an important factor affecting the optical performance of the whole camera system. In this study, topology optimization of the primary mirror of the camera is presented. Total mass of the primary mirror is given as a constraint to the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the objective function and constraint are calculated by direct differentiation method. Optimization procedure is carried out by an optimality criterion method using the sensitivities of the objective function and the constraint. As a preliminary example, topology optimization considering a self-weight loading is treated. For practical use, the polishing pressure is included as a loading in the topology optimization of the primary mirror. Results of the optimized design topology for the primary mirror with varying mass ratios are presented.

This study presents experimental and numerical results of prestressed concrete composite beams with different casting and stressing sequence. The beams were tested under three-point bending and it was found that prestressed concrete composite beams could not achieve monolith behavior due to interface slippage between two layers. The initial stress distribution due to different construction sequence has little effect on the maximum load of composite beams. The multi-step FE analyses could simulate different casting and stressing sequence thus correctly capturing the initial stress distribution induced by staged construction. Three contact algorithms were considered for interaction between concrete layers in the FE models namely tie constraint, cohesive contact and surface-to-surface contact. It was found that both cohesive contact and surface-to-surface contact could simulate the interface slip even though each algorithm considers different shear transfer mechanism. The use of surface-to-surface contact for beams with more than 2 layers of concrete is not recommended as it underestimates the maximum load in this study.

In this paper, the optimization design module for the brake system of a vehicle is developed. As using this module, design variables, that minimize an object function and satisfy nonlinear constraint conditions, can be found easily. Before an optimization is operated, Plackett-Burman design, one of the factorial design methods, is used to choose the design variables which affect a response function significantly. Using the response surface analysis, second order recursive model function, which informs a relation between design variables and response function, is estimated. In order to verify the reliability of the model function, analysis of variances(ANOVA) table is used. The value of design variables which minimize the model function and satisfy the constraint conditions is predicted through Sequential Quadratic-Programming (SQP) method. As applying the above procedure to a real vehicle simulation model and comparing the values of object functions of a current and optimized system, the optimization results are verified.

In this paper, we propose a novel differential equation method for designing a total internal reflection (TIR) LED lens with double freeform surfaces. A complete set of simultaneous differential equations for the method is derived from the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, illumination models, Snell’s Law of ray propagation, and a new constraint on the incident angle of a ray on the light-exiting surface of the lens. The last constraint is essential to complete the set of simultaneous differential equations. By adopting the TIR structure and applying the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, it is expected that the proposed TIR LED lens can have a high luminous flux efficiency, even though its beam-spread angle is narrow. To validate the proposed method, three TIR LED lenses with beam-spread angles of less than 22.6° have been designed, and their performances evaluated by ray tracing. Their luminous flux efficiencies could be obviously increased by at least 35% and 5%, compared to conventional LED lenses with a single freeform surface and with double freeform surfaces, respectively.
