  • Due to a growing interest in searching and expressing knowledge effectively, knowledge management methods such as Topic Map are becoming more important. Topic Map organizes knowledge that is full of intricate relations, so maintaining and managing Topic Map consistently is very essential. TMCL and other constraint languages have limits as they can check simple constraints but can not support complex constraints like dependence constraints. Current constraint checking systems operating at the application level are also showing an inferiority in performance. In this paper, we extend TMCL based on the characteristics of other constraint languages in the information system field and related fields. We build and propose an RDBMS-based Topic Map constraint checking system to support the extended constraint language effectively. This new system handles complex types of constraints like dependency constraint as well as basic Topic Map constraints present in the TMCL. As the system examines each constraint it uses templates to generate queries for effective checking and overall shows a higher performance level than current systems.

  • In this paper we propose a model for checking integrity constraints of mobile databases called Three-Level (3-L) model, wherein the process of constraint checking to maintain the consistent state of mobile databases is realized at three different levels. Sufficient and complete tests proposed in the previous works together with the idea of caching relevant data items for checking the integrity constraints are adopted. This has improved the checking mechanism by preventing delays during the process of checking constraints and performing the update. Also, the 3-L model reduces the amount of data accessed given that much of the tasks are performed at the mobile host, and hence speeds up the checking process.

  • Automotive control software can be a source of critical safety issues when developers do not comply system constraints. However, a violation is difficult to identify in complicated source code if not supported by an automated verification tool. This paper introduces two possible approaches that check whether an automotive control software complies API call constraints to compare their performance and effectiveness. One method statically analyzes the source code and explores all possible execution paths, and the other utilizes a model checker to monitor constraint violations for a given set of constraint automata. We have implemented both approaches and performed a series of experiments showing that the approach with model-checking finds constraint violations more accurately and scales better.

Abstract To cope with the complexity of handling integrity constraints, numerous researchers have suggested to use a rule-based system, where integrity constraints are expressed as rules and stored in a rule base. A rule manager and an integrity constraint manager cooperate to check the integrity constraints efficiently. In this approach, however, the integrity constraint manager has to monitor the activity of an application program constantly to catch any database operation. For each database operation, it has to check relevant rules with the help of the rule manager, resulting in considerable delays in database access. We propose to insert the constraints checking code in the application program directly at compile time. With constraints checking code inserted, the application program can check integrity constraints by itself without the intervention of the integrity constraint manager. We investigate what kind of statements require the checking of constraints, show how the compiler can detect those statements, and show how constraints checking code can be inserted into the program, by modifying the GCC YACC file for Objectivity/C++, an object-oriented database programming language.

  • UML is a semantically rich language, but it is difficult to ensure consistency of the diagrams you have written. Therefore, in this paper, we propose cross checking rules to improve consistency between UML diagrams, especially between UML static diagram and dynamic diagram. We use metamodels in order to more clearly reflect interactions of UML elements in the checking rules and use OCL(Object Constraint Language) to accurately represent the checking rules. By comparing with the well-formedness rules of UML specification, we focus on consistency of UML diagrams. And we derive metamodels of static diagram and dynamic diagram, analysis the relationships of UML diagrams and finally, we test the usability of derived rules through a case study.

  • A client stores data in the cloud and uses remote data checking (RDC) schemes to check the integrity of the data. The client can detect the corruption of the data using RDC schemes. Recently, robust RDC schemes have integrated forward error-correcting codes (FECs) to ensure the integrity of data while enabling dynamic update operations. Thus, minor data corruption can be recovered by FECs, whereas major data corruption can be detected by spot-checking techniques. However, this requires high communication overhead for dynamic update, because a small update may require the client to download an entire file. The Variable Length Constraint Group (VLCG) scheme overcomes this disadvantage by downloading the RS-encoded parity data for update instead of the entire file. Despite this, it needs to download all the parity data for any minor update. In this paper, we propose an improved RDC scheme in which the communication overhead can be reduced by downloading only a part of the parity data for update while simultaneously ensuring the integrity of the data. Efficiency and security analysis show that the proposed scheme enhances efficiency without any security degradation.

  • The semiconductor industry has grown rapidly, and subsequently production planning problems have raised many important research issues. The reentrant flow-shop (RFS) scheduling problem with time windows constraint for harddisk devices (HDD) manufacturing is one such problem of the expanded semiconductor industry. The RFS scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the makespan of jobs is considered. Meeting this objective is directly related to maximizing the system throughput which is the most important of HDD industry requirements. Moreover, most manufacturing systems have to handle the quality of semiconductor material. The time windows constraint in the manufacturing system must then be considered. In this paper, we propose a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) for improving chromosomes/offspring by checking and repairing time window constraint and improving offspring by left-shift routines as a local search algorithm to solve effectively the RFS scheduling problem with time windows constraint. Numerical experiments on several problems show that the proposed HGA approach has higher search capability to improve quality of solutions.

  • This research develops a low-cost and high accurate kinematic calibration method for a parallel typed machining center tool. A planar table is used for a mechanical fixture restricting the platform to place at the constrained pose and a low-cost and high accurate digital indicator is employed for a device checking if the constrained movement is satisfied within the established range. The kinematic parameters calibrated with respect to a single plane aren't influenced from the misalignment of the plane. A parameter observability is successfully obtained even through one planar constraint, which guarantees that the kinematic parameters is estimated by minimizing the cost function.

  • Assuring integrity of permission assignment (PA) constraints is a difficult task in role-based access control (RBAC) because of the large number of constraints, users, roles and permissions in a large enterprise environment. We provide solutions for this problem using the conflict concept. This paper introduces the conflict model in order to understand the conflicts easily and to detect conflicts effectively. The conflict model is classified as a permission-permission model and a role-permission model. This paper defines two type conflicts using the conflict model. The first type is an inter-PA-constraints (IPAC) conflict that takes place between PA constraints. The other type is a PA-PAC conflict that takes place between a PA and a PA constraint (PAC) Also, the conditions of conflict occurrence are formally specified and proved. We can assure integrity on permission assignment by checking conflicts before PA and PA constraints are applied.
