  • It is well known that Japanese prosodic structure assumes mora below the syllable tier. Syllables with V or CV structure are counted as having one morn whereas those with coda consonants /-pp, -tt, -kk, -ss, -N/ or long vowels are counted as having two morns in Japanese. This study measured the acoustic duration of these special moras ('tokusyuhaku') produced by Tokyo dialect speakers to see if they are isochronic with V or CV. It also examined the production of Korean(Seoul/Kyungsang dialect) and Chinese native speakers loaming Japanese as a second language to examine how the learners' first language influence their second language. Finally, it examined how speakers of the Akita dialect, which is blown as a syllabeme dialect in Japanese, produced them. The results showed that intra-speaker variation as well as inter-speaker variation was observed in the production by Akita dialect speakers. Production of native speakers of Chinese and Kyungsang dialect of Korean -- which have vowel length contrast in their phonological systems -- showed a similar result to Tokyo dialect speakers, which implies the influence of the learners' first language on the acquisition of the second language.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate how the stem-final consonant clusters beginning with the liquid /ㄹ/ in Korean are realized in speech. Most scholars claim that the Korean stem-final consonant clusters are simplified and reduced to a stop consonant when pronounced. An attempt is made in this paper to verify the claim by conducting a series of listening tests and an acoustic analysis. The listening tests show that, contrary to the previous claims, some Koreans actually pronounce the stem-final consonant clusters as a whole. The result of the spectrographical study confirms our auditory observation. It has been found that the duration time taken by the stem-final consonant clusters is clearly longer when both consonants are pronounced than when only a liquid is pronounced. Similarly the vowel length of the previous syllable in the former is found to be longer in scale than the latter.

  • Recently, it Is required to develop OCR(Optical Character Reader) along with the progress of the information processing system for Hangeul. Characters have to be recognized clearly so that OCR can be applied, Structure analysis method and lump method are used for the recognition of characters, and OCR is now available for the recognition of printed characters and handwritten alphanumeric characters having simple structure by them However, It is known that there should be much more study on the development of handwritten Hangout's OCR. This paper proposed a new method for the handwritten Hangout character recognition. The units of Initial consonant of Hangout are separated and then recognized from the utilization of the position- Information of Hangeul's units from the normalized patterns using the regression line theory. It is carried out for the extraction of the block which exists in the virtual Initial consonant region from the normalized input patterns and the calculation on maximum value (${\beta}$) of likelihood after comparing the features of separated subpattern with the initial consonant dictionary.

  • Some children with Cleft Palate have shown a speech disorders after repaired surgical operation. A diagnostic evaluation of speech in children with cleft palates is important in preventing speech disorders. However, standard speech evaluation form for children with cleft palates has not yet developed in Korea. The purpose of this study is to make the standard speech evaluation form for children with cleft palates. Thirty control children group and ten children with cleft palate participated in this experiment. The test words are composed of meaningless two syllabic words containing the three different types of korean stop consonants,

  • How to teach intelligible, communicative pronunciation is a continuous question in the English education. Without good input, we can not expect good output. However, in EFL situation, it is very difficult to input the good English pronunciation, therefore, we have to find out the efficient and effective material for teaching pronunciation. One of the materials is song, because songs contain the linguistic and cultural traits of the language. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the reason why songs are good for teaching pronunciation. Koreans, who are syllable timed language users, have difficulties in English pronunciation of stress, rhythm, consonants cluster, linking or blending in connected speech. The 134 songs from wee sing are analyzed for how these traits show in songs. The result shows that we can acquire the traits easily and naturally through songs. And a lesson plan is offered as an example for teaching songs.

  • The degrees of aspiration in Korean [ㅅ] and [ㅆ] were measured in terms of VOT. The measurements were compared to the aspiration in Korean stops and affricates. It was shown that [ㅅ] should be classified as an 'aspirated' sound with Korean aspirated stops and affricates [$p^h, {\;}t^h, {\;}k^h, {\;}t{\int}$], contrary to the traditional classification of the sound as unaspirated. [ㅆ] was confirmed to be in the same group as other Korean 'tense' sounds. It was pointed out that there was a gap in the typology of Korean consonants. The gap was created by the lack of the unaspirated counterpart of [ㅅ]. It was suggested that an extinct Korean sound [$\triangle$] be considered as a possible candidate for the gap. Also a perception test was suggested for the further acoustical analysis of Korean [ㅅ] and [ㅆ].

  • Auditory discrimination which represents a very basic and important perceptual skill in children is a necessary condition for effective learning. It is necessary, therefore, to devise a standardized test tool for a reliable assessment of the auditory discrimination ability of children. The Korean Auditory Discrimination Test(KADT) is a tentative test tool that the authors have devised to meet such demand, i.e., to test the auditory discrimination ability of Korean children, both normal and hearing- and speech-impaired, between the ages of 4 and 8. The KADT consists of 40 pairs of words arranged in a systematic manner, of which thirty are 'minimal pairs' of words and the rest homophonous synonyms. The 30 minimal pairs are composed in such a way that major phonological contrasts involving consonants and vowels at initial, medial and final positions are duly represented. The test score will be determined by the number of right responses made by the children. Further attempts will be made to refine and improve KADT in future.

  • The aim of this study is to clarify the process of the sound changes of Japanese consonants (Dakuons) in the analysis of the transcriptions of Korean Source-Materials (i.e. Japanese textbooks for Korean and the records of travel in Japan) written in the 15-l8th centuries with the Korean writing system. Especially these records of travel in Japan are meaningful in that the process of change of Dakuon is shown in detail. The results are as follows. 1) In the 15th century, all Dakuons /g d z b/ had nasality. 2) The nasality of /z/ and /b/ disappeared in the 16th century. 3) The nasality of /d/ disappeared in the late 17th century.

  • A neural auditory system is studied for the aim of making better speech recognition systems. The cochlear mechanics is described. A IIR digital filter modeling of basilar membrane is discussed for the speech recognition. A multi-layer model of consonant recognition using phoneme detection filters and discriminant functions for feature estimation is constructed. This model shows more then 90% recognition rate in consonants.
