  • In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of secondary consolidation in the soft clay ground, oedometer tests were carried out in a normally consolidated condition, and the consolidation characteristics of the soft clay ground were examined by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) based on the Elasto-Viscous model proposed by Yoshikuni. The consolidation tests adjusted the consolidation load increment ratio(${\Delta}p/p_0$) to 1.0 for the four cases with initial consolidation pressures of 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 kgf/$cm^2$. The long-term consolidation tests were examined by the tests that changed the load increment ratio to clarify the effect of consolidation load increment. Although the numerical analysis was delayed in the primary consolidation process, from the result of the numerical analysis of the laboratory tests, the applicability of the Elasto-Viscous model was verified from the agreement of the secondary consolidation process. Based on the developing of model ground consist of general soft clay, influences of consoliation parameters on the consolidation characteristics were studied by the numerical analysis.

  • In recent years, finite strain consolidation theories including a mechanical nonlinearity and a reasonable coordinate system have been proposed and used in educations and practical consolidation problems. However, despite their reasonable ability to predict the consolidation behavior, their failure in the field can be attributed to the complexity of estimating and selecting proper parameters for simulating the consolidation phenomenon. In this study, therefore, the application of a piecewise-linear method was proposed to solve such problems including the assumption of the uniqueness in compressibility. Especially, the concept of reference curve was introduced to define the effect of strain rate dependency of clay. The applicability of the methodology is verified by several tests. It was found that the proposed method is applicable in restrictive ranges of study carried out in the laboratory. Finally it is expected that the verification in field consolidation problem has to be carried out through future study.

  • Accurate settlement estimation of dredged soft soil deposits is significantly important to prevent potential disasters during land reclamation. An application of the non-linear finite strain consolidation theory is inevitable in dealing with a very soft ground formation such as dredged fill. In this paper, a series of the sedimentation-consolidation test, self-weight consolidation test and CRS test were conducted to clarify sedimentation and consolidation characteristics of dredged fill in the Songdo area, Incheon. In addition, the settlement of dredged fill was numerically simulated using the PSDDF program. The dredged soil obtained from the Songdo area was classified as low-compressible silt (ML) based on USCS (Unified Soil Classification System), and the final bulking factors were estimated to be 1.56 and 1.17 by Yano's method and the numerical simulation, respectively. This difference is attributable to relatively high reclaimed height and large permeability of dredged soil in this region.

  • Isotropic (instant loading) and Ko (gradual increase loading) consolidation tests were conducted in triaxial test equipment using cylindrical sample (5.0 cm in diameter and 10.0 cm in height) on two marine clay deposits. The duration of primary consolidation was estimated by two curve fitting methods using measured strain. A differential equation of consolidation for drainage in the radial and vertical direction was solved by the implicit finite difference scheme. The results of two curve fitting methods were compared with the numerical solutions to evaluate the appropriate axial loading rate of Ko consolidation and the primary consolidation periods. In addition, primary consolidation periods of the samples with a diameter of 35 mm and a height of 70 mm were calculated. The relation of radial and vertical consolidation coefficients is also presented.

  • In the case of creating a site in the reclaimed land (public waters), due to the nature of the coastal sedimentary ground, large-scale construction materials are required, It is necessary to utilize soft clay, which is inevitably generated during construction of the complex, as a fill material in terms of resource recycling and economic aspects (reducing the amount of embankment required). In this study, changes in the consolidation characteristics of cut-out disturbed soft clay due to the recycling of soft clay soil were identified, and a consolidation settlement design plan was proposed. Through the results of the consolidation test of the study site, the change in consolidation characteristics (compression index reduction, precede load uncountable) due to disturbance (cutting) was confirmed, the method of calculating (consolidation settlement) the filling clay layer as the composite target layer (consolidation target layer, loading load layer) was analyzed as a result consistent with the actual behavior.

  • The vacuum preloading method has been used in many countries for soil improvement and land reclamation. However, the treatment time is long and the improvement effect is poor for the straight-line vacuum preloading method. To alleviate such problems, a novel combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method for shallow ground treatment is proposed in this study. Two types of traditional vacuum preloading and combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading tests were conducted and monitored in the field. In both tests, the depth of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) is 4.5m, the distance between PVDs is 0.8m, and the vacuum preloading time is 60 days. The prominent difference between the two methods is when the preloading time is 45 days, the injection pressure of 250 kPa is adopted for combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading test to inject air into the ground. Based on the monitoring data, this paper systematically studied the mechanical parameters, hydraulic conductivity, pore water pressure, settlement and subsoil bearing capacity, as determined by the vane shear strength, to demonstrate that the air-pressurizing system can improve the consolidation. The consolidation time decreased by 15 days, the pore water pressure decreased to 60.49%, and the settlement and vane shear strengths increased by 45.31% and 6.29%, respectively, at the surface. These results demonstrate the validity of the combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method. Compared with the traditional vacuum preloading, the combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method has better reinforcement effect. In addition, an estimation method for evaluating the average degree of consolidation and an empirical formula for evaluating the subsoil bearing capacity are proposed to assist in engineering decision making.

  • The implicit finite difference program was developed to evaluate the relationship between time and consolidation ratio within the zone of vertical drain effective radius. In the evaluation, the excess pore water pressure was considered to dissipate in two directions, namely, vertical and radial flow direction. To calculate subsoil stress increments in the soil due to multi-step embanking, the foundation soil was assumed to be an isotropic and homogeneous elastic medium and the initial excess pore water pressure was estimated by using Skempton's parameters whose condition is plane strain and elastic phase of pore pressure response within the soft ground. Regarding to the settlement estimation, immediate and primary consolidation settlements were calculated. The secondary or delayed consolidation settlement was not considered. Numerically calculated excess pore water pressure and settlements were similar to the measured data in situ. Thus, this method can be used to predict the time-consolidation ratio of each layer treated by vertical drain method.

  • To effectively improve soft soils, it is necessary to perform ground behavior characteristics and stability management through measurement activities when embankment of structures on soft soils is conducted. However, there are many differences between the actual ground behavior and the initial design plan. To address this issue, this study analyzed the measured settlement in the Yeongam-Haenam areas using the Hyperbolic method to predict the settlement based on the measurement data. From the completion time of the embankment in the target area, the final settlement was predicted through the change in the degree of consolidation by the measurement period. Furthermore, the final settlement according to the change in degree of consolidation was compared and analyzed through finite element analysis and field measurement.
