Investigation of the Korean Traditional Hobun(Oyster shell W.) Manufacturing Technique : Centering on Calcination Method (전통 호분(합분) 제조기술 연구 : 소성방법을 중심으로)

  • Hobun(Oyster shell W.) is a traditional material used as extender and white pigment from ancient times. The production method of it, however, has been discontinued. We have studied the traditional production method of Hobun through calcination of oyster shell, which is one of the traditional ways for preparing Hobun. Our work has the important meaning in that we can reproduce the manufacturing method of the discontinued traditional material and also it provides a solid background knowledge to stabilize the production and supply of Hobun for the cultural asset repairing materials. The result can be summarized as followings: The production processes of Hobun by calcination method are divided into 4 steps - calcination ${\rightarrow}$ slaking(pulverization) ${\rightarrow}$ separating fine powder by submergence in water ${\rightarrow}$ drying. In calcination step, the temperature is required to exceed $700^{\circ}$ to get pure white color of Hobun, since organic materials in the shell cause the final powder to be less white below $600^{\circ}$. And the calcination methods produce significant amount of calcium hydroxide, which is incongruent for pigment materials without additional treatments. The experimental study also demonstrated that the additional treatment process introduced in traditional paintings can be a probable process since the calcium of potassium hydroxide is observed to be promoted by this treatment. It is also concluded that, the calcination method of Hobun is appropriate for a small amount and high quality production.

A Study on the Anchorage Length of Metal Stiffeners for the Structural Reinforcement of Stone Cultural Heritages (석조문화재의 구조적 보강을 위한 금속보강재 정착길이 연구)

  • It was the 1900s that the damaged materials of stone heritages began to be preserved and managed for the purpose of reuse, especially since cement, an inorganic material, began to be used during the Japanese colonial period. Epoxy resin, an organic material, was introduced to architecture around the turn of the 1990s, and has been being used across the board. In particular, filler mixtures began to be aggressively used for the structural reinforcement of severed materials. The problem was metal stiffeners used for structural reinforcement. The anchorage length varied depending in different conservation scientists, and as a result the secondary damage was apt to occur in the materials. In this study, hereat, a calculation was made of the most effective anchorage length with the minimization of material damage. The results were as in the following: the anchorage length of an 8-milimeter-across (ø8) metal stiffener was found to be most effective at 60.88mm. Those of ø12 and ø16 were 60.88mm and 91.32mm respectively. In the case of other calibers, the anchorage length was calculated by a formula ${\ell}_d=a_tf_y/u{\Sigma}_0$. In the experiment, helically-threaded round bars were used as metal stiffeners in order that they could bear surcharge loads such as bending, shear and constriction.

Research on Functional Paper by using Traditional Dyestuffs (전통 염색 재료를 활용한 기능성 종이 연구)

  • Dyestuffs extracted from fifteen kinds of natural dyeing materials were researched on their antimicrobial performance against 3 kinds of bacteria and 2 kinds of fungi in order to develop conservation/storage materials of traditional and natural dyed papers. The three types of mordants were evaluated by using the same method and then mixed with the dyestuffs to research their antimicrobial performance. With those results, dyed paper was made by mixing mordants with 9 kinds of dyestuffs with excellent antimicrobial performance. Among the dyed papers, Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis, Phellodendri amurense, Rhus javanica and Acer ginnala multiple mordant papers were found to have an antibacterial quality against fungi, while, in the insect repellent experiment using termites, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense dyed papers were found to have insect repellent qualities. Also, with regard to the research result about the affect of dyeing paper on other materials like metal, Coptis chinensis have relatively stable qualities. Also, the three types of dyeed paper by Cotinus coggygria, Coptis chinensis and Phellodendri amurense, were found to have a tendency to remove harmful gases. Not only can these dyed papers be used for making storage box for cultural properties to prevent various organic artifacts from bio-damaging, but they can also be utilized as functional finishing materials in various spaces.

Conservation Treatment and Material Analysis of Amber Relics Found in the Huryeongtong of Geumsansa Temple (금산사 후령통(候鈴筒) 내 발견 호박유물의 과학적 분석과 보존처리)

  • For safe conservation treatment of damaged accessory relics that were unearthed, the quality of the material should be accurately identified through a nondestructive analysis and failure analysis. This study provides the basic conservational scientific data regarding material analyses and conservation treatment that were conducted for 11 relics, including amber and agate that were discovered during the repair of Geumsansa Temple's Hall of Maitreya Buddha and Left Attendant Buddhas in June 2008. An ultraviolet analysis, SEM-EDS analysis and FT-IR microscope analysis revealed that the physical and chemical characteristics of the 11 relics are the same as those of amber. It is inferred that the cracks and exfoliation of the surface of most amber relics is attributable to darkening of the color due to C=C bond oxidation. It is also assumed that cracks and exfoliation occurred from the weathered layer on the amber surface. As such, it is appropriate to engage in conservation treatment of the damaged amber relics by using $Paraloid^{(R)}$ B67 reinforcing agent that is diluted in nonpolar solvent. The greatest care is needed for future handling of organic artifacts.

  • The archaeological site of Nambuk-dong, Yongyu Island, Incheon which goes back to the Neolithic making it difficult to identify character of site, To get information for identifying utility and character of Open-Air Hearths within the finds, an organic residues analysis was conducted on soil and stone sample, sterol was analysis to determine the originality of archaeological sample, then percentage of fatty acid was identify the species of sample. As a result, it is assumed that No. 9, 10, 12 finds once had shellfish-related materials remain, No. 32 find seemed to have animal materials, No. 42, 43 finds were related to plant. In conclusion, it seems that open-air hearths of Yongyu Island had utility mainly related to making seafood.

Characterization of Xylanase of Fungi Isolated from Janggyeong Panjeon in Haeinsa Temple (해인사 장경판전으로부터 분리한 곰팡이의 Xylanase 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate occurence of microbiales density and characteristics of xylanase produced by those in Janggyeong Panjeon. Cladosporium cladosporioides H1, Penicillium citreonigrum H3, Penicillilum toxicarium H4, Aspergillus versicolor H6, Acremonium alternarium H7 isolated from Janggyeong Panjeon produced xylanase, which had different production rates and specialized activities in an acidic condition. Cladosporium cladosporioides H1, Aspergillus versicolor H6, and Acremonium alternatum H7 produced xylanase at a faster rate than other fungi. A xylanase of Cladosporium cladosporioides H1 and Penicillilum toxicarium H4 showed a high thermostability in an acidic condition. As results, this study may lead to the development of a strategy for preservation of organic cultural heritages.

Study on Application of Urethane Materials for Hardening of Metal Artifacts (금속유물 강화처리를 위한 우레탄 수지의 적용성 연구)

  • Urethane coating agent was made up in order to prevent corrosion on metal relics. This urethane coating agent was designed to solve problems linked to gloss and discoloration caused by existing acrylic coating agent which is mainly applied to metal relics. For the purpose, the urethane coating agent was made up which has lower gloss and slight color change. This coating agent formed thinner coating layer with excellent adhesion compared to the existing agent and has outstanding resistance to the surface oxidization of metal relics and water repellent on the surface. In addition, the agent is considered a stable coating agent replacing current acrylic coating agent with showing easy dissolution in organic solvents such as acetone, toluene and xylene with excellent result in reversible reaction.

A Study on the Manufacturing and Applicability of Rosin-based Epoxy Adhesives and Filling Material for Conservation of Wood Crafts (목공예품 보존용 송진 기반 에폭시 접착제 및 메움제의 제조와 적용성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we synthesized rosin-based epoxy resin and manufactured two components adhesives and epoxy putty using this epoxy resin. This study manufactured main element of adhesives for enabling it to form epoxide group by letting epichlorohydrin react to maleic anhydride modified rosin, and used room temperature curing type triethylenetetramine for hardener. The ratio between main element and hardener of of manufactured adhesives was 100 : 20, and main element and hardener of filling material were manufactured as clay type by mixing them with filler. Manufactured undiluted adhesives and filling material showed very stable result in the adhesive strength (3.06 MPa) and ultraviolet irradiation, showing outstanding result comparing to existing restoration adhesives. And it is considered a material having reversibility as it was dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone and toluene after being hardened, which showed a result that solved part of possible problems caused by restoration. As a result of use and application of manufactured adhesives and filling material for actual wood crafts, they showed excellent results in workability, stability, removability etc., and this study confirmed that the material can be used for and applied to various fields.

  • We proposed that the replicas be made as an alternative to achieve such reciprocal goals as the safe preservation of traditional costume relics and socio-educational realizations through exhibitions, etc., A replication was categorized for its purpose into a restoral replication a work based on the historical research of color and shapes as they were originally made and a current state replication . a production based on a minute record of the relics as they are excavated Then, we reported the reproduction process from the excavation to the exhibition on the excavated traditional costumes of Milchanggun's Jobok The purpose of a replication of relics is to record the relics experiencing the change resulted from the inevitable degeneration over time as organic cultural assets together with the substitution exhibition of relics and academic researches and so on. Accordingly, the above two methods are to be preceded by a deep and through research and study on the relics of replication. This study on the relics having an important cultural property value presents the preservation of tile cultural assets of traditional costume through the two replication processes and results and a flew pattern of exhibition.

A Consideration of Pigments name on Ceremonial writing of Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting, BongJeongsa (봉정사 영산회괘불도 화기에 기록된 안료명에 대한 고찰)

  • This study interpreted the chemicals of the pigments and the coloring techniques employed on Youngsan Ritual Ceremony Buddhist Painting through a nondestructive analysis method and a microscopic observation. Based on the interpretation, this study closely examined the chemical properties of the names of the coloring materials specified on the ceremonial writing of the Buddhist painting. It is estimated that lead white was used for the white pigments, orpiment and organic pigment for the yellow pigment, cinnabar/vermilion, minium, red ochre, and red dyes for the red pigments, malachite or atacamite for the green pigments, azurite and indigo for the blue pigments, and ink stick for the black pigments. The pigment names specified on the ceremonial writing are juhong, jungcheong, hayeop, whangdan, and whanggeum, and it was verified that juhong is cinnabar or vermilion, jungcheong is azurite, hayeop is malachite or atacamite, whangdan is minium, and whanggeum is a gold foil.
