  • From the students' point of view, this study was carried out to find out barriers to environmental conservation practice of secondary school students. According to the questionare and interview with secondary school students on barriers to environmental conservation practice at home, school, society and fellow-relation conditions and in personal psychology, the following findings were resulted. The major barriers to environmental conservation practice are (1) not doing environmental conservation practice of parents, friends and neighborhood, (2) having no interest in environment and environmental problems, (3) dirty and laboriousness of environmental conservation practice, (4) lack of environmental equipments, (5) the shortage of chance and time for environmental conversation practice, (6) lack of the inducement for environmental conservaton from school, (7) little effects of individual environmental practice, (8) a busy life, (9) shortage of the voluntary courage to practice for environmental conservation, (10) lack of compensation on the environmental conservation practice, (11) anti-environmental behavior among friends, (12) urging on edcation of parents. Those barriers related with home, school, society and fellow-relation anti-environmental conditions hold back environmental conservation practice of secondary school students. Those barriers are divided into three closely correlated tipes, (1) unpleasant traits of environmental conservation practice such as cleaning, recycling were linked with personal psychology, (2) lack of the social interest and practice for environmental conservation were linked with personal psychology, (3) the social atmosphere to urge on education was linked with students' busy life and the shortage of chance and time for environmental conversation practice. According to the results, attractive environmental education programs, home environmental education, cooperative environmental conservation programs, and inducements for environmental conservation are reguired of secondary school students to promote environmental conservation practice.

  • Since 1985, the Ministry of Environment has supported environmental education in schools through Environment Conservation Model School initiative. Selected elementary, middle, high schools and kindergartens were designated as model schools for environment conservation programs every 2 years to develop model cases that can be adopted at other schools to promote more structured and effective environmental education. These supporting programs played a central role in developing an environmental education model for formal schools and enhance the importance of environmental education in school curriculum. This study aims to evaluate the current statues of environment conservation model schools and support to environment conservation model school initiatives which have created basic framework to enable the continued development of environmental education. For the study, documents and reports from 1985 to 2005 were analyzed, which included operation guidelines for model schools, case studies, implementation reports along with the systematic analysis of documentations. Also this study included interviews and a survey with people responsible for running programs, and consultation processes with experts to address the current status and issues related to Environment Conservation Model School initiative. Based on the present status and issues, the recommendations for improving Environment Conservation Model School initiative were provided.

  • The objective of this research is to suggest the appropriate natural environment conservation facility management plan in Korea through development of the proper definition and categorization. Bearing the above objective, this study employs the comparison and analysis between domestic and international case studies. Furthermore, several survey methods have been adopted as check-lists for the evaluation of the sample sites and quantitative interviews with government officials and visitors to investigate their perspectives. On the consequence, firstly it was found that considering ecological types and objectives, the proper applicability of natural environment conservation facility could be disaggregated into three types of eco-park, eco-experience and education, and eco-observation facility. Secondly, based on the interview results, the necessity of provision of the natural environment conservation facilities was strongly found among the governmental officials and the residents groups who also expect the expansion of the facilities. Lastly, it appears necessary that the expansion of supporting projects and programs on the natural environment conservation facilities, the estimation and provision of the appropriate funding for monitoring, management and operation, the arrangement of resident experts, and activation of the nature environment education programs.

  • This study suggested a vegetation restoration plan for a coastal area where the ecosystem conservation fund return project, targeting the whole area of Dalmaji-gil, located in Haeundae, Busan. After distinguishing if it would be a proper site for the operation of the ecosystem conservation fund return project by analyzing the ecological environment, human environment, and the current status of land owners, the target species for vegetation restoration was determined, and the facilities and programs were selected in accordance with the spatial division of the biosphere reserve. The basic direction is as follows. First, is the expansion of green space and the securement of life habitats downtown. Second, is the conservation of core areas by separating the conserved area from the space for use. Third, is the establishment of ecological resting space and the reinforcement of an ecological educational programs. The significance of this study is to suggest a vegetation restoration plan of a coastal area, fully utilizing the existing vegetation of the subject area, by suggesting the land use and flow planning, environmental improvement (vegetation restoration) plan, life habitats establishment plan, planting plan, and hydrologic plan, facilities, maintenance, and monitoring plan based on the basic direction. This study would provide useful basic data for ecosystem conservation and restoration in the Korean Peninsula, surrounded by the ocean on three sides.

  • The objective of this study is to establish the method of conservation for traditional Korean settlements, based on the field surveys on the representative traditional settlements in Korea and China. The method is approached from grasping the conservation mechanism in which non-physical aspects deeply influence physical ones. The study has analyzed the characteristics and problems in the current methods of conservation for the traditional settlements, through comparing conservation practices at the World Heritage-class settlements such as Yangdong, Hahoi, and Oeam villages in Korea and Xidi-cun, Hong-cun, and Dangjia-cun in China. As a consequence of the study, the conservation method for the traditional Korean settlements is established as follows; Firstly, the conservation targets are classified into 4 types in terms of the relations of elements; individual, correspondent, sequential, and network elements. Secondly, the conservation strategies include the structuralizations of targets, by means of sequencing and networking. Thirdly, the conservation programs are made in consideration of the sustenance, transformation, replacement, and extinction of traditional use patterns.

  • The Wallace Collection in London (one of the national museums in the UK) has a gallery dedicated to conservation related displays. As well as permanent displays on the manufacturing techniques and materials of artifacts, there is a specially designed space for temporary conservation exhibitions. Through the example of the current conservation exhibition at the Wallace Collection and similar exhibitions and displays from other museums in the UK, this paper will study how the relationship and communication between the conservation profession and the general public have changed, from conservation as a behind-the-scenes and little-known activity to a closer interaction with the public and as a direct educational tool. The general function of a museum can be seen to have evolved from providing passive information to its visitors to offering more active and various forms of education. Conservation has developed with this change towards more awareness of the profession and its role in the preservation of cultural heritage through public outreach programs and displays.

  • The study is to investigate the effects of the constructivist instructional model using ARCS strategies (attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction) on the environmental conservation of environment textbooks of middle school. The subjects of this study were applied to 135 students sampled 2nd graders of a middle school in Busan. All students were divided three groups according to teaching strategies. The first experimental group is consisted of students who participated in the traditional teaching program, the second is students who participated in the constructivist teaching program, and the third is students who participated in the constructivist teaching program with ARCS strategies. The pre-conceptions test was administered to examine students' pre-conceptions before the instructions. After the instructions, students' acquisition of scientific conceptions, academic achievement, and learning motivation were also tested. On average, the degrees of academic achievement for the group with ARCS strategies were higher than those of other groups and shown a significant difference among three programs. Thus the constructivist teaching program with ARCS strategies was more effective programs in acquisition of environmental conservation conception and learning motivation than the two other teaching programs.
