  • This article aimed at understanding the characteristics of Swedish furniture design since 1980s in the reference to the major paradigm changes in the contemporary design field. For this, the authors examined the theoretical background of modern and post-modern design paradigms to identify today's design tendencies. And we used this frame in the analysis of the latest examples of Swedish furniture design. The main characteristics of Swedish furniture design since 1980s included 'furniture as art object', 'the succession of the Swedish Modern (neo-modernism)', and 'conscious design for sustainable development'. These could be viewed as the consequences of the choices that the Swedish furniture industry and designers made during the last decade, that was to take plurality and contradiction as the accompanying values of the traditional Swedish modern design.

  • The classical Geometric Brownian motion (GBM) model for the price of a risky asset, from which the huge financial derivatives industry has developed, stipulates that the log returns are iid Gaussian. however, typical log returns data show a distribution with much higher peaks and heavier tails than the Gaussian as well as evidence of strong and persistent dependence. In this paper we describe a simple replacement for GBM, a fractal activity time Geometric Brownian motion (FATGBM) model based on fractal activity time which readily explains these observed features in the data. Consequences of the model are explained, and examples are given to illustrate how the self-similar scaling properties of the activity time check out in practice.

  • The negative direct-maternal genetic correlation $(r_{dm})$ for weaning weight is inflated when data are analyzed with model ignoring sire-by-year interactions (SY). An analytical study investigating the consequences of ignoring SY was undertaken. The inflation of negative correlation could be due to a functional relationship of design matrices for additive direct and maternal genetic effects to that for sire effects within which SY effects were nested. It was proven that the maternal genetic variance was inflated by the amount of reduction for sire variance; the direct genetic variance was inflated by four times the change for maternal genetic variance; and the direct-maternal genetic covariance was deflated by twice the change for maternal genetic variance. The findings were agreed to the results in previous studies.

  • Long back in 1972, it was shown that the sum of the squares of vertex degrees and the sum of cubes of vertex degrees of a molecular graph both have large correlations with total 𝜋-electron energy of the molecule. Later on, the sum of squares of vertex degrees was named as first Zagreb index and became one of the most studied molecular graph parameter in the field of chemical graph theory. Whereas, the other sum remained almost unnoticed until recently except for a few occasions. Thus it got the name "forgotten" index or F-index. This paper investigates extremal graphs with respect to F-index among the class of bicyclic graphs with n vertices and k pendant vertices, 0 ≤ k ≤ n - 4. As consequences, we obtain the bicyclic graphs with largest and smallest F-indices.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of FAI and to apply it in Korea. Method: Data were collected from 180 middle-age women. The questionnaire, which was originally developed by Schwartz, Jandorf & Krupp, was analyzed using Cronbach's a and factor analysis. Results: Cronbach's a for the FAI was .9198. As a result of item analysis, 27 items were selected from the total of 29 items, Items that showed low correlation with the total scale were excluded. Six factors were fixed from the data analysis performed using principle component analysis and varimax rotation. These six factors account for 65.3% of total variance. The first factor was global fatigue severity, and the second one was fatigue consequences. The other factors were method of fatigue reduction, fatigue caused by exercise, fatigue caused by routine activity, and fatigue caused by stress and depression, sequentially. Conclusion: The reliability and validity of FAI were verified.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the psychosocial adjustment process in adolescents with epilepsy in the context of Korean society and culture. Method: A grounded theory method was used for data collection and analysis. Participants for this study were 9 adolescents who regularly visited an epilepsy clinic in a university hospital. The data was collected through in-depth interviews during the period from November, 2002 to June, 2003. Data collection and analysis were performed simultaneously. Result: Twenty-three categories emerged including 'suffering', 'psychological stigma', and 'social isolation from one's peers'. Categories were divided into paradigms which consisted of conditions, actions/ interactions, and consequences. 'Reconstructing life' was the core category in this study. The theoretical scheme was described by organizing categories around the core category. Conclusion: This study provides a framework for the development of individualized nursing interventions to care for adolescents with epilepsy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to research how elder abuse affected the abuse results (self-esteem, depression, somatization) through coping strategies. Method: A convenient sample consisted of 499 subjects from 65 to 85 years old. Data was collected using structured questionnaires from July to August, 2002. The SPSS WIN 10.0 version was used for data analysis. Results: The pathway of elder abuse affecting elder's self-esteem was researched by passive coping, emotional abuse, financial abuse, and physical abuse as the variables that directly affected self-esteem. The pathway of elder abuse affecting elder's depression was researched by passive coping, aggressive coping, verbal abuse, and neglect as the variable that directly affected depression. The pathway of elder abuse affecting somatization was researched by neglect, emotional abuse, and aggressive coping as the variables that directly affected somatization. Conclusion: We should develop a systematized intervention program so that elders can learn positive coping in their abuse circumstance.

  • This paper focuses on the construct of relationship quality and the influence of relationship quality on relationship persistence, willingness to recommend. In this paper, we first conceptualize relationship quality from buyer-based perspective. Second, we introduce relationship persistence and willingness to recommend as consequences of relationship quality. A research model is examined with data collected from 267 firms in Gumi. The results indicate that relationship quality can be defined as a construct of trust, satisfaction, coadaptation, communication, and relationship quality has a significant positive impact on relationship persistence, willingness to recommend.

  • In this paper, we proposed small scale real-time operating system for embedded system. Real-time system is characterized by the severe consequences that result if logical as well as timing correctness properties of system are not met. On real-time system, real-time operating system allows real-time applications to be designed and expanded easily. Functions can be added without requiring major changes to the software. We design small scale real-time operating system for preemptive kernel, and design kernel component such as multitasking, scheduler, task priority, semaphore, inter-task communication, clock tick timer, ISR(Interrupt Service Routine) mechanism has low interrupt latency.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore whether the perceptions of materialistic realities of South Korean university students can be explained by individual experience and media use. We examined: 1) relative consequences of awareness of discrimination experience and amounts of time spent on genre-specific media on perceptions of materialistic realities, 2) whether cultural orientation (allocentrism, self-monitoring, and masculinity) influences explanatory factors of awareness of discrimination experience, 3) conditions of countervailing responses to materialistic reality. As a result of analyzing the online survey data of 330 university students in Seoul, the amount of time spent on the beauty or fashion genre and awareness of discrimination experience explained the perceptions of materialist reality in Korean society. Although the perceptions that affected the accommodative response did not affect countervailing response, innovativeness had an interaction effect with perceptions of materialist reality in only countervailing response. Finally, the implications of these findings were discussed.
