  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the articles published in the Journal of Korean Biological Nursing Science from 1999 when it began to 2010. Methods: One hundred seventy eight articles were reviewed using analysis criteria developed by the researchers. Results: Thirty-one percent of the research was supported financially. The most used key concepts were in the health and environment domain. For study design, experimental studies were 50.56%, especially quasi-experimental design was most frequently used (22.47%). Selection of subjects by convenience sampling was most frequent (82.58%). The major subjects of study were adult patients (25.68%). Forty-eight percent of the research had verbal consent and 11% had written consent from the participants. Exercise was common intervention (27.87%) in experimental studies. Physiologic indicators (31.65%), cognitive indicator (25.38%), psychosocial indicator (13.21%) and physical indicator (7.31%) were frequently used as a measurement tool. For data analysis, descriptive statistics (28.99%), t-test (15.06%), chi-square test (11.69%) and ANOVA (9.89%) were most frequently used. Conclusion: The number of research papers published in the Journal of Korean Biological Nursing Science has increased. Research topics varied and were mostly conducted on the basis of logical positivism. Further research should be more empirical enough to be utilized in an actual nursing care context.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze articles published in the Journal of East-West Nursing Research (JEWNR) to identify the current research status of East-West Nursing Research and recommend directions for future research. Methods: Using analysis criteria developed by the researchers, 104 articles published in JEWNR between 2009 and 2013 were reviewed. Results: 86.5% of the studies were quantitative, qualitative 3.85% and methodological research 9.61%. The majority of the quantitative research design was survey, 34.4% used experimental design. 62.5% of the experimental intervention was derived from Western nursing concept and 31.31% was from Eastern nursing concept. 40.6% of the research indicated that they have obtained verbal consent and 53.1% had written consent from the participants. The data collection settings were hospital (46.9%), school (26.0%) and community (25.0%). Conclusion: Both the number and quality of the published articles in the JEWNR has increased compared to the articles published between 2004 and 2008. Varied research methodologies and data analysis methods were utilized. Findings of this study indicate that strengthening peer review adhering to review guidelines will improve the quality of articles and promote the reputation of JEWNR as an international journal.

  • Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among Iranian women and mastectomy comprises 81% of surgeries for treatment of breast cancer. Mastectomy may create feelings such as deformation or impairment in patients, cause body-image disorder, and reduce sexuality and sexual activity which in turn may entail mental disorders. The study aimed to elaborate coping processes. Materials and Methods: A grounded theory method was used in conducting this study. Twenty Iranian participants undergoing mastectomy were recruited with purposive sampling. An open, semi-structured questionnaire were developed. Obtaining consent, conversations were recorded and immediately transcribed after each session. Data analysis was carried out with the constant comparative method using the Strauss Corbin approach. Results: Analyzing the collected data, the study came up with seven main categories which affected the coping process in patients with breast cancer, namely: reactions to mastectomy; loss and death contest; reconstruction of evaluation system; consent for undergoing mastectomy; reactions and troubles after loss; confrontation of loss and health; and reorganization and compatibility with changes. Conclusions: The results of the study indicated: when patients become informed of their breast cancer and the necessity of undergoing mastectomy as the treatment, they probably pass through seven categories to adapt after mastectomy. Having insight about them is likely to contribute medical personnel in leading patients to the highest degree of feeling healthy.

  • This research aims to analyze the ethical requirements and to find the problems for the publication guidelines of oriental medicine journals. A total of 13 domestic journals, related to oriental medicine and registered in 'National Research Foundation of Korea' list, were selected for the analysis of ethical requirements. We inquired the revised year of the publication guideline and the status of ethics committee of selected journals. The ethical requirements of publication guidelines were evaluated by categorizing them into Institutional Review Board(IRB), Helsinki Declaration, Informed Consent, confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and conflict of interest. In the case of revised year of the publication guidelines, the year of the most recently revised journal was 2011. However, the revised year of publication guidelines were not announced for three journals and a few journals haven't revised the publication guidelines since 2002. In the case of ethics committee status, four journals out of 13 journals maintained the ethics committee. In the result of ethical requirement analysis, nine journals included the information for confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and four journals included the information for Helsinki Declaration and Informed Consent. However, only one journal included the information for IRB and conflict of interest. Recently, the importance of clinical researches has been increased to prove the effect of oriental medicine scientifically and objectively. The clinical researches should be considered in scientific side and ethical side as well, because they have potential risks to human subjects. In this sense, announcing the ethical requirements in the publication guidelines can be one way to secure the morality of researches. Thus, it is required to prepare correct publication guidelines and ethical requirements in oriental medicine journals.

  • Although the rights of data subjects are defined through laws such as the Personal Information Protection Act, the consent process for collecting personal information by financial institutions is only formal and does not guarantee the right of self-determination of personal information. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the problem by information provision items of the current model, and to improve by changing the structure such as replacing the current method provided with the text with pictures and videos, and mandatory to provide the information subjects with personal information flow related images from the signing up stage. The improvement model is presented as a way to add a procedure to the current model. The effect was verified through a survey. It is hoped that the proposed model is actually reflected through the review to create an environment that can be a true meaning agreement that reflects the information subject's right to self-determination.
