  • In space weather forecast, it is important to determine three-dimensional properties of CMEs. Using 29 limb CMEs, we examine which cone type is close to a CME three-dimensional structure. We find that most CMEs have near full ice-cream cone structure which is a symmetrical circular cone combined with a hemisphere. We develop a full ice-cream cone model based on a new methodology that the full ice-cream cone consists of many flat cones with different heights and angular widths. By applying this model to 12 SOHO/LASCO halo CMEs, we find that 3D parameters from our method are similar to those from other stereoscopic methods (i.e., a triangulation method and a Graduated Cylindrical Shell model). In addition, we derive CME mean density (${\bar{\rho}_{CME}}={\frac{M_{total}}{V_{cone}}}$) based on the full ice-cream cone structure. For several limb events, we determine CME mass by applying the Solarsoft procedure (e.g., cme_mass.pro) to SOHO/LASCO C3 images. CME volumes are estimated from the full ice-cream cone structure. For the first time, we derive average CME densities as a function of CME height for several CMEs, which are well fitted to power-law functions. We will compare densities (front and average) of geoeffective CMEs and their corresponding ICME ones.

  • Various types of micro cone penetrometers have been developed by using strain gages for the layered soil detection. Strain gages, however, are affected by several factors such as temperature, self heating and lead wire length. In this study, micro cone penetrometers with 3~7mm in diameter, are developed by using FBG sensor to overcome the defects of the strain gage, and compensate the effect of temperature during penetration. In order to verifiy the accuracy and reliability of the developed FBG cone, the cone penetration test is performed on the layered soil. The tip resistance of FBG snesor shows excellent sensitivity, and can detect the interface of the layered soils with higher resolution. In addition, the 3mm micro cone penetrometer which is impossible cone diameter by using strain gages presents much higher sensitivity than the 7mm cone penetrometer. This study suggests that FBG sensor is a useful sensor for manufaturing the ultra small sized cone, and effectively detects the interface of the layered soil.

  • Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are major cause of the geomagnetic storms. To minimize the projection effect by coronagraph observations, we consider two CME cone models: an ice-cream cone model and an asymmetric cone model. These models allow us to determine three dimensional parameters of HCMEs such as radial speed, angular width, and the angle between sky plane and cone axis. In this study, we compare these parameters obtained from both models using 50 well-observed HCMEs from 2001 to 2002. Then we obtain the root mean square error (RMS error) between measured projection speeds and estimated ones for the models. As a result, we find that the radial speeds obtained from the models are well correlated with each other (R=0.89), and the correlation coefficient of angular width is 0.68. The correlation coefficient of the angle between sky plane and cone axis is 0.42, which is much smaller than what is expected. The reason may be due to the fact that the source locations of the asymmetric cone model are assumed to be near the center. The average RMS error of the asymmetric cone model (86.2km/s) is slightly smaller than that of the ice-cream cone model (88.6km/s).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability according to types of spreader and compatibility of accessory cone used in lateral condensation method. 120 plastic blocks with canal preformed were instrumented with K-,H-files and Gates-Gllidden bur. Shaped plastic blocks were divided into six experimental groups according to spreader and accessory cone used in lateral condensation. Then they were obturated by lateral condensation method without -sealer. Six experimental groups were as follows: Group 1 : Filling with #30 spreader & #25 gutta-percha cone Group 2 : Filling with #30 spreader & Fine accessory cone Group 3 : Filling with #3 spreader & #25 gutta-percha cone Group 4 : Filling with #3 spreader & Fine accessory cone Group 5 : Filling with #20,#30 spreader & #25 gutta-percha cone Group 6 : Filling with #2, #3 spreader & Fine accessory cone All the blocks were stored in 100% humidor at room temperature for 2 days. Each block was placed in centrifuged for 20 minutes at 3,000 rpm. Apical leakage was mesured from the apical foramen to the most coronal level of- dye leakage in millimeter under a stereoscope. The data were analysed by ANOVA. The obtained results were as follows; 1. In groups using two spreaders(Group 5,6), the linear leakage was less than one spreader using groups(Group 1-4). 2. Tn groups using two spreaders(Group 5,6), there was no significant difference in linear leakage between standardized -spreader group and non standardized group (p>0.01). 3. When one spreader was used(Group 1-4), standardized-spreader groups showed less linear leakage than nonstandardized spreader groups(P<0.01). 4. In case of using same spreader(Groupl,2 & Group 3,4), there was no significant difference in linear leakage according to accessory cone type. 5. It needs to use one more spreaders to increase apical sealability.

  • This study investigated both water content and penetration resistance of small cone of various clay soils that were made of Kaolinite and Bentonite with different mixing ratios and compared the results with those of the existing dynamic (Casagrande test) and static (fall cone test) tests directly. The comparison showed that the water content at the inflection point on a curve of water content and penetration resistance was very similar to the liquid limit from a fall cone test. The penetration resistance of small cone at the inflection point was 0.2 kPa, and it was ascertained that the water content at the inflection point represents a liquid limit of clay soils. From the study results, it was found that the penetration resistance of 0.2 kPa with the small cone can be an indicator of the liquid limit of clay soils in practice. Finally a test procedure to measure the liquid limit of clay soil based on a penetration resistance of small cone was proposed.

  • In this study we have performed ab initio computer simulations to investigate the conformational characteristics of the tetraethyl (1) and triethyl ester (2) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene. The structures of different conformational isomers for each compound have been optimized using ab initio RHF/6-31G methods. After optimization, B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) single point calculations of the final structures are done to include the effect of electron correlation and the basis set with diffuse function and polarization function. Relative stability of tetraethyl ester (1) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene is in following order: cone (most stable) > partial cone > 1,3- alternate > 1,2-alternate isomer. Relative stability of triethyl ester (2) of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene is in following order: cone (most stable) > 2-partial cone > 1-partial cone > 3-partial cone ~ 1,3-alternate ~ 1,2- alternate isomer.

  • The cone and seed production of pitch pine were investigated at two areas(songtan and yangdong) located in kyounggi province. Bymeans of formulas derived from both the regression analysis between the number of seeds and cone length, and between d2·h and number of cones, cone and seed production were estimated. The correlation coefficient value between the number of seeds and cone length was high(r=0.6134). The cone and seed production of pitch pine has a high relationship to the variables-dbh, tree aga , and height of tree. The cone production of pitchpine forest estimated by the formula log(o+s+y+c)=0.581 log(d2·h)-1.317 was 965,832/ha in 1985∼1986, 850,852/ha in 1986∼1987 at songtan, and 462,794/ha in 1985∼1986,916,965/ha in 1986∼1987 at yangdong.

  • Uncertainty study of shear strength characteristics of the marine clays was carried out based ell In-situ tests and laboratory tests on tile south-east coastal region of the Korean peninsula. Theoretical analyses were studied using both tile spherical cavity expansion theory in finite soil mass and the strain path method to determine tile cone factor using the undrained shear strengths obtained by in-situ tests, and the empirical methods in accordance with the ultimate resistance theory were also discussed. Analysis show that the empirical methods suggest more reasonable value than that of theoretical methods in terms of comparing the cone factor estimated using linear regression and frequency distribution analyses. The cone factors obtained by the empirical methods are 18, 15, and 6 respectively, from the results of total cone resistance, effective cone resistance, and excess porewater cone resistance method, and the estimated were similar to those of previous researcher's.

  • An investigation of the dimensionless torque in the newly developed cone drum twister texturing mechanism is reported. The cone drum twister is one of the outer surface contacting friction-twisting devices in false-twist texturing. In this cone drum twister, a filament yam passes over the surface of the cone drum that rotates by the passing yarn without a special driving device. This research is composed of the theoretical analysis of the false twisting mechanism and the experimental analysis at room temperature. The equations have been derived which shows interrelationship of the conical angle of cone drum, the wrapping angle, the drag angle, and the yam helix angle. Theoretical values of dimensionless torque were calculated and were compared with the experimental results. It is shown that, as the conical angle and the projected wrapping angle increased, the dimensionless torque also increased. But the conical angle was reached to ${30.75}^{\circ}C$, the dimensionless torque decreased.
