  • Geophysical well logging techniques which are useful for delineating permeability of geological formation have been reviewed. A new technique for obtaining permeability using conductivity log technique has been discussed. This conductivity logging technique has been tested by monitoring the conductivity change within the model hole using borehole environment water and incoming-outgoing water of different salinity with constant flow rate by maintaining balance between inflow and outflow. Conductivity variation features depended mainly on flow rate, density contrasts due to salinity and temperature contrasts between fluid within the hole and incoming-outgoing fluid. The results of the experiment show uniform change of fluid conductivity within bore hole with time, and a fairly good correlation between the flow rate and the conductivity change rate. This conductivity logging technique is expected to be an efficient tool for determining permeability.

  • A novel conductivity technique was developed to detect penetration depth of the vessel fluid into the feedpipe. For a given reactor geometry, critical agitator speeds were experimentally determined at the onset of feedpipe backmixing using Rushton 6 bladed disk turbine (6BD) and high efficiency axial flow type 3 bladed (HE-3) impellers. The ratio of the feedpipe velocity to the critical agitator speed ($v_f/v_t$) was constant for either laminar or turbulent feedpipe flow regimes. Compared to the results of fast competitive reaction, feedpipe backmixing had to penetrate at least one feedpipe diameter into the feedpipe to significantly influence the yield of the side product. However, higher $v_f/v_t$ than that for L/d = 0 (position at the feedpipe end) of the conductivity technique is recommended to completely eliminate feedpipe backmixing in conservative design criteria. The conductivity technique was successful in all feedpipe flow conditions of laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes.

  • The measurement method of electrical conductivity of the metal use a generally DC technique. Traceability to national standards in many countries is achieved using DC measurement technique and recently it's interested in AC technique. As a results for AC technique, the properties of electrical conductivity of non-ferrous and ferrous metals is decreasing at low frequency level.

  • An unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function and a soil-water characteristic curve are the essential constitutive factors in studying unsaturated soils. In order to obtain the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function, prediction functions, which are based on the soil-water characteristic curve, have been used because it is difficult to measure the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function directly. In this study, a parameter estimation method using the flow pump technique is introduced to determine the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function. This method provides more accurate and independent solution than previous methods for the determination of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function which is not subordinate to the soil-water characteristic curve or prediction models.

  • The van der Pauw technique is one of the popular methods for determining the conductivity of flat metal samples. Traceability of the national standard for the conductivity has been achieved by direct current measurement techniques in national measurement institutes of many countries. But recently, alternative current measurement techniques for determining the conductivity of flat metal samples is also interested. In this study, we measured the conductivity of non-ferrous and ferrous flat metals at alternative current using van der Pauw technique. As measurement results, the conductivities of the samples were decreased according to increasing the test frequency even though the decreasing ratio was different.

  • In the present study, the thermal conductivity of a silicon nitride($Si_3N_4$) thin-film is evaluated using the dual-wavelength pump-probe technique. A 100-nm thick $Si_3N_4$ film is deposited on a silicon (100) wafer using the radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique and film structural characteristics are observed using the X-ray reflectivity technique. The film's thermal conductivity is measured using a pump-probe setup powered by a femtosecond laser system of which pump-beam wavelength is frequency-doubled using a beta barium borate crystal. A multilayer transient heat conduction equation is numerically solved to quantify the film property. A finite difference method based on the Crank-Nicolson scheme is employed for the computation so that the experimental data can be curve-fitted. Results show that the thermal conductivity value of the film is lower than that of its bulk status by an order of magnitude. This investigation offers an effective way to evaluate thermophysical properties of nanoscale ceramic and dielectric materials with high temporal and spatial resolutions.

  • This study presents a conductivity measurement technique that is applicable at radio frequencies (RF). Of particular interest is the measurement of the RF conductivity of a flexible Zell fabric, which is often used to implement wearable antennas on clothes. First, the transmission coefficient is measured using a planar microstrip ring resonator, where the ring is made of a Zell fabric. Then, the fabric's conductivity is determined by comparing the measured transmission coefficient to a set of simulation data. Specifically, a MATLAB-based root-searching algorithm is used to find the minimum of an error function composed of measured and simulation data. Several error functions have been tested, and the results showed that an error function employing only the magnitude of the transmission coefficient was the best for determining the conductivity. The effectiveness of this technique is verified by the measurement of a known copper foil before characterizing the Zell fabric. The conductivity of the Zell fabric at 2 GHz appears to be within the order of $10^4S/m$, which is lower than the DC conductivity of $5{\times}10^5S/m$.

  • Flow pump technique was used in order to determine the soil-water characteristic curve of weathered granite soils in Pocheon area. This technique enables measurement to be more convenient and accurate as it is based on the CU condition of triaxial compression test. Besides, it is also able to measure dry and moisture curves continuously since the test is controled by means of a computer automatically. In this study, not only a hydraulic conductivity of weathered granite soils at fully saturated state in Pocheon area, but also a soil-water characteristic curve throughout unsaturate flow tests were determined. In addition, Brooks and Corey's model and Genuchten's model were used to simulate the soil-water characteristic curve. On the basis of the simulation an unsaturate hydraulic conductivity was predicted.

  • In this paper, in-situ technique for measuring hydraulic conductivity of Excavation Disturbed Zone (EDZ) in a direct way and its application to an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) site were introduced. It was understood that both the EDZ oriented test equipment as a hardware and analysis/evaluation technique as a software should be integrated for upgrading a quality of estimated EDZ hydraulic conductivity. The well-estimated EDZ hydraulic conductivity is expected to enhance a reliability of stability evaluation for caverns under groundwater table and design of a waterproof or drainage system as well as a grout system.

  • In this study, applicability of electrical conductivity monitoring technique for containment barrier such as soil-bentonite wall was evaluated. Laboratory tests including permeability tests and column tests were performed to understand variations in electrical conductivity at different bentonite contents, hydraulic conductivities, and heavy metal concentrations. The electrical conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite mixtures was found to increase proportionally with bentonite content. Accordingly, the hydraulic conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite mixtures which decreases linearly with increasing bentonite content was found to have an inversely proportional relationship with the electrical conductivity. In column tests, electrical conductivity breakthrough curves and concentration breakthrough curves were simultaneously obtained. These results indicated that electrical conductivity measurement can be an effective means of detecting heavy metal transport at the desired locations within barriers and verifying possible contaminant leakage. Experimental results obtained from this study showed that the electrical conductivity measurement can be a promising tool for monitoring of containment barrier.
