  • Typically, condensate forms as droplets on the fin surfaces and may bridge the space between the fin surfaces. This is due to the dry characteristics inherent to the fin surface. The droplets increase the air-side pressure drop. In the case of high air velocities, these droplets may be blown off the fins and entrained in the air stream. To minimize the formation of condensate droplet, the wet ability of the fins must be improved. The carry-over velocity is affected by fin surface characteristics. To avoid carry-over in the air conditioner having the highest air velocity of 1.5 m/sec, the dynamic contact angle (DCA) should be at least lowly under $60^{\circ}$.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on toxification/detoxification metabolic pathway in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. We measured the activities of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP450s) and UDP-glucuronyltransferase, sulfotransferase and glutathione-S-transferase in CSC-treated rat hepatocytes. CSC significantly increased the activities of hepatic CYP4501A1 and CYP4501A2 to 7.5 fold and 1.6 fold respectively, compared with control level. However, CSC did not affect the activities of conjugation enzymes. We a1so examined if treatment of CSC could change thc cytotoxicity of acetaminophen (AA) through modulation of metabolizing enzymes. In rat hepatocytes, pretreatment with CSC potentiated the cytotoxicity of AA. This result indicates that potentiation of AA toxicity by CSC pretreatment may be related to induction of CYP4501A1 and CYP4501A2.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study heat transfer characteristics of rotating heat pipe with tapered condensers by numerical analysis and experimental method. An experimental investigation has been carried out on thermal resistance between condenser wall and vapor region fo the rotating heat pipe with various taper 0, 1/11.4, 1/38. Heat transfer characteristics by analytical study were applied to describe various Nu numbers on the base of dimensionless condensate film, Re and Pr numbers in both condensers. Comparison between calculated results and experimental data showed qualitatively good agreement and the numerical analysis of this study can be utilized to predict the performance of a rotating heat pipe. The thermal resistance can be decreased by increasing the revolution per minute. Regardless of various dimensionless condensate film, Nu number was largely influenced by saturation temperatures of working fluid.

  • The heat transfer process from steam to web through the cylinder drum consists of the thermal resistance by condensate thickness. thickness of shell, and the contact resistance between cylinder and web. The most thermal resistance in conventional cylinder drum dryer is generated by condensate, which is increased by the increase on revolution per minute(RPM). Therefore, the increase of RPM for the production enhancement results in the more thermal resistance, and eventually RPM is restricted. In this study, the theoretical analysis on the characteristics of heat transfer in cylinder drum for paper dryer was performed in the stationary state of steam in drum. The overall heat transfer coefficient, steam quantity and heat transfer quantity were predicted by diameter and length of drum, condensate thickness, revolution per minute and steam temperature for experimental apparatus design.

  • It is usual to use hydrophilic-coated aluminum foil for evaporator fin of air-conditioners to reduce air flow resistance caused by the water droplets condensed on the fin surface. The major effect of a hydrophilic coating is to reduce the contact angle of the condensate and prevent bridging of the condensate between the adjacent fins. The performance of hydrophilic coating generally tends to be degraded as it is used since the coating material is washed down by the condensate. In the present work, several types of hydrophilic coatings were evaluated in terms of durability of hydrophilicity, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Results showed that an improved hydrophilic coating of resin type presented superb qualify in terms of durability and corrosion resistance while having almost the same level of qualify in heat resistance compared with the others.

  • A simple analysis has been made of the condensation of vapor onto rivulets of condensate which are formed by non-wetting narrow Taflon strips circumferencially located in a certain interval on horizontal tubes. Heat transfer to the rivulets increased over $50\%$ above that to the Nusselt uniform thickness film. Results are directly applicable to condenser tubes in large steam condensers.

  • An air-cooled condenser is a device that is used for converting steam into condensate by using ambient air. The air-cooled condenser is prone to suffer from a serious explosion when the condensate inside the tubes of a heat exchanger is frozen; in particular, tubes can break during winter. This is primarily due to the structural problem of the tube outlet of an existing conventional air-cooled condenser system, which causes the backflow of residual steam and noncondensable gases. To solve the backflow problem in such condensers, such a system was simulated and a new system was designed and evaluated in this study. The experimental results using the simulated condenser showed the occurrence of freezing because of the backflow inside the tube. On the other hand, no backflow and freezing occurred in the advanced new condenser, and efficient heat exchange occurred.

  • Although tobacco smoke has been known to have genotoxicity as well as cytotoxicity, the sensitivity of the cell lines used against cigarette smoke is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the genotoxicity of several cell lines, which are routinely used in the in vitro assays, with cigarette smoke condensate(CSC) of Kentucky Reference Cigarette 1R4F. In the micronucleus(MN) induction assays, murine(CHO-K1, V79, BALB/c 3T3) cell lines and human(MCF-7, A549) ones were used. As a result, the CSC exhibited cytotoxicity with a concentration-dependent response in all cell lines. EC$_{50}$ of CSC in CHO-K1, V79, BALB/c 3T3, MCF-7 and A549 were 140, 125, 100, 116 and 109 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL, respectively. On the other hand, the spontaneous micronucleated cell(MNC) frequency was stable and reproducible in every cell lines tested in this study. The dose-response of various cell lines to the induction of MN by CSC was estimated using linear regression analysis. CSC(0~100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) caused a dose-dependent MN induction in CHO-K1, V79, BALB/c 3T3 and MCF-7 cell lines. Putting together all the data obtained and linear regression analysis of the data, we concluded that V79 cells are more susceptible to the accurate assessment of CSC-induced MN than the others.s.

  • Under severe accidents, the pressure and temperature response has an important role for the integrity of a nuclear power plant containment. The history of the pressure and temperature is characterized by the amount and state of steam/air mixture in a containment. Recently, the heat transfer rate to the structure surface is supposed to be increased by the wavy interface formed on condensate film. However, in the calculation by using CONTAIN code, the condensation heat transfer on a containment wall is calculated by assuming the smooth interface and has a tendency to be underestimated for safety. In order to obtain the best- estimate heat transfer calculation, we investigated the condensation heat transfer model in CONTAIN 1.2 code and adopted the new forced convection correlation which is considering wavy interface. By using the film tracking model in CONTAIN 1.2 code, the condensate film is treated to consider the effect of wavy interface. And also, it was carried out to investigate the effect of the different cell modelings - 5-cell and 10-cell modeling - for KNGR(Korean Next Generation Reactor) containment phenomena during a severe accident. The effect of wavy interface on condensate film appears to cause the decrease of peak temperature and pressure response . In order to obtain more adequate results, the proper cell modeling was required to consider the proper flow of steam/air mixture.
