Early investigations focused mainly on manipulating the confinement effect to develop a reinforced concrete column with lateral hoops. Based on this legacy model, Li's model incorporated the additional confinement effect of a steel jacket. However, recent experiments on plain concrete cylinders with steel jackets revealed relatively large discrepancies in the estimates of strength enhancement and the post-peak behavior. Here, we describe a modified constitutive law for confined concrete with an unbonded external steel jacket in terms of three regions for the loading stage. We used a two-phase heterogeneous concrete model to simulate the uniaxial compression test of a $150mm{\times}300mm$ concrete cylinder with three thicknesses of steel jackets: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm. The proposed constitutive model was verified by a series of finite element analyses using a finite element program. The damaged plasticity model and extended Drucker-Prager model were applied and compared in terms of the level of pressure sensitivity for confinement in 3D. The proposed model yielded results that were in close agreement with the experimental results.

In lately, it's been developed and used a system of using deck plates as formwork in order to solve various problems caused by conventional formwork system. This system is more economical and has higher constructability than the conventional system by permanently embedding most of deck plates into the members. However, for this kind of embedded deck plates formwork system, it's been reported that it is difficult to verify filling of concrete in members like beams with narrow width and complicated rebar arrangement. In addtion, there are several problems such as corrosion of deck plates in terms of constructability and maintenance. Therefore, in this study, it is attempted to develop a removal-deck plate formwork system for beams by removing deck plates after concrete curing. The system consists of a deck plate module that acts as form, a frame preventing deformation by concrete lateral pressure, stirrup frame, and connector that combines these. As a result of this research, it is verified that it has higher constructability, efficiently prevents deformation caused by concrete lateral pressure and could be easily removed in the developed formwork system.
Prediction of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridge (IAB) load effect requires understanding of the inherent uncertainties as it relates to thermal loading, time-dependent effects, bridge material properties and soil properties. In addition, complex inelastic and hysteretic behavior must be considered over an extended, 75-year bridge life. The present study establishes IAB displacement and internal force statistics based on available material property and soil property statistical models and Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical models within the simulation were developed to evaluate the 75-year bridge displacements and internal forces based on 2D numerical models that were calibrated against four field monitored IABs. The considered input uncertainties include both resistance and load variables. Material variables are: (1) concrete elastic modulus; (2) backfill stiffness; and (3) lateral pile soil stiffness. Thermal, time dependent, and soil loading variables are: (1) superstructure temperature fluctuation; (2) superstructure concrete thermal expansion coefficient; (3) superstructure temperature gradient; (4) concrete creep and shrinkage; (5) bridge construction timeline; and (6) backfill pressure on backwall and abutment. IAB displacement and internal force statistics were established for: (1) bridge axial force; (2) bridge bending moment; (3) pile lateral force; (4) pile moment; (5) pile head/abutment displacement; (6) compressive stress at the top fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span; and (7) tensile stress at the bottom fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span. These established IAB displacement and internal force statistics provide a basis for future reliability-based design criteria development.
The use of local two-sided and three-sided jacketing for the repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete beam-column joints damaged by severe earthquakes is investigated experimentally and analytically. Two exterior beam-column joint specimens ($O_1$ and $O_2$) were submitted to a series of cyclic lateral loads to simulate severe earthquake damage. The specimens were typical of existing older structures built in the 1960s and 1970s. The specimens were then repaired and strengthened by local two-sided or three-sided jacketing according to UNIDO Manual guidelines. The strengthened specimens ($RO_1$ and $RO_2$) were then subjected to the same displacement history as that imposed on the original specimens. The repaired and strengthened specimens exhibited significantly higher strength, stiffness and better energy dissipation capacity than the original specimens.
Current methods for lateral thrust calculations are based on the classical formulations of Rankine or Coulomb. However, the previous studies indicate that lateral earth pressures acting on the wall stem, which is the function of deformation parameters of the backfill, are close to the active condition only in the top half of the wall stem and in the lower half of the wall stem, the lateral earth pressures are significantly in excess of the active pressures. This paper presents the compressible inclusion function of EPS which can results in reduction of static earth pressure by accomodating the movement of retained soil. A series of model tests were conducted to evaluate the reduction of static earth pressure using EPS inclusion and determine the optimum stiffness of EPS. Also, field test was conducted to evaluate the reduction of static earth pressure using EPS inclusion. Based on field test it is found that the magnitude of static earth pressure can be reduced about 20% compared with classical active earth pressure.
Concrete-filled tubes (CFT), formed by an outer steel tube filled with plain or reinforced concrete inside, have been increasingly used these recent decades as columns or beam-columns, especially for tall buildings in seismic areas due to their excellent structural response. This improved behavior is derived from the effect of confinement provided by the tube, since the compressive strength of concrete increases when being subjected to hydrostatic pressure. In circular CFTs under compression, the whole tube is uniformly tensioned due to the radial expansion of concrete. Contrarily, in rectangular and square-shaped CFTs, the lateral flanges become subjected to in-plane bending derived from this volumetric expansion, and this fact implies a reduction of the confinement effect of the core. This study presents a numerical analysis of different configurations of CFT stub columns with inner stiffening plates, limited to the study of the influence of these plates on the compressive behavior without eccentricity. The final purpose is to evaluate the efficiency in terms of strength and ductility of introducing stiffeners into circular and square CFT sections under large deformation axial loading.

On the basis of the philosophy that "the compressive axial load capacity after spalling of shell concrete should be maintained as that before spalling" by applying the confinement model of high strength concrete proposed in the previous proceeding paper and equivalent lateral confining pressure considering configurations of transverse reinforcement, the amounts of transverse reinforcement from the compressive capacity design method about high strength reinforced concrete tied columns can be calculated through the formula proposed in this paper. The proposed design equation of transverse steel amounts for high strength reinforced concrete tied columns was quite agreeable with the test results of HSC tied columns conducted by other researchers as well as author.as author.
Lateral pressure plays a significant role in the stress-strain relationship of compressed concrete. Concrete's internal cracking resistance, ultimate strain, and axial strength are improved by confinement. This phenomenon influences the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete columns. Utilizing behavior factors to predict the nonlinear seismic responses of structures is prevalent in seismic codes, and this factor plays a vital role in the seismic responses of structures. This study aims to evaluate the confining action on the behavior factor of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames (RCMRFs) with shear walls (SWRCMRFs). To this end, a diverse range of mid-rise SW-RCMRFs was initially designed based on the Iranian national building code criteria. Second, the stress-strain curve of each element was modeled twice, both with and without the confinement phenomenon. Each frame was then subjected to pushover analysis. Finally, the analytical behavior factors of these frames were computed and compared to the Iranian seismic code behavior factor. The results demonstrate that confining action increased the behavior factors of SW-RCMRFs by 7-12%.

The purpose of this study is to develop an analytic model which can describe the behavior or concrete compressive member strengthened by CFS(Carbon Fiber Sheet) with various cross-sectional shapes such as circular. square, and octagonal and various laminate angles. The failure criterion of laminated CFS is based on Tsai-Wu failure criterion. The stress strain model of confined concrete compressive member is based on an equation proposed by Mander. The effective lateral confining pressure is considered and modified according to various cross-sectional shapes. Octagonal cross-section shows the best results in the aspect of ductility, while circular does in compressive strengthening effects. In addition, [0/0/0/0] laminate in which the direction of fiber is parallel to the direction of principal stress shows the superior strength and ductility than other laminates. The analytic results show that strength and ductility of the analytic model depend on the cross-sectional shapes as well as the laminate angles.
Many electric poles in the softground have been collapsed due to external load. In this study, 10 types of tests were performed with variation of location, numbers and depths of anchor blocks as well as depth of poles to find horizontal earth pressure through full scale pull-out tests. The horizontal earth pressure increased with embedded depth of electric pole, and earth pressure of lower passive zone decreased. The deeper of anchor block, earth pressure of passive zone becomes less. lateral displacements showed differences depending on location, numbers and depth of poles. The bending is generated in the upper part at the initial load, but it moved to central part as load increased. The maximum horizontal displacement decreased to 1/1.6 at -0.5m depth of anchor block and 1.3m additional laying depth of poles into ground.
