  • The purpose of this study is to find inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete bridge columns under earthquake. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, due to the abrupt change in their stiffness local discontinuous deformation can be taken into account by introducing interface element. Also an analytical model is developed to express the confining effects of lateral tie which depend on the existence or nonexistence and the amounts of transverse confinement, etc. The proposed numerical method for inelastic behavior and ductility capacity of reinforced concrete bridge columns will be verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • In this study, the problem of strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) columns by a central steel section with minimum amount is taken up. For this purpose, RC columns with central reinforcing elements such as a steel bar, a steel H section and a steel pipe were taken up. To certify the effect of this way of reinforcing, experimental study using specimens of RC columns of shear span ratio of 2.5 was carried out. The variables which are considered to affect the behavior of RC columns subjected to axial load and cyclic shear load are the magnitude of axial load, tie ratio and main bar ratio. As the results of this study, the effect of a central reinforcing element for making higher the earthquake resistant properties of RC columns were observed.

  • The purpose of this paper, having chosen the connection method, filled by High-strength mortar, in conncetion of PC member, is to study the mechanical behaviour and practical usage of the method. The paper estimates the connection ability of Reinforced-bar, that is, Sleeve considering the effect of Reinforced-bar's dimeter. Sleeve's length and diameter in the structural behaviour of mortar-filled connection, therefore the behaviour of Splice-Sleeve exists in concrete practically. This paper discusses the effect of the concrete in Splice-Sleeve. Also, to estimate structural behaviour in a practical wall panel, the upper and bottom wall panels are produced and the behaviour of Splice-Sleeve is discussed. And then Vertical Tie Bar being designed by using Precast method, this paper presents the various application and the practicable method using Splice-Sleeve.

  • Recently, the development of the paved track is required as a Low-maintenance of conventional line. The main reason is that the line capacity and bearing of track are increased progressively. The most important factor of paved track is stability and applicability. To be based on this subject, Cement Mortar Pouring(CMP) paved track is developed. CMP paved track is a kind of ballast reinforced track using the pre packed concrete technique. The most important to design is characteristics of the structure. CMP slab's thickness is less than the conventional slab track and pouring layer is attached tie and roadbed directly. On this paper, to verify the basic structure of the CMP track, characteristics of the structure is investigated pouring layer, tie and interaction of the each layer using the 3D finite elment analysis.

  • The function of diaphragms at abutments and piers of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder train bridge is to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or column and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in-plane deformation. Due to large stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than designs for other structual members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from behavior of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis far the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling. Then, strut-and-tie model is applied to design the diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge. The modeling techniques in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.

  • Several countries including Korea, Japan and European countries have reached the stage of planning, constructing their high-speed railway systems. High-speed train will become a key tool for intercity passenger transportation. Before that, safety of high-speed train must be secured. It is connected directly with track. The track is composed of ballast, tie, fastening and rail. Also, the fastening system makes tie and rail connect. In this case of the railway bridges used concrete slab track, the deflection of the bridge cause uplife of the rail at the areas between segments. In the structural analysis about it, stiffness of the fastening systems has been assumed. Therefore, use of the stiffness according to an experimental study needs. In this study, the stiffness values of various types of fastening systems are determined by the experiment and the structural behavior of fastening system is analyzed.

  • The strut-and-tie method (STM) has been widely accepted and used as a rational approach for the design of disturbed regions ('D' regions) of reinforced concrete members such as in corbels and deep beams, where traditional flexure theory does not apply. This paper evaluates the applicability of the equilibrium based STM in strength predictions of deep beams (with rectangular and circular cross-section) and corbels using the available experiments in literature. STM is found to give fairly good results for corbel and deep beams. The failure modes of these deep members are also studied, and an optimum amount of distribution reinforcement is suggested to eliminate the premature diagonal splitting failure. A comparison with existing empirical and semi empirical methods also show that STM gives more reliable results. The nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) of 50 deep beams and 20 corbels could capture the complete behaviour of deep members including crack pattern, failure load and failure load accurately.

  • In this study, 24 high-strength concrete dapped-end beams were tested to study the effects of the amount of main dapped-end reinforcement, the nominal shear span-to-depth ratio, and the concrete strength on the shear strength of dapped-end beams. Test results indicate that the shear strength of dapped ends increases with the increase in the amount of main dapped-end reinforcement and the concrete strength. The shear strength of dapped-end beam increases with the decrease of nominal shear span-to-depth ratio. A simplified method for determining the shear strength of reinforced concrete dapped ends is also proposed in this paper. The shear strengths predicted by the proposed method and the approach of PCI Design Handbook are compared with test results. The comparison shows that the proposed method can more accurately predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete dapped-end beams than the approach of PCI Design Handbook.

  • Structural walls have been mostly used for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic areas because they play a role as an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. The lateral resistance system for the earthquake load should be designed to have enough ductility and stable hysteretic response in the critical regions where plastic deformation occurred beyond yielding. The behavior of the reinforced concrete element to experience large deformation in the critical areas by a major earthquake is affected by the performance of the confined core concrete. Thus, the confinement of concrete by suitable arrangements of transverse reinforcement results in a significant increase in both the strength and ductility of compressed concrete. This paper reports the experimental results of reinforced concrete structural walls for wall-type apartment structure under axial loads and cyclic reversal of lateral loads with different confinement of the boundary elements. The results show that confinement of the boundary element by open 'U'-bar and cross tie is effective. The shear strength capacity is not increased by the confinement but deformation capacity is improve.

  • Since clear span-to-depth ratio is used to define what is so called a deep beam, it is an important parameter ratio for study about deep beam. Deep beams can be designed by flexure design method, and shear provided by concrete ($v_c$) and by steel ($v_s$) for deep flexure members are provided in ACI 318-99 [1]. But in later version of ACI (from ACI 318-02) it is not provided and deep beams shall be designed either by taking into account nonlinear distribution of strain or by Appendix A of Strut-and-Tie Models (STM). The trend of deep beam design seems to be familiar with strut-and-tie model, but ACI traditional design is not forgotten. By comparing these two method, there should a point which definitely explain the different between the two methods. In this study, 68 samples result of steel, after reinforcement arrangement, are taken to be analyzed.
