  • This study is part of an ongoing research project on the development of a sound-absorbing lightweight foamed concrete manufactured by a hydro-thermal reaction between silica and calcium. As the silica source, pulverized bottom ash was used, and as several cementitious powders of ordinary portland cement, alumina cement and calcium hydroxide were used. Manufacture of foamed concrete was accomplished using the pre-foaming method to make a continuous pore system, which is the method of making the foam by using a foaming agent, then making the slurry by mixing the foam, water, and powders. The experiment factors are W/B, foam agent dilution ratio, and foam ratio, and test items are compressive strength, dry density, void ratio, and absorption rate, as evaluated by NRC. The experiment results showed that the sound absorption of lightweight foamed concrete satisfied NRC requirements for the absorbing materials in most of the experiments. It is thus concluded that foam ratio was the most dominant factor, and significantly affected all properties of lightweight foamed concrete in this study. W/B rarely affected total void ratio and continuous void ratio as well as compressive strength, and dry density and foam agent dilution ratio also had little effect onalmost all properties. The analysis of the correlation between NRC, absorption time, continuous void ratio, and absorption time showed that the interrelationship of the continuous void ratio was high.

  • It is important to increase the strength of binders in order to enhance the strength of concrete. However, when the mineral admixture used for high strength concrete is incorporated individually, its dispersibility decreases due to the phenomenon of compaction, which reduces its fluidity and results in insufficient strength being created. To solve this problem, we can pre-mix each binder in advance to disperse a mineral admixture among binders, which will strengthen the fluidity and strength of concrete. Therefore, this study analyzed the properties of high strength concrete depending on the mix method used, to determine the effect of pre-mix cements ranging from W/B 15 to 35%. It was found that the fluidity of pre-mix increased to a level higher than that of individual mix due to its dispersion and ball bearing effect. The air content was slightly decreased from the result of individual mix due to the micro filler effect, which causes fine particles of silica-fume to fill the voids among cement particles, while the setting time of pre-mix was shorter than that of individual mix, because enhanced dispersion of pre-mix affects hydration heat time. The compressive strength of pre-mix increased due to the phenomenon of compaction of gap structure, and the variation of coefficient decreased by 1.69% on average in strength variation.

  • Artificial lightweight aggregates and solids were manufactured with coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash). In order to apply alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate to concrete, several experimental studies were performed. Thus, it can be noticed the optimal mix proportion, basic characteristies, mechanical properties and environmental safety of alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid and alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate. Also, the freezing-thawing test property of concrete using the alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate was investigated. As a result, the optimal mixing proportion of coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid to make alkali-activated artificial lightweight aggregates was cement $10\%$, water glass $15\%$, NaOH $10\%$, $MnO_2\;5\%$. Alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) solid can achieve compressive strength of 36.4 MPa, at 7-days, after the paste was cured at air curing after moist curing during 24 hours in $50^{\circ}C$. Alkali-activated coal ash(fly ash, bottom ash) artificial lightweight aggregate that do impregnation to polymer was improved $10\%$ crushing strength $150\%$, and was available to concrete.

  • The present study tested 5 concrete mixes to develop reliable mixing proportions for the sustainable alkali-activated(AA) foamed concrete as a thermal insulation material for the floor heating system of buildings. The AA binder used was composed of 73.5% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, 15% fly ash, 5% calcium hydroxide, and 6.5% sodium silicate. As a main variable, the unit binder content varied from $325kg/m^3$ to $425kg/m^3$ at a space of $25kg/m^3$. The test results revealed that AA foamed concrete has considerable potential for practical applications when the unit binder content is close to $375kg/m^3$, which achieves the minimum quality requirements specified in KS F 4039 and ensures economic efficiency. In addition, lifecycle assessment demonstrated the reduction in the environmental impact profiles of all specimens relative to typical ordinary portland cement foamed concrete as follows: 99% for photochemical oxidation potential, 87~89% for global warming potential, 78~82% for abiotic depletion, and 70~75% for both acidification potential and human toxicity.

  • In a will to subdue the brittleness as well as the low tensile and flexural strengths of ordinary concrete, researches are being actively watched worldwide on steel fiber-reinforced Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) obtained by admixing steel fibers in ultra high strength concrete. For the purpose of maximizing advantage of UHPC, this study removes the upper flange of the steel girder to apply an inverted T-shape girder for the formation of the composite beam. This paper intends to evaluate the behavior of the shear connectors and the flexural characteristics of the composite beam made of the inverted T-shape girder and UHPC slab using 16 specimens considering the compressive strength of concrete, the mixing ratio of steel fiber, the spacing of shear connectors and the thickness of the slab as variables. In view of the test results, it seemed that the appropriate stud spacing should range between 100 mm and 2 or 4 times the thickness of the slab. Moreover, the relative displacement observed in the specimens showed that ductile behavior was secured to a certain extent with reference to the criteria for ductile behavior suggested in Eurocode-4. The specimens with large stud spacing exhibited larger values than given by the design formula and revealed that the shear connectors developed larger ultimate strength than predicted owing to the action of UHPC and steel after non-composite behavior. Besides, the specimens with narrow stud spacing failed suddenly through compression at the upper chord of UHPC before reaching the full capacity of the shear connectors.

  • This study investigated the effect of surface water on concrete substrate on adhesive strength in tension of very high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar. The specimens were prepared with proportionally mixing SBR latex, ordinary portland cement, silica sand, superplasticizer and viscosity enhancing agent. Polymer cement ratio (P/C) were 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75% and the weight ratio of fine aggregate to cement were 1:1 and 1:3. The specimens obtained with different P/C and C:F were characterized by unit weight, flow test, crack resistance and adhesion test. After basic tests, two mixtures of P/C=20% and 30% in case of C:F=1:1, and one mixture of P/C=50% in case of C:F=1:3 were selected, respectively. These three selected specimens were studied about the effect of surface water evenly sprayed on concrete substrate by a amount of 0, 0.006, 0.012, 0.017, 0.024g per unit area ($cm^2$) of concrete substrate surface The results show that surface water on concrete substrate increases the adhesive strength in tension of high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar and improve the flowability compared to the non-sprayed case.

  • This study is performed to analyze the effects of CASB by applying the superplasticizer combined CASB on the ultra high strength mortar and concrete that uses different mineral admixture depending on whether the silica fume was used and the results are summarized below. From the characteristics of Fresh mortar and concrete, the fluidity was lower in B2-CASB than B2-PC from the mixing of CASB and based on the viscosity of the mortar and concrete in the binary proportion but in the ternary proportion, B3-CASB showed a larger fluidity than B3-PC because of a reduction in the restriction level due to the effects of an improvement of particle size distribution. The compression strength was higher in ternary proportion than in binary proportion and higher in CASB than in PC from the characteristics of hardening mortar and concrete and this is analyzed as a result of increased minuteness from the calcium silicate hydrates produced from the pozzolan reaction of a mineral admixture, SF, and also the charging effects of capillary pore of CASB. Overall, when using the nanomaterial, CASB in combination with a superplasticizer, the fluidity and the strength aspects of the ternary proportion of ultra high strength mortar and concrete with silica fume may be improved to a higher quality.

  • This study was achieved experiment to evaluate effect on fluidity and strength development ratio by slag replacement ratio to $40{\sim}100MPa$ HSC(High Strength Concrete) containing blast furnace slag(GGBS) and fly-ash(FA). Also it was suggested that most suitable replacement ratio of GGBS is effect by strength. The mix plan of concrete used in an experiment was used to the GGBS replacement ratio of 0, 12, 25% as the cement materials, and fly ash was used equally by replacement ratio 15%. According to test results, for use GGBS with fly ash as binder, slump of GGBS replacement ratio 25% is the most superior in 40MPa series, and appeared by thing which slump flow of GGBS 12% is the most superior in 60, 80MPa's series. The other side, was expressed that fluidity is excellent by FA replacement ratio 15% in 100MPa series. In the case of compressive strength 40MPa, it was exposed that the strength revelation is effect in until the GGBS principal parts ratio increases by replacement ratio 25%. Also, it was exposed that GGBS mixing ratio more than replacement ratio 25% is not since fitness in high strength concrete more than 100MPa.
