The Concept of Postmodernism

  • This study explores the concept of postmodernism in literature. There are many ideas which have conflicted with each other, but now postmodernism is real concept. We cannot deny. By researching papers of Jean-François Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthes, Ihab Hassan etc. we find out many characteristics of postmodernism. From that, we propose a conceptual understanding of postmodern literature as follows: Starting from the late 1910s with the poetry of Dadaism (1916), Franz Kafka's prose (Metamorphosis 1915) and drama by Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot 1953), postmodern literature coexists with modern literature and is a thriving form from 1960 on. Postmodernism is opposed to modernism in nature in that it accepts nothingness, chaos, games and intertextuality. It tries to solve some difficult problems of modernism making use of science to free people from a life of darkness and dogma. Postmodernism is associated with the information technology revolution, an economic, scientific and technological boom and rapid urbanization.

Construction and Validation of a Cognitive Presence Scale for Measuring Online Learners' Engagement

  • Cognitive presence, a sense of "being there" cognitively, has recently been considered as an important indicator for students' engagement in e-learning. There is, however, no widely accepted scale to measure the level of cognitive presence since most studies have put their effort to set and clarify the conceptual framework with qualitative methodology. This study reviewed existing theories on cognitive presence and related fields extensively and developed a new self-report scale for measuring the conceived level of cognitive presence. The reliability and validity of the scale was tested against 723 undergraduate students in two consecutive studies, 418 in the preliminary and 305 in the follow-up study. Three major constructs to measure the perceived level of cognitive presence were: 1) clear understanding, 2) knowledge construction, and 3) learning management. This paper reports the final results of the two independent studies.

Human Visual Intelligence and the New Territory of Educational Technology Research

  • The general aim of this article is to explicate what can be researched in our field based on the new understanding on the ability of human visual intelligence. To follow this aim, three key discussions were followed. The first is to explain why the human visual intelligence research is so important in our field and how it was neglected. The basic orientations of the research questions used in its framing and in answering are reviewed. After reviewing traditional research orientations, as the second discussion, alternative, more useful perspective for thinking about human visual intelligence is suggested. And the possibility of contribution for the future research in general is discussed. In doing so, human visual intelligence was defined in rather practically oriented ways rather than theoretically oriented ones. More practical perspectives were suggested. The third discussion is to show how to use the alternative perspectives of human visual intelligence in the areas of educational technology research. It was hoped that the article lays out conceptual groundwork for generation of educational technology research frameworks which can be used for the research conduct, reproduction and sharing by adopting practically oriented views on human visual intelligence as a new territory of educational technology research.

Strategic Framework for Website Evaluation based on a Review of Tourism and Hospitality Literature from 2010-2023

  • This study examines the scientific publications on website evaluation in hospitality and tourism from 2010 to 2023 through a systematic review and discusses implications for future research. The reviewed literature from publication years, journals, research methods, website-related stakeholders, context, various forms of Internet presence (Internet forms), and theories are analyzed to create a comprehensive website evaluation dimension. Furthermore, a conceptual framework is developed to show the relationship between the website characteristics, stakeholders-channels interaction, and stakeholders' reactions. The proposed website evaluation framework in hospitality and tourism synthesizes the existing knowledge, identifies gaps, and further advances our understanding of this research area.

Social Media Advertising Effectiveness: A Conceptual Framework and Empirical Validation

  • In the era of Web 2.0, social media advertising can simultaneously stimulate consumers' brand purchase intention and brand information sharing intention. Product sales and brand information diffusion are equally important for a company that conducts advertising. This study investigates how features of brand content influence social media advertising effectiveness by integrating the stimulus-organism-response model and classic advertising effectiveness models. An analysis of 267 survey questionnaires shows that brand content-related cues, including perceived uniqueness, perceived vividness, and perceived interactivity have significant effects on consumers' affective and cognitive involvement, which then affect their attitude toward brand content. As a result, the consumers' attitude toward the brand and their brand purchase intention, as well as their brand content sharing intention, are positively affected by attitude toward brand content. This study contributes to a better understanding of how social advertising works, which suggests that managers should effectively use social media to conduct advertising.

Original Antigenic Sin Response to RNA Viruses and Antiviral Immunity

  • The human immune system has evolved to fight against foreign pathogens. It plays a central role in the body's defense mechanism. However, the immune memory geared to fight off a previously recognized pathogen, tends to remember an original form of the pathogen when a variant form subsequently invades. This has been termed 'original antigenic sin'. This adverse immunological effect can alter vaccine effectiveness and sometimes cause enhanced pathogenicity or additional inflammatory responses, according to the type of pathogen and the circumstances of infection. Here we aim to give a simplified conceptual understanding of virus infection and original antigenic sin by comparing and contrasting the two examples of recurring infections such as influenza and dengue viruses in humans.

호텔기업 종업원의 감성지능이 고객지향성과 CRM성과에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Emotional Intelligence on the Customer Orientation and Customer Relationship Management Performance of Hotel Employees)

  • Purpose - This study aimed to (a) investigate the effects of emotional intelligence on customer orientation, (b) examine the impact of customer orientation on customer relationship management (CRM) performance (including CRM-related variables such as 'relationship commitment,' 'image of corporation,' and 'customer loyalty'), and (c) identify the conceptual framework of emotional intelligence. Research design, data, and methodology - The data were collected using a questionnaire given to a sample of employees of luxury hotels in the metropolitan area. To test the hypotheses, AMOS were conducted for the 271 respondents of the sample using the SPSS Win 17.0 software. The concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has been on the radar of many leaders and managers over the past few decades. Emotional intelligence is generally accepted to be a combination of emotional and interpersonal competencies that influence behavior, thoughts, and interactions with others. Emotional intelligence consists of four factors: understanding the self's emotion, understanding other people's emotions, emotion utilization, and emotion control. Understanding the self's emotion means to understand of my own emotions. Understanding other people's emotions is to understand of the emotions of the people around me and to know how my friends feel based on their behavior. The concept of emotion utilization means to set goals for myself and then try to achieve them, encouraging myself to do my best. The concept of emotion control means I can control my temper, handle difficult situations rationally, and calm down quickly when I am very angry. Results - As a result of the analysis, three factors (understanding the self's emotion, understanding of other people's emotions, and emotion utilization) were shown to have a significant effect on customer orientation. Emotion control had an insignificant effect on customer orientation. Only emotion control makes it difficult to solve customers' problems because it is a passive behavior. In order to solve the customers' problems, hotel employees have to show a positive attitude. Second, customer orientation had a significant effect on customer relationship management performance (customer relationship commitment, corporate image, and customer loyalty). In other words, customer orientation increases commitment to customer relationships. For example, employees who have a customer-orientated perspective provide good service to their customers, while employees who don't have a customer-orientated perspective can't satisfy their customers. Customer orientation can also generate a good image among customers, because they evaluate the image of a hotel through the behavior of hotel employees. So it is very important for employees to show excellent customer orientation. Conclusions - It is very important for hotel CEOs to manage their employees' emotional intelligence. In order to increase their employees' emotional intelligence abilities, CEOs have to manage the overall corporate culture and reward programs to achieve what they want. This is because the system can lead to a customer-orientated mind-set and CRM performance among employees. As a result, the hotel CEO has to pay attention to the emotional intelligence of employees to achieve strong CRM performance. The sentence as originally written was a bit unclear. SBCD(School Based Curriculum Development)의 개념변화에 따른 개발요인 설정에 관한 연구 (The Study on Development Factor Establishing According to SBCD's Conceptual Change)

  • 본 연구는 학교중심교육과정개발(School Based Curriculum Development이하 SBCD)의 개념변화에 따라 개발상에 고려되어야 할 요인들이 무엇인지에 대해 알아보고자 문헌분석과 전문가협의회를 통해 고찰하였다. 전 세계적인 추세와 국내외의 연구동향을 중심으로 현재 SBCD가 안고 있는 문제점들을 진단하고 비중있게 고려되어야 할 개발요인들을 폭넓게 조망하였다. 연구의 결과 첫째, SBCD는 국가수준 교육과정의 수용정도에 따라 폭넓게 구분될 수 있다. 둘째, SBCD에 대한 국가와 단위학교의 이해가 상이했다. 셋째, 개발요인은 3가지 영역(인적 내용 환경영역)의 9가지 요인(직 간접 기타 참여요인, 정규 방과후 특별 교육과정, 지원체계, 교육환경, 분위기)으로 세분화할 수 있다. 효과적인 SBCD를 시도하려는 이해당사자들을 위해 SBCD의 개념변화에 따른 개발요인들을 다각적으로 고찰한 본 논문은 향후 지속적인 SBCD의 갱신과 실증연구를 위한 토대를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

초등학교 로봇컴퓨팅교육을 위한 교육내용체계의 성취기준에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Achievement Criteria of Robot Computing Curriculum for Elementary School)

  • 본 논문은 로봇 영역에 대한 교육과정을 학교현장에서 보다 쉽게 적용할 수 있도록 하기위해 개념이해와 학습활동을 고려한 교육과정 모델의 로봇 영역 교육내용체계 및 성취기준에 대한 적절성을 평가하였다. 전국 교육대학교 컴퓨터교육과 교수 전문가들이 교육내용체계의 중요도와 교육 시기의 적절성을 검토하였다. 검토 결과를 바탕으로 소 영역별 개념요소와 성취기준에 대한 수정과 보완을 거쳐 3차에 걸쳐 평가하였고, 최종적으로 개념요소와 성취기준에 대한 교육시기에 대한 합의를 거쳤다. 제안한 로봇컴퓨팅 영역에 대한 교육내용체계 및 성취기준을 학교현장 뿐만 아니라 다양한 로봇컴퓨팅 교육활동에서 학년 구분 없이 학습자의 수준에 맞게 로봇컴퓨팅 교육과정으로 재구성하여 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

화학 개념 학습에서 역할놀이 비유 활동의 효과 (The Influences of Role-Playing Analogy in Chemistry concept Learning)

  • 이 연구에서는 역할놀이 비유 활동의 효과를 학생들의 개념 이해도, 개념 응용력, 학습 동기 측면에서 조사하였다. 서울시의 남녀공학 중학교에서 1학년 4학급을 선정하여 처치 집단과 통제 집단에 무선배치하고 '분자의 운동'에 대하여 4차시 동안 수업을 시시하였다. 처치 집단은 역할놀이 비유 수업을 실시하고 통제 집단은 전통적 수업을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 개념 이해, 개념 응용의 파지, 그리고 학습 동기 중 자신감에서 처치 집단의 점수가 통제 집단에 비해 유의미하게 높았다. 또한, 개념 응용과 학습 동기 중 주의집중 및 관련성 영역에서 수업 처치와 성의 상호작용 효과가 있었다. 개념 응용력 검사의 경우 처치 집단의 남학생과 여학생 모두 통계 집단의 학생들보다 유의미하게 높은 점수를 받았다. 주의집중 및 관련성 검사에서는 처치 집단의 남학생들이 통제 집단의 남학생들 보다 유의미하게 높은 점수를 받았다. 이에 대한 교육학적 함의를 논의 하였다.
