  • This paper presents a method for designing layout on the yard and evaluating alternative designs of the layout by applying simulation. The method is based on the concepts of the conventional port container terminal with a perpendicular yard layout. In general, yard design of the container terminal is consists of the two major parts. One is to divide yard area between the number of sections and the number of runs and the other is to decide the number of equipment that is the yard truck and yard crane. In the past days, this design was depended on the experience of the terminal operator and the structure of the conventional terminal layout because it is a very complex decision problem. In this paper we suggest the method of yard design as a conceptual procedure and estimate the efficiency of the container crane and the optimal the number of equipment using the simulation. Numerical examples are provided in order to illustrate the conceptual procedure. As the example, the suggested method and simulation are applied to the virtual container terminal with a perpendicular yard layout. In the results, the number of sections and runs on yard area, the number of yard truck per container crane and the number of yard crane per run are decided. In additional, the traffic among blocks on yard layout is estimated in terms of rate.

  • In this study, a preliminary trajectory design is conducted for a conceptual spacecraft mission to a near-Earth asteroid (NEA) (99942) Apophis, which is expected to pass by Earth merely 32,000 km from the Earth's surface in 2029. This close approach event will provide us with a unique opportunity to study changes induced in asteroids during close approaches to massive bodies, as well as the general properties of NEAs. The conceptual mission is set to arrive at and rendezvous with Apophis in 2028 for an advanced study of the asteroid, and some near-optimal (in terms of fuel consumption) trajectories under this mission architecture are to be investigated using a global optimization algorithm called monotonic basin hopping. It is shown that trajectories with a single swing-by from Venus or Earth, or even simpler ones without gravity assist, are the most feasible. In addition, launch opportunities in 2029 yield another possible strategy of leaving Earth around the 2029 close approach event and simply following the asteroid thereafter, which may be an alternative fuel-efficient option that can be adopted if advanced studies of Apophis are not required.

  • This paper presents a conceptual design approach of air-cored synchronous machine with high temperature superconductor (HTS) field winding. With a given configuration of a target machine, boundary conditions are set in the cylindrical coordinate system and analytic field calculation is performed by solving a governing equation. To set proper boundary conditions, current distributions of the field winding and the armature winding are expressed by the Fourier expansion. Based on analytic magnetic field calculation results, key machine parameters are calculated: 1) inductance, 2) critical current of field winding, 3) weight, 4) HTS conductor consumption, and 5) efficiency. To investigate all potential design options, 6 sweeping parameters are determined to characterize the geometry of the machine and the parameter calculation process is performed for each design options. Among design options satisfying constraints including >80 % critical current margin and >95 % efficiency, in this paper, a first-cut design was selected in terms of overall machine weight and HTS conductor consumption to obtain a lightweight and economical design. The goal is to design a 5-MW machine by referring to the same capacity machine that was previously constructed by another group. Our design output is compared with finite element method (FEM) simulation to validate our design approach.

  • To carry out a one-off construction project successfully, effective and accurate early cost estimation is crucial, especially during the conceptual stage where very limited minimum information of construction project is given. As the level of accuracy of the early cost estimation has huge impacts on precise budgeting and cost management of a project, in other words, reducing the risk of a project, cost must be managed with special awareness. In an effort to improve the estimate accuracy of cost during the conceptual stage, this research introduces a Parameter Impact (PI) which can quantify weights of parameters and rank them; and PI development derived from the principle of impulse in physics is explicated. For a case study, 76 public apartment building cases in Korea are analyzed. To examine the validity of the proposed PI, a validation in terms of CBR applicability test and estimate accuracy comparisons using 10-nearest neighbor cases are carried out. The validation results support that the suggested PI can be applied in quantifying the weights of the parameters and CBR method for early cost estimation.

  • The current study aims to analyze the acceptance of International Standard Terminology (IST) related to herbs and formulas used in Korea. It also intends to examine limitations of each term source by linking texts for herbal medicine research and formula research used in schools of oriental medicine with medicinal substance-formula classification names within the IST framework. This study examined 64 medicinal classification names of IST, including synonyms, 41 formula classification names, 65 classification names of "Herbal Medicine Study," 89 medicinal classification names of "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study," and lastly 83 formula classification names of "Formula Study." Data on their chief virtue, efficacy and characteristics as medicinal substances were extracted from their definitions, and such data were used to perform Chinese character-English mapping using the IST. The outcomes of the mapping were then analyzed in terms of both lexical matching and semantic matching. In terms of classification names for medicinal substances, "Herbal Medicine Study" had 60.0% lexical matching, whereas "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" had 48.3% lexical matching. When semantic matching was also applied, "Herbal Medicine Study" showed a value of 87.7% and "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" 74.2%. In terms of formula classification names, lexical matching was 28.9% of 83 subjects, and when semantic matching was also considered, the value was 30.1%. When the conceptual elements of this study were applied, some IST terms that are classified with other codes were found to be conceptually consistent, and some terms were not accepted due to different depths in the classification systems of each source.

  • This study aims to suggest the conceptual framework for the Nature of Technology (NOT) by examining the current researches regarding the NOT in science and technology education and to analyze the conceptions of experts in science, technology, and engineering fields based on the framework of NOT. The NOT conceptual framework developed in the study consisted of the six domains of NOT, which are 1. Technology as artifacts, 2. Technology as knowledge, 3. Technology as practice, 4. Technology as system, 5. The role of technology in society, and 6. History of technology. Also, the results of analyzing the conceptions for the 30 experts in science, technology, and engineering fields emphasize on the three domains of the 3. Technology as practice, 4. Technology as system, and 5. The role of technology in society among the 6 domains of the framework of the six domains of the NOT framework. This findings are different from the results of previous researches conducted in science and technology education for exploring the conceptions of NOT in the POV of the public and students. As such, the results show that while the public and students possess naive ideas on NOT only focusing on the technology as products and tools, experts in science, technology, and engineering fields possess the authentic views of the NOT reflecting the complex and abstract concepts of technology in terms of the perspectives of philosophy of technology.

  • Today's war fields can be characterized by net-centric wars where a variety of independent weapon systems are operated in connection with each other via networks. As such, weapon systems become dramatically advanced in terms of complexity, functionality, precision and so on. It is then obvious that the defense R&D of those requires systematic and efficient development tools enabling the effective management of the complexity, budget/cost, development time, and risk all together. One viable approach is known to be the development methods based on systems engineering, which is already proved to successful in U.S. In this paper, a systems engineering approach is studied to be used in the conceptual design of advanced weapon systems. The approach is utilizing some graphical models in the design phase. As a target system, an unmanned aerial vehicle system is considered and the standard SysML is also used as a modeling language to create models. The generated models have several known merits such as ease of understanding and communication. The interrelationships between the models and the design artifacts are identified, which should be useful in the generation of some design documents that are required in the defense R&D. The result reported here could be utilized in the further study that can eventually lead to a full-scale model-based systems engineering method.

  • The origin of natural planting, which is getting the spotlight in modern time facing natural and environmental problems, can be found from wild gardens. They were started by William Robinson and concretely embodied by Gertrude Jekyll. It is worth shedding new light on wild gardens, as they served as a pathbreaker for ecological design and an important foundation for the specialization of naturalism, which are part of the most important topics in modern gardens. This study aimed to infer the conceptual model of wild gardens and identify their historic significance by comparatively analyzing Robinson's Gravetye Manor and Jekyll's Munstead Wood. The results are: Firstly, they inherited inspirations for spatial organization from basic cottage gardens and introduced informal forms. Secondly, in terms of the use of materials, they had observed various climates in their journeys so that they could use both native and naturalized plants based on their understanding of the plants' hardiness and exotic species. They also displayed interests in plants in the woodlands and forests. Thirdly, in terms of design techniques, they investigated the colors and textures of individual plants and their relationships to produce a variety of views that resembled nature in microcosm. Fourthly, in terms of maintenance, their basic orientation was the minimum maintenance to allow plants to live according to their nature.

  • The purpose of the study was to construct a system based on the semantic web environment's ontology by utilizing the ontology schema derived from the facet-type Art and Architecture Thesaurus(AAT). The aforementioned ontology schema is based on the Web Ontology Language(OWL), which is being widely considered the standard ontology language for the W3C-centered semantic web environment. Also, the concepts were limited to terms within AAT'S Furniture Facet, and the system was tested using the Chair concept, which is a lower-level facet that has a diverse conceptual relationship and broad vocabulary base. The ontology system is capable of searching for concepts, while controlling the search results by always providing a 'Preferred term' for synonymous terms. In addition, the system provides the user with first, a relationship between the terms centered around the inquiry, and second, related terms along with their classification properties. Also, the system is presented as and application example of the ontology system that constructs a information system that intakes an Instance value and reproduces it into a RDF file. During this process, utilization of multiple ontologies was introduced, and the stored Instance value's meta-data elements were used.
