A level-set finite-element method is employed to investigate the free surface flow of two conceptual fish passage designs. While one design has a right-angled entrance from the reservoir to the fish passage chute, the other has a curved-shaped entrance. The numerical results are validated with hydraulic experiments through comparison of the free surface location and the pressure distribution in the spillway. It is observed that the right-angled design yields a curved free surface and pressure distribution in the vicinity of the entrance due to large strains, whereas the curved-shaped design yields a smooth flow transition with small strains. The subatmospheirc pressure distributions near the spillway ogee crest for both designs exhibit similar flow patterns. It is concluded that the curved-shaped design is more favorable for fish passage because of the feature of a smooth flow transition with small strains.
This paper proposes a Situation Simulation Framework for implementing computer game and describes the possibility of analyzing game with unfolding situation. In last few years game systems have been evolving from the performance of physical engine, network traffic in the on line game to the representation of rendering physical phenomena. In computer game, a situation hierarchy structure which allows the designer for simulating high-level specifications of game structure. Logically simulated environment is created by defining situations and events based on hierarchy structure of the situation. We classify events into explicit event is occurred by user and implicit event is occurred by system. Our study defines the existence of objects is the most prevalent factor applied to any event in game world. The advantages of this approach are able to allow for providing the conceptual design for simulation game and analyzing the situation in the game world. And this method allows us to decrease the complexity of system design and abstraction modeling for the simulation game. Specially, the introduction of the definition of events allows us to approach game design in a structural manner rather than by their classification. The proposed method was implemented in the "Shooting BaDuk" among games.
High-performing architecture should be designed by taking into account the mutual dependency between the new building and the local context. The performative architecture plays an important role to avert any unforeseen failures after the building has been built; particularly ones related to the microclimate impacts that affect the human comfort. The use of the concept of solar envelopes helps designers to construct the developable mass of the building design considering the solar access and the site obstruction. However, the current analysis method using solar envelopes lack in terms of integrating the detailed information of the existing context during the simulation process. In architectural design, often the current site modelling not only absent in preserving the complex geometry but also information on the surface characteristics. Currently, the emerging applications of point clouds offer a great possibility to overcome these limitations, since they include the attribute information such as XYZ as the position information and RGB as the color information. This study particularly presents a comparative analysis between the manually built 3D models and the models generated from the point cloud data. The modelling comparisons focus on the relevant factors of solar radiation and a set of simulation to calculate the performance indicators regarding selected portions of the models. The experimental results emphasize an introduction of the design approach and the dataset visibility of the 3D existing environments. This paper ultimately aims at improving the current architectural decision of support environment means, by increasing the correspondence between the digital models for performance analysis and the real environments (context of design) during the conceptual design phase.
Purpose - The exhibition is one of the critical distribution channels that leads to mass sales of products. Servicescape is considered as an effective means facilitating consumers' purchasing behavior. The objective of this research is to examine the effects of servicescape of the exhibition on consumer's purchasing behavior measured by time spent, the number of consultations, the number of items purchased, and amount of money spent. Research design, data, and methodology - Servicescape was divided into four main components: 'spatial layout/functionality', 'ambient condition', 'design/artifacts', and 'human factor'. Based on previous studies, this study hypothesized that servicescape dimensions first influence consumer's shopping duration and the number of consultations which in turn, affects consumer's actual purchase. A total of 407 samples were collected from attendees in Baby Expo taken place in Kyunggido, South Korea. The data were used to assess overall fit of the proposed model and test hypotheses using structural equation modeling. All the constructs had acceptable levels of composite reliability and convergent and discriminant validity. Results - The results showed that except for 'spatial layout/functionality', all components of servicescape had a significant influence on consumer's shopping duration in the exhibition. Except for 'design/artifacts', other factors of servicescape did not show a significant effect on 'the number of consultations'. Interestingly, 'design/artifacts' exerted a significant negative effect on 'the number of consultations'. As expected, 'time spent' and 'number of consultations' showed significant effects on both 'the number of items purchased' and 'amount of money spent'. Conclusions - The results offer some insights into the effect of servicescape on facilitating consumers' purchasing behavior in the context of the exhibition. Theoretically, this study provides a new type of conceptual framework that verifies the relationships between not only servicescape and purchasing behavior, but also purchasing behavior-related variables. In addition, this study supports the concept of a dark side of servicescape. With regards to practical implications, this study suggests that exhibition organizers should put more efforts in facilitating consumer's desire to stay. More importantly, organizers need to keep in mind that excessive emphasis on 'design/artifacts' to increase consumers' shopping duration can cause a side effect that reduces opportunities for interactions with customers.
The Mobile Harbor(MH) is a new transportation platform that can load and unload containers to and from very large container ships in the sea. This loading and unloading by crane can be performed with only very small movements of the MH in waves because MH is operated outside of the harbor. For this reason, an anti-rolling tank(ART) and an active mass driving system(AMD) were designed to reduce MH's roll motion, especially at the natural frequency of MH. In the conceptual design stage, it is difficult to confirm the design result of theses anti-rolling devices without modeling and simulation tools. Therefore, the coupled MH and anti-rolling devices' dynamic equations in waves were derived and a simulation program that can analyze the roll reduction performance in various conditions, such as sea state, wave direction, and so on, was developed. The coupled equations are constructed as an eight degrees of freedom (DOF) motion that consists of MH's six DOF dynamics and the ART's and AMD's control variables. In order to conveniently include the ART's and AMD's control dynamics in the time domain, MH's radiated wave force was described by an impulse response function derived by the damping coefficient obtained in the frequency domain, and wave exciting forces such as Froude-Krylov force and diffraction force and nonlinear buoyancy were calculated at every simulation time interval. Finally, the roll reduction performances of the designed anti-rolling devices were successfully assessed in the various loading and wave conditions by using a developed simulation program.
Compared to the wide spread of convergence in government and industries there are still lack of theoretical foundation and effective methodologies to successfully implement it. Especially, there are few remarkable results on the ideal types of convergence business model (BM) in both domestic and foreign researchers. In this paper we show theoretical types, strategic alternatives, and design steps of convergence BM could be developed based on '4WH1H model' which is a conceptual framework of a BM. 4W1H model includes 5 constituents of a BM, i. e., customer value, value proposition, operation, target market, and supply capability. We derive 5 theoretical types of convergence BMs depending on the focus of innovation, i.e., value, product, operation, market, and capability. After defining the constituents and types (i.e., structural aspects) of convergence BM, we also show a BM could be linked with business strategy by defining the interaction among 5 constituents (i.e., behavioral aspects) of convergence BM.
The health and medical service attracts more public attention as the economy of Korea is rapidly growing up and the standard of living is elevated. Especially, the interest and demand on the prehospital emergency medical service that consists of the important part of primary medical service that is directly related to the life of patients are gradually increased. However, as compared with other advanced countries such as America in this area, Korea actually fell behind in the utilization of IT (Information Technology) to maximize the efficiency of emergency service system as well as has a problem in the general service system. This study suggested the necessity to introduce EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) system that takes a great role as the core part in the prehospital emergency medical service that is not systemized in Korea yet. In addition, this study proposed the implementation model of EMD ASP system using ASP (Application Service Provider) in EMD system to flexibly deal with the change of IT and efficient implementation and integration of information system as well as to significantly reduce cost through wire/wireless high speed Internet network that is politically promoted in Korea on the basis of EMD. The system analysis and design was executed by HIPO (Hierarchy Plus Input Process Output) analysis that was the conceptual design technology for EMD information system modeling based on ASP and DFD (Data Flow Diagram). This study proposed DB table configuration and data schema to implement the application of web browser interface in EMD system through ERD(ER-Diagram) of EMD ASP system. Finally, this study described how to implement and utilize EMD information system. This study aims to facilitate the qualitative development of emergency medical service in the future as suggesting the concrete models for the implementation of high value-added prehospital emergency medical information system as applying ASP concept to EMD system of prehospital emergency medical service area.
The objective of this study is to consider the uniform as visual communication, and analyze the expression of symbol shown on the uniform design by the pattern by applying the visual symbol in the communication and operation of the meaning. Also, it is to construct the systematic modeling method of the expression of design symbol by the pattern of uniform in th e various fields. This study is to analyze the symbolic expression method of the uniform design by the pattern by suggesting the symbolic expression method as a frame through the visual symbolic approach of the uniform design and the analysis of semantic symbol according to that. As a result, there arose simplification and emphasis and a method of symbolic expression with the national flag, a conceptual factor characteristically in the sports uniform design. The characteristics of symbolic expression of uniform design were mainly used in the symbolic expression with the customary code and symbol. Also, the uniform in the enterprises were widely used in the expression of uniform with the suggestion and code by the color. As for the characteristics of symbolic expression shown on the event uniform design, the method of symbolic expression by the pattern of uniform was grasped differently asa result of symbolic expression through the image. The method of symbolic expression suggested on this study could be used on a basis of uniform design in the future. Accordingly, this study has a meaning of suggesting the methodology of uniform design that would be a parameter.
The purpose of this study was to examine female consumers' attitudes and purchase intentions toward intimate apparel brands. To understand female consumers' shopping behaviors for intimate apparel products, this study examined interrelationships among brand familiarity, perceived risk, attitudes, and purchase intentions toward intimate apparel brands. A conceptual model was developed by adopting perceived risk theory (Cox, 1967) and theory of reasoned action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980). A pre-survey using a paper and pencil was conducted to identify the most familiar intimate apparel brand to young female consumers. The majority of pre-survey respondents (66 female college students) indicated Victoria's Secret as the most prominent intimate apparel brand. Therefore, Victoria's Secret was used to examine possible effects of brand familiarity on perceived risk and attitudinal and behavioral responses toward the brand. Using a web-based survey, 384 complete responses were collected from young female college students between the ages of 18-29 at a Mid-southern U.S. university. A structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed research model and hypotheses. Results showed positive, statistically significant associations among the four variables (e.g., brand familiarity, perceived risk, attitudes, and purchase intentions). The findings suggested that young female consumers who are familiar with a particular intimate apparel brand are likely to perceive a low level of risk, leading to positive, strong attitudes with purchase intentions toward that particular intimate apparel brand. This suggests establishing brand familiarity through integrated marketing communication is crucial for risk reduction strategy in intimate apparel shopping.
Tall Buildings have been one of the most prominent symbols of economic growth for nearly a century. Yet, in the aftermath of the tragedies of September 11, "signature" Tall buildings have become the focus of much debate. The structural systems today are undergoing a major evolution to address the ability of providing flexibility in the design and use of the building together with sustainability (Green) and cost-effective system. This paper describes a new invented structural system, evolutionary structural analysis and design of Tall buildings, which involves the entire analysis process, including conceptual and design stages and comparison with the existing Tall building. This study presents an new innovative structural system, Beehive (Hexagrid), for Tall buildings. The final results are achieved by modeling an 80 story Tall building with the optimized angle and topology of hexagon members by using a computer analysis, ETABS finite element analysis. The objective function of this system is to use one structural system in order to both maximize Eigen frequency for resisting dynamic responses and minimize mean compliance for static responses. Finite element analysis is carried out by using standardized materials. Optimal Hexagrid topologies with the highest stiffness are finally determined to resist both static and dynamic behaviors. Holistic design integration approaches between structures and facades to save energy for environmental control are studied. Innovative design ideas to control structural motion as well as to utilize that motion to harness energy are discussed. Considering abundant emergence of tall buildings all over the world in recent years, the importance of the studies presented in this paper cannot be overemphasized for constructing more sustainable built environments.
