  • Analytical solutions for the forced convection heat transfer of viscoelastic fluids obeying the Giesekus model are obtained in a concentric annulus under laminar flow for both thermal and hydrodynamic fully developed conditions. Boundary conditions are assumed to be (a) constant fluxes at the walls and (b) constant temperature at the walls. Temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are derived from dimensionless energy equation. Subsequently, effects of elasticity, mobility parameter and viscous dissipation are discussed. Results show that by increasing elasticity, Nusselt number increases. However, this trend is reversed for constant wall temperature when viscous dissipation is weak. By increasing viscous dissipation, the Nusselt number decreases for the constant flux and increases for the constant wall temperature. For the wall cooling case, when the viscous dissipation exceeds a critical value, the generated heat overcomes the heat which is removed at the walls, and fluid heats up longitudinally.

  • The objective of present study is to analyze a concentric triple-passage heat exchanger for an optimal design of a continuous hot steel-tube cooling system, where a hot-steel tube line is passing through an antioxidant gas with a constant speed. Velocities and temperatures of the inert gas flowing between inner and outer tubes are calculated theoretically for laminar and numerically for turbulent flow regimes. From their profiles Nusselt numbers and friction factors are calculated (or various ratios of inner/outer tube radii and relative velocities. With these Nusselt numbers triple-passage heat exchangers are investigated for their thermal characteristics. It is shown that heat transfer coefficients based on ratios of average heat fluxes from inner and outer tubes might result in great errors for the temperature distributions of the flows, since local heat transfer coefficients for flows through an annulus are dependent on local wall heat flux ratios.

  • Thermofluid flow analysis is major subject in most computational fluid dynamics applications. Accompanying convective and conductive heat transport phenomena, radiation plays an important role in high temperature operating systems. Cares in which the radiation dominates are found in such systems as boilers, furnaces, rocket engines, etc. In this paper the finite-volume method (FVM) are employed to simulate two-dimensional radiation problems in concentric and eccentric horizontal cylindrical annuli with general body-fitted coordinates. In that case the simplest and intuitive remedies are proposed for mitigation of ray effect.

  • The flow between two concentric cylinders, with the inner one rotating and with an imposed pressure-driven axial flow, is studied using numerical simulation. The case without the axial flow was investigated in the preceding paper. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow[Phys. Fluid, 11(12), 1999]. They carried out experiments using PIV to measure the velocity fields in a meridional plane of the annulus in detail. When an axial flow is imposed, the critical Taylor number is increased. The axial flow stabilizes the flow field and decreases the torque required to rotate the inner cylinder. The velocity vector fields obtained also show the same flow features found in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow.

  • The flow between two concentric cylinders, with the inner one rotating, is studied using numerical simulation. This study considers the identical flow geometry as in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow[J. Fluid Mech., 364, 1998]. They carried out experiment using PIV to measure the velocity fields in a meridional plane of the annulus in detail. When Taylor number increases over the critical one, the flow instability caused by curved streamlines of the tangential flow induces Taylor vortices in the flow direction. As Taylor number further increases over another critical one, the steady Taylor vortices become unsteady and non-axisymmetrically wavy. The velocity vector fields obtained also show the same flow features found in the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow.

  • Numerical simulation was applied to investigate the Taylor vortex flow inside the concentric cylinders with a constant radial temperature gradient. The reliability of numerical simulation method was verified by the experimental results of PIV. The radial velocity and temperature distribution in plain and 12-slit model at different axial locations were compared, and the heat flux distributions along the inner cylinder wall at different work conditions were obtained. In the plain model, the average surface heat flux of inner cylinder increased with the inner cylinder rotation speed. In slit model, the slit wall significantly changed the distribution of flow field and temperature in the annulus gap, and the radial flow was strengthen obviously, which promoted the heat transfer process at the same working condition.

  • The exergy analysis on the heat storage performance of the senible heat storage unit which consists of the heat storage material in the concentric annulus and the hot fluid flowing through the inner tube is performed. Heat transfer characteristics which are necessary for the performance of the exergy analysis is obtained from the energy balance equations and the second law of thermodynamics. As the index of heat storage performance, the exergy lossnumber $N_{s}$, and exergy storage ratio from the concepts of the second law of thermodynamics are defined. Results are ovtained for the grometry of the storage unit, the Biot number Bi, ambient temperature $T_{o}$ as parameters. From these results the exergy storage ratio can be considered as the efficiency of the hat storage unit and is introduced as a guide to design.

  • The paper concerns an experimental study of fully developed laminar flow of a Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid in concentric annuli with combined bulk axial flow and inner cylinder rotation. Pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for Newtonian fluid, water and non-Newtonian fluids, 0.2% aqueous of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 5% bentonite solutions, when the inner cylinder rotates at the speed of $0{\sim}500$ rpm. The influences of rotation, radius ratio and working fluid on the annular flow field are investigated. And the new correlations among the skin friction coefficient, the Reynolds number and the Rossby number are presented with reasonable limits of accuracy in laminar flow regime.

  • Numerical study was performed to investigate the convective heat transfer of Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through the concentric double pipe counterflow heat exchangers. Hot fluid flowing through the inner pipe transfers its heat to cooling fluid flowing in the outer pipe. Effects of important parameters such as hot and cold volume flow rates, fluid type in the outer and inner pipes, and nanoparticles concentration on the heat transfer and flow characteristics are investigated. The results indicated that the heat transfer performance increases with increasing the hot and cold volume flow rates, as well as the particle concentrations. When both outer and inner pipes are nanofluids with 8% nanoparticle volume concentration, nanofluids showed up to 17% better heat transfer rate than basic fluids. Also, the average heat transfer coefficient of the base fluid for annulus-side improved by 31%. Approximately 20% enhancement in the heat exchanger effectiveness can be achieved with the addition of 8% alumina particles in base fluid. But, addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid enhanced friction factor by about 196%.

  • Steady-state two-dimensional natural convective heat transfer in horizontal cylindrical annuli was studied by solving the governing equations based on the primitive variables. Emphasis was put on the occurrence of the multiple solutions at a given set of parameter values, and on the determination of the bifurcation points at which those multiple solutions begin to branch out. The multicellular flow pattern from the results of melting process in an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder for high Rayleigh numbers, was used as initial guesses for the field variables. This was succeeded in new bifurcation point to tetracellular solutions for an identical set of parameter variables of previous works. The close examination of flow pattern transition around bifurcation point was also conducted. It was found that the mechanisms of flow transition are different depending on the critical Rayleigh number of bifurcation point.
