The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using two-dimensional model by the combination of land-sea breezes and transport. The pollutants emitted into the simulated wind field in considering with the mesoscale local circulations. The typical effects of land-sea breezes and tophography of coastal area on the dispersion are discussed in detail, and the model is proved as an useful tool to pridict real time pollutant transport by the results of application studies in Pusan, Korea where the urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) are differently transported and concentrated as going inland by the influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes. Key words : land-sea breezes, sulfur dioxide, dispersion, coastal area.
The wind flow and pollutant dispersion over a two-dimensional sinusoidal hilly obstacle with slope (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.7 have been investigated experimentally and numerically. Flow over a single sinusoidal hill model was visualized in a subsonic wind tunnel. The mean velocity profiles, turbulence statistics, and pollutant concentration distribution were measured at the Reynolds number based on the obstacle height (H=40mm) oft $2.6\times10^4$. Experimental results for flow over a flat ground were agreed with the theoretical and numerical results. When a pollutant source is located behind the hilly terrain, the pollutant dispersion appeared even in the upstream region due to recirculation flow.

The influence of several experimental parameters on the formation of stable Alloy 625 nanoparticles dispersion in ethanol was investigated. Several analyzing methods were applied, like transmission profiles measured by Turbiscan, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, gas chromatography, and particle size analyzer. The correlation among the increase of particle sizes, caused by nanoparticle coalescence and collision, concentration of dispersant and time was presented and discussed. The optimum conditions for the formation of stable dispersion are evaluated.
Meteorological parameters In the atmospheric boundary layer and the vertical and horizontal dispersion parameters were determined by analyzing the data obtained by the special upper-air observations of one clear day for each season from October 1991 to August 1992. The concentration of the aklospheric pollutants over Taegu was analyzed by using the application of the Gaussian diffusion model. In the diurnal variation of diffusion of atmospheric pollutants, vertical diffusion due to turbulence is active in daytime while horizontal diffusion due to wind is active in nighttime. The mean concentration of pollutants in the side of downwind is higher during the daytime than the nighttime. Thus, the height of the mixed-layer at the nighttime considered as the most important parameter of the mean concentration of pollutants. In the seasonal variation of diffusion of atmospheric pollutants, vertical diffusion due to strong solar radiation is active in summer case day, and horizontal diffusion due to strong wind is active in winter case day. In winter case day, the mean concentration of pollutants in the side of downwind is maximum in the daytime. However, in summer case day, that is maximum in the nighttime.
In this study, the scenario for a numerical modeling of the fine grid scale air dispersion phenomena was proposed and an analysis of the special event which was occurred on September 3, 2002 was performed using by a coarse grid prognostic meteorological model, a fine grid diagnostic meteorological model and a fine grid air dispersion model. Based on the results, we found that the local circulations, like as land-sea breeze, should be seriously considered for evaluating the high PM10 concentration event and for making the reduction policy of the major air pollutant emissions in Ansan area.
The objective of this study is to investigate numerically the effect of building roof shaps on wind flow and pollutant dispersion in a street canyon with one row of trees of pore volume, $P_{vol}=96%$. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to evaluate air flow and pollutant dispersion within an urban street canyon using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM) based on k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to close the equation system. The numerical model is performed with ANSYS-CFX code. Vehicle emissions were simulated as double line sources along the street. The numerical model was validated by the wind tunnel experiment results. Having established this, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons (with six roof shapes buildings) are simulated. The numerical simulation results agree reasonably with the wind tunnel data. The results obtained in this work, indicate that the flow in 3D domain is more complicated; this complexity is increased with the presence of trees and variability of the roof shapes. The results also indicated that the largest pollutant concentration level for two walls (leeward and windward wall) is observed with the upwind wedge-shaped roof. But the smallest pollutant concentration level is observed with the dome roof-shaped.
In many solute transport studies, either flux or resident concentration has been used. Choice of the concentration mode was dependent on the monitoring device in solute displacement experiments. It has been accepted that no priority exists in the selection of concentration mode in the study of solute transport. It would be questionable, however, to accept the equivalency in the solute transport parameters between flux and resident concentrations in structured soils exhibiting preferential movement of solute. In this study, we investigate how they differ in the monitored breakthrough curves (BTCs) and transport parameters for a given boundary and flow condition by performing solute displacement experiments on a number of undisturbed soil columns. Both flux and resident concentrations have been simultaneously obtained by monitoring the effluent and resistance of the horizontally-positioned TDR probes. Two different solute transport models namely, convection-dispersion equation (CDE) and convective lognormal transfer function (CLT) models, were fitted to the observed breakthrough data in order to quantify the difference between two concentration modes. The study reveals that soil columns having relatively high flux densities exhibited great differences in the degree of peak concentration and travel time of peak between flux and resident concentrations. The peak concentration in flux mode was several times higher than that in resident one. Accordingly, the estimated parameters of flux mode differed greatly from those of resident mode and the difference was more pronounced in CDE than CLT model. Especially in CDE model, the parameters of flux mode were much higher than those of resident mode. This was mainly due to the bypassing of solute through soil macropores and failure of the equilibrium CDE model to adequate description of solute transport in studied soils. In the domain of the relationship between the ratio of hydrodynamic dispersion to molecular diffusion and the peclet number, both concentrations fall on a zone of predominant mechanical dispersion. However, it appears that more molecular diffusion contributes to the solute spreading in the matrix region than the macropore region due to the nonliearity present in the pore water velocity and dispersion coefficient relationship.
Dispersion stability of nano-sized rutile TiO$_2$powder with acicular typed primary particle produced by homogeneous precipitation process at low temperatures was studied in aqueous and non-aqueous media in the presence of various electrolytes. The zeta potential measurements have shown that the addition of electrolytes to aqueous and non-aqueous dispersion media leads to charge reversal on TiO$_2$particle surface. The electrostatic repulsive forces acting on between TiO$_2$particles dispersed in non-aqueous media were found to be significantly greater than that in aqueous media, which relate closely to the physical properties of the organic solvents, such as viscosities and dielectric constants. The pH values, the concentration of electrolytes and the valence of the ions have changed greatly the surface potential of TiO$_2$ particles and have governed the dispersion behavior of TiO$_2$particles virtually.

The purpose of this study is to compare the usefulness between Gaussian dispersion model and receptor model with the experimental result of the dispersion tracing of the particulate pollutants from Taean coal-fired power plants. For this purpose, the component analysis of the collected PM 10 samples was performed. In order to trace the pollution sources, factor analysis was done with the result of the component analysis. As a result of the correlativity analysis of the fifteen power plants' profiles offered by US EPA, the correlativity of No.11202 source profile showed highest rate up to 84.5%. Thus it was adopted as proper one and the contribution rate by each pollution source was calculated by Chemical Mass Balance (CMB)-8 model. The contribution rate, which was the effect rate of the power plants on each measuring point, were calculated with a range of 24∼52% and the standard error was below 0.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. This indicates the selection of the source profile was appropriate. Also, the concentrations of each point were calculated by the ISCST3 which is suggested by US EPA as one of the regulatory Gaussian dispersion model. The calculation result showed that the predicted concentration was 50∼58 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, comparing with the measured result of 9∼65 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. It was found that the concentration calculated by ISCST3 was underpredicted. It was thought that the receptor model was more favorable than the Gaussian dispersion model in estimating the effect of the particulate matter on a certain receptive point.

Dispersion coefficient preprocessing schemes have been examined to improve plume dispersion model performance in complex coastal areas. The performances of various schemes for constructing the sigma correction order were evaluated through estimations of statistical measures, such as bias, gross error, R, FB, NMSE, within FAC2, MG, VG, IOA, UAPC and MRE. This was undertaken for the results of dispersion modeling, which applied each scheme. Environmental factors such as sampling time, surface roughness, plume rising, plume height and terrain rolling were considered in this study. Gaussian plume dispersion model was used to calculate 1 hr $SO_2$ concentration 4 km downwind from a power plant in Boryeung coastal area. Here, measured data for January to December of 2002 were obtained so that modelling results could be compared. To compare the performances between various schemes, integrated scores of statistical measures were obtained by giving weights for each measure and then summing each score. This was done because each statistical measure has its own function and criteria; as a result, no measure can be taken as a sole index indicative of the performance level for each modeling scheme. The best preprocessing scheme was discerned using the step-wise method. The most significant factor influencing the magnitude of real dispersion coefficients appeared to be sampling time. A second significant factor appeared to be surface roughness, with the rolling terrain being the least significant for elevated sources in a gently rolling terrain. The best sequence of correcting the sigma from P-G scheme was found to be the combination of (1) sampling time, (2) surface roughness, (3) plume rising, (4) plume height, and (5) terrain rolling.
