  • Red-orange phosphors $Gd_{1-x}PO_4:{Eu_x}^{3+}$ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) were synthesized with changing the concentration of $Eu^{3+}$ ions using a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structures, surface morphology, and optical properties of the ceramic phosphors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometry. The XRD results were in accordance with JCPDS (32-0386), and the crystal structures of all the red-orange phosphors were found to be a monoclinic system. The SEM results showed that the size of grains increases and then decreases as the concentration of $Eu^{3+}$ ionincreases. As for the PL properties, all of the ceramic phosphors, irrespective of $Eu^{3+}$ ion concentration, had orange and red emissions peaks at 594 nm and 613 nm, respectively. The maximum excitation and emission spectra were observed at 0.10 mol of $Eu^{3+}$ ion concentration, just like the grain size. An orange color stronger than the red means that $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_1$ (magnetic dipole transition) is dominant over the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ (electric dipole transition), and $Eu^{3+}$ is located at the center of the inversion symmetry. These properties contrasted with those of a red phosphor $Y_{1-x}PO_4:{Eu_x}^{3+}$, which has a tetragonal system. Therefore, we confirm that the crystal structure of the host material has a major effect on the resulting color.

  • Monitoring of pH, especially under highly alkaline conditions, is necessary in various processes in the industrial, biotechnological, agricultural, and environmental fields. However, few pH indicators that can function at highly alkaline levels are available, and most of which are organic-based pH indicators. Several years ago, it was reported that gold nanoparticles prepared using trisodium citrate dihydrate were rapidly aggregated at pH values higher than ~12.7. A shift of surface plasmon resonance for such aggregated gold nanoparticles can be applied to pH indicators, allowing for the substitution of traditional organic-based pH indicators. The most important characteristic of pH indicators is the transition pH range. Herein, gold and silver nanoparticles are prepared using different reducing agents, and their transition pH ranges are examined. The results showed that all nanoparticles prepared in this study exhibit similar transition pH ranges spanning 11.9-13.0, regardless of the nanoparticle material, reducing agents, and concentration.

  • To understand the effects of the fraction from Chrysanthemum coronarium L. (CC), we prepared five different types of samples, denoted here as CCMM, CCMH, CCMEA, CCMB and CCMA. We studied the effects of these samples on the phase transition of liposomal membranes by high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (nano-DSC). We used dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers which make most stable liposomes among the other phosphatidylcholines. When the samples were added to the bilayers, the phase transition temperatures of DPPC liposomes incorporated with CCMH and CCMEA were decreased by 1.5 and 2^{\circ}C$, while the other three fractions showed less tendencies. The CCMH and CCMEA fractions markedly affected the thermotropic properties of DPPC liposomes, broadened and shifted the thermograms of DSC. It also significantly reduced the size of cooperative unit of the transition. In all cases, there was no change in enthalpy of transition within the concentration range of the CC fractions studied. We concluded that the incorporation of the CCMH and CCMEA into DPPC liposomes was preferentially located in the hydrophobic core of DPPC bilayers compared to the other three fractions CCMM, CCMB and CCMA. These results suggest that certain substances in CCMH and CCMEA fractions might have biologically significant effects on the fluidity of biological membrane.

  • Gas explosion characteristics of hydrogen and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) were measured in 6L cylindrical vessel, and experiment for explosion to fire transition phenomena of the gases were carried out using the 270L vessel. Explosion characteristics were measured using the stain type pressure transducer and explosion to fire transition phenomena was analyzed with the hish-speed camera. Base on the experiment, it was found that explosion pressure was most high slightly above the stoichiometric concentration, and explosion pressure rise rate and flame propagation velocity were proportional to the combustion velocity. And we find that those kind of explosion characteristics affect the explosion-to-fire transition, in addition, explosion flame temperature, flame residence time, are important parameters in explosion-to-fire transition.

  • With the development of the chemical industry, the chemical accident is increasing every year, thereby increasing the risk of accidents caused by chemicals. The Ministry of Environment provides the criteria for determining shelter-in-place or outdoor evacuation by material, duration of accident, and distance from the toxic substance leak. However, it is hard to say that the criteria for determining the transition point are not clear. Transition point mean the time that evacuation method is switched from shelter-in-place to outdoor evacuation. So, the purpose of this study was to calculate appropriate transition point by comparing the cumulative toxic load. Namdong-gu in Incheon Metropolitan City was finally selected as the target area, considering the current status of the population of Incheon Metropolitan City in 2016 and the statistical survey of chemicals in 2016. The target materials were HCl, HF, and NH3. Modeling was simulated by ALOHA and performed assuming that the entire amount would be leaked for 10 min. Residents' evacuation scenarios were assumed to be shelter-in-place, immediate outdoor evacuation, and outdoor evacuation at an appropriate time after shelter-in-place. Based on the above method, the appropriate transition point from residents located in A(800 m away), B(1,200 m away), C(1,400 m away) and D(2,200 m away) was identified. In HCl, appropriate transition point was after 15 min, after 16 min, after 17 min, after 20 min in order by A, B, C and D. In HF, appropriate transition point was before 1 min or after 16 min, before 4 min or after 19 min, before 5 min or after 20 min, before 14 min or after 26 min in order by A, B, C and D. In NH3, appropriate transition point at A was before 4 min or after 16. Others are not in chemical cloud. This study confirmed the transition point to minimize the cumulative toxic load can be obtained by quantitative method. Through this, it might be possible to select evacuation method quantitatively that cumulative toxic load are minimal. In addition, if the shelter-in-place is maintained without transition to outdoor evacuation, the cumulative toxic load will increase more than outdoor evacuation. Therefore, it was confirmed that actions to reduce the concentration of chemicals in the room were necessary, such as conducting ventilation after the chemical cloud passed through the site.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physical and thermal properties of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan (${\kappa}$-car) gel added whey protein isolate (WPI) as a cryoprotectant. The concentration of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan was fixed at 0.2 wt%. The mean ice crystal size of the WPI/${\kappa}$-car was decreased according to increasing whey protein isolate concentration. The temperature of gel-sol (Tg-s) and sol-gel (Ts-g) transition of WPI/${\kappa}$-car maxtrix was represented in the order of 3.0, 0.2, 5.0 and 1.0 wt%. In addition, the transition temperature of gel-sol of WPI in sucrose solution were showed in order of 1.0, 5.0, 0.2 and 3.0 wt% depending on whey protein isolate concentration. The shape of ice crystal was divided largely into two types, round and rectangular form. 1.0 wt% WPI/${\kappa}$-car matrix at pH 7 and 9 showed minute and rectangular formation of ice crystals and whey protein isolate in sucrose solution at a concentration of 1.0 wt% WPI/${\kappa}$-car matrix at pH 3 and 5 showed relatively large size and round ice crystals. The ice recrystallization characteristics and cryprotective effect of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan changed through the addition of different concentrations of whey protein isolate. It seems that the conformational changes induced interactions between whey protein isolate and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan affected ice recrystallization.

  • We divided the downstream of South-Han River into three water zones, such as river zone, transition zone and lacustrine zone depending on the flow rate, and elucidated the major effect factors on the growth of phytoplankton and the sources of organic matters in each water zone. The difference of chlorophyll-a concentration which represents the standing crop of phytoplankton was statistically significant among the water zones. From the results of bivariate correlation analysis between chlorophyll-a concentration and water quality parameters in each water zone, the outflow of Chungju dam and hydraulic retention time of Lake Paldang which are directly related with the flow rate seemed to have obvious impact on phytoplankton growth in the downstream of South-Han River. The concentration of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen exceeded the criterion of eutrophication and did not showed significant relationship with chlorophyll-a concentration. There were strong correlations between $BOD_5$ and chlorophyll-a concentrations in transition and lacustrine zone showing autochthonous production of phytoplankton was dominant source of organic matters in these zones especially in dry seasons. The results of this study show that the control of abundance of phytoplankton is the key target for reduction of the organic pollution in the downstream of South-Han River.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of body condition score (BCS) at calving on the metabolic status of female Murrah buffaloes in the transition period. Methods: Thirty-seven pregnant buffaloes (multiparous) were selected and monitored during the transition period based on their body condition score and on the estimated calving date. Two groups were formed: i) buffaloes with a BCS>3.5 (n = 17); this group was classified and named 'high BCS at calving' (HBCS); and ii) buffaloes with a $BCS{\leq}3.5$ (n = 20); this group was classified and named 'low BCS at calving' (LBCS). All animals were monitored during the last 30 days of pregnancy and the first 70 days post-calving and kept in the same environment and under the same feeding and management conditions. Mean values for BCS at calving were $2.98{\pm}0.9$ (mean${\pm}$standard error of the mean [SEM]) and $4.21{\pm}0.9$ (mean${\pm}$SEM) for the HBCS and LBCS groups, respectively. Results: The HBCS group showed higher milk fat content (p = 0.007) and milk fat yield (p = 0.027) and a higher concentration of milk urea nitrogen (p = 0.001) than LBCS buffaloes, which in turn had a lower urine pH value (p = 0.033) than HBCS buffaloes in the pre-calving period (7.86 for HBCS vs 7.76 for LBCS). The HBCS animals had a higher concentration of erythrocytes (p = 0.001) and hematocrit (p = 0.012) post-calving and a higher hemoglobin concentration (p = 0.004) pre-calving. Conclusion: Buffaloes during the transition period exhibited some variations in the oxidative stress related to their metabolic status. After calving, buffaloes with a high BCS at calving and greater lipid mobilization have a more marked alteration in oxidative status, but improved production performance.

  • Multi core-shell composite particles were prepared by the water-born emulsion polymerization of various core monomer such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), and shell monomer such as MMA, BMA, stylene (St), 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of different concentration of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the measured conversion, particle size and distribution, average molecular weight, molecular structure, glass transition temperature with DSC, morphology, tensile strength and elongation. In the case of the concentration of 0.02 wt% SDBS, the conversion of MMA core-(BMA/St/AA) shell composite particle was excellent as 98%. In the case of the concentration of 0.03 wt% SDBS, the particle size of BMA core-(MMA/St/AA) shell composite particle was high as $0.47{\mu}m$. We confirmed that 3 points of glass transition temperatures appear for multi core-shell composite particles compared to 2 points of glass transition temperatures appear for general core-shell composite particles. We showed that it is possible to adjust glass transition temperatures according to the kind and composition of the inner shell monomer that it is can be used as a adhesive binder material with improved adhesive power.

  • Hydride-dehydride process for efficient recycling of tantalum (Ta) is used for manufacturer of Ta powder. In case of metal powder, Impurities as like nitride, oxygen, hydrogen is decreased of physical properties. For manufacture of Ta powder, control of theses impurities is important. In this study, to decreased of impurities on Ta powder using HDH process optimize dehydride condition. Dehydration behavior of Ta is depended on temperature, time, and atmosphere. Phase transition of Ta hydride is analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Concentration of hydrogen is decreased with temperature increased. At high temperature, concentration of hydrogen in Ta is similar according to time increased. Size and morphology of powder is not observed after dehydride. Ta powder, which is less than 20 um, concentration of hydrogen under 800 ppm is obtain.
