  • DO concentration in the aquatic system is important for the water quality management perspective. Water quality model uses available reaeration coefficient (K2) estimation equations in calculating DO, however, they might include inevitable uncertainty that the model output can be less reliable. In this study, the calibrated QUAL2E model for the Passaic River in New Jersey, U.S., was used to examine the effect of K2 estimation equation on the output DO concentration of the river. The model was run with six commonly used equations separately with all the other conditions remained same. The result showed that the output DO concentration profiles varied widely with different equations, and maximum difference was 4.96 mg/L for the same location which is unacceptably large. It implies that the development of reliable equation is required for proper water quality management. The unreliable model output can lead to a wrong decision in water quality management such as unnecessarily high or too low treatment of wastewater, which will cause serious effect on the community economically and socially in either case. Generating more reliable model output with slight investment to develop a site specific K$_2$ equation can improve the decision making process significantly and is highly recommended.

  • Dispersion experiment using SF$_{6}$ tracer was performed in the flat field of Chunchon Basin during four nights from August 29 to September 2, 1991. The purpose of this study is to analyze toe horizontal distribution of tracer concentration under the strong stable conditions and to evaluate the results calculated by INPUFF model. Incase of high wind speed, plume spread of SF$_{6}$ concentration appeared in narrow area of the downwind and the standard deviation of the horizontal wind angle (.sigma.$_{a}$) was amall. However, the SF$_{6}$ was spread widely in cases of low wind speed because of the large .sigma.$_{a}$. The result of the INPUFF model was similar to the observed distribution of the SF$_{6}$ concentration. It is proved that the Gaussian puff model is useful when wind direction varies significantly.tly.tly.tly.

  • A daily newspaper in Korea addressed an controversial issue recently that the concentration of radon measured from the groundwater in Taejon was found out a relatively high level. The cancer risk arising from ingestion of such radon should be derived from calculation of the dose absorbed by the tissues at risk. The study performed by the National Research Council in United States confirmed that the use of a PBPK model for the ingested radon could provide the useful information regarding the distribution of radon among the organs of the body. This study presents an approach for the internal dose assessment of ingested radon for this case. At first, the study develops a PBPK model for ingested radon. However, the important issue is how to simulate a more realistic situation using the model associated with repeated oral doses rather than a single oral dose. The simulations are performed for repeated oral exposures per 8-hour interval using the PBPK model for a male adult. The concentration and cumulative value of radon concentration are calculated and analyzed for lung tissue and adipose group, respectively. The results could be used for the realistic prediction of the internal dose of radon in the human body for repeated oral exposures.

  • To support daily ground-level $O_3$ forecasting in Seoul, a transfer function model(TFM) has been developed by using surface meteorological data and pollutant data(previous-day [$O_3$] and [$NO_2$]) from 1 May to 31 August in 1997. The forecast performance of the TFM was evaluated by statistical comparison with $O_3$ concentration observed during September it is shown that correlation coefficient(R), root mean squared error(RMSE), normalized mean squared error(NMSE) and mean relative error(MRE) were 0.73, 15.64, 0.006 and 0.101, respectively. The TFM appeared to have some difficulty forecasting very high $O_3$ concentrations. To compare with this model, multiple regression model(MRM) was developed for the same period. According to statistical comparison between the TFM and MRM. two models had similar predictive capability but TFM based on $O_3$ concentration higher than 60 ppb provided more accurate forecast than MRM. It was concluded that statistical model based on TFM can be useful for improving the accuracy of local $O_3$ forecast.

  • Purpose: Indoor air quality in residential buildings needs to be evaluated over the long term. In previous research, there has been an attempt to perform the health risk assessment of pollutants by using numerical models as a method of long-term evaluation. However, the numerical model of this precedent study has limitations that do not reflect the actual concentration distribution. Therefore, this study introduces the CRPS index, constructs a numerical model that can reflect the concentration distribution, and then presents a more accurate health risk assessment method using it. At this time, the pollutants are toluene, which is a typical material released from building materials. Method: CRPS index was applied to existing numerical model to reflect concentration distribution. This was used to calculate concentrations at adult breathing area and to use them for exposure assessment in a health risk assessment. After that, we entered adult data and conducted a health risk assessment of toluene. Results: The non-carcinogenic risk of toluene was calculated to be 0.0060. This is 5% smaller than the existing numerical model, meaning that it is more accurate to predict the pollutant risks. This value is also lower than the US EPA reference value of 1. Therefore, under the conditions of this study, long-term exposure of adults to toluene has no impact on health.

  • A reinforcement corrosion prediction model was proposed using the results from accelerated testing and mathematical equation from the Fick's 2nd law for chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement in concrete. The input data included the chloride concentration, mix characteristics of concrete, and environmental conditions. This model can be used to predict the chloride concentration pertaining to corrosion time and loading age for marine concrete structures. This model can also be used to predict the service life.

  • In this study, we used photoelastic coating method which is a kind of model test for examining the stress condition of rock masses around underground structures. Using this method, we could know adaptability and usefulness of photoelastic coating method for various shape of tunnel models. And, in spite of higher cross section efficiency, square shape model showed unstable status because of high stress concentration. So, we cut the slits at the each corner of tunnel, and we could make more stable stress condition by means of moving high stress concentration to rock mass.

  • Closed form solution of nonlinear 2-DEG concentration formula is proposed. This allows us to model continuous 2-DEG charge concentration as the function of gate voltage covering subthreshold region of the I-V curves. Comparisons of the Ids-Vgs characteristics and transconductance with the measured data were performed to show the accuracy of the proposed model. This way we have completely closed form I-V characteristics in subthreshold, triode and saturation region incorporating accurate charge control mechanism for HEMTs.

  • This research, sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Environment in 2014, was the first epidemiological study in Korea that investigated the health impact assessment of radon exposure. Its purpose was to construct a model that calculated the annual mean cumulative radon exposure concentrations, so that reliable conclusions could be drawn from environment-control group research. Radon causes chronic lung cancer. Therefore, the long-term measurement of radon exposure concentration, over one year, is needed in order to develop a health impact assessment for radon. Hence, based on the seasonal correction model suggested by Pinel et al.(1995), a predictive model of annual mean radon concentration was developed using the year-long seasonal measurement data from the National Institute of Environmental Research, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, the Hanyang University Outdoor Radon Concentration Observatory, and the results from a 3-month (one season) survey, which is the official test method for radon measurement designated by the Korean Ministry of Environment. In addition, a model for evaluating the effective annual dose for radon was developed, using dosimetric methods. The model took into account the predictive model for annual mean radon concentrations and the activity characteristics of the residents.

  • For the development of a model to predict absorbed salt quantity in radish during salting, absorbed salt quantity and water content change in radish by the hour were measured at 5%, 10%, 15% brine concentration and $10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;30^{\circ}C$ respectively. Absorbed salt quantity in radish by the time showed logarithmic function, absorbed salt quantity by brine concentration and temperature showed linear relation. A model to predict absorbed salt quantity in radish at each time, brine concentration and temperature was calculated by the regression program of SPSS. Apparent diffusivity of salt in radish was calculated from appropriated diffusion equation solution of Fick's second law using computer simulation. Salt diffusivity in radish increased as brine concentration increased and the effect of temperature could by expressed by Arrhenius equation. A model equation which could predict salt diffusivity was developed by regression analysis. To specify relation between salt quantity which absorbed into radish and water content which removed out of it, Flux ratio(${\Delta}W/{\Delta}S$) was calcuated. The values showed that the removed water content was greater than the absorbed salt quantity.
