RHEOLOGICAL CONSISTENCY OF CONCENTRATED WATER-IN-OIL EMULSION

  • We have studied a relationship between the pattern of complex modulus change versus internal phase volume ratio and the rheological consistency of concentrated W/O emulsions with Magnesium Sulfate in the range 0.0 to 0.5 wt% and with different oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency with time of concentrated W/O emulsion was checked using Fudoh Rheometer and the coalescence of deformed water droplets was examined using polarized light microscope(LEICA DMRP). To find the pattern of complex modulus change of the concentrated emulsions versus internal phase volume ratio, the effect of varying water phase volume fraction from 0.78 up to 0.85 on viscoelastic measurements was investigated using rotational rheometer (HAAKE Rheostress RS 50). The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of complex modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. And the pattern of complex modulus increase versus volume ratio has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion.

Volatile Flavor Components in Concentrated Peach Pulp (농축 복숭아 펄프의 휘발성 향기성분)

  • A serum-pulp method was applied to concentrate peach pulp with aroma recovery. The serum portion was concentrated to five-fold at $50{\sim}55^{\circ}C$ and $30{\sim}50$ mmHg with aroma recovery. The concentrated serum, insoluble pulp and aroma fraction were recombined to make a two-fold concentrated peach pulp. The results of GC and GC/MS analysis for volatile compounds and sensory evaluation of concentrated peach pulp indicated that flavor quality was significantly improved by addition of aroma fractions. A 10% aroma recovery appeared to be appropriate for peach pulp.

  • The characteristics of fluid-elastic instability and effects of turbulent excitations for the KSNP steam generator tubes were investigated numerically. The information for the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator has been obtained by using the ATHOS3-MOD1 code and the flow-induced vibration(FIV) analysis has been conducted by using the PIAT(program for Integrity assessment of SG tube) code. The KSNP steam generator has the concentrated plugging zone at the vicinity of the stay cylinder inside the SG. To investigate the cause of the concentrated tube plugging zone, the FIV analysis has been performed for various column and row number of the steam generator tubes. From the results of FIV analysis the stability ratio due to the fluid-elastic instability and vibrational amplitude due to the turbulent excitation in the concentrated plugged zone have a trend of larger values than those of the outer concentrated tube Plugging zone.

Effects of Compost Leachate and Concentrated Slurry on the Growth and Yield of Pepper in a Substrate Hydroponic Culture (퇴비단 여과액비와 막분리 농축액비를 이용한 고형배지경 양액재배가 고추의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of compost leachate and concentrated pig slurry on growth of pepper in substrate hyrdoponic culture. In process of composting, compost leachate was was through a saturated compost heap. Pig slurry was filtered by ultra filtration and concentrated by reverse osmosis process. The pig slurry was mixed with chemical nutrient solution and byproduct based on nitrogen content. Peppers were grown in the seven different hydroponic solutions; compost leachate (CL), concentrated pig slurry (CS), compost leachate + byproduct (CL+BP), concentrated pig slurry + byproduct (CS+BP), compost leachate 50% + nutrient solution 50% (CL+NS), concentrated pig slurry 50% + nutrient solution 50% (CS+NS) and chemical nutrient solution for pepper. The chemical nutrient solution was the standard solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of pepper. The concentration of nutrient solution was adjusted $1.6{\sim}2.0mS/cm$ in EC. The compost leachate and concentrated pig slurry were low in phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), but rich in potassium (K). Growth characteristics as affected by the different nutrient solution were significantly different. Growth and fruit characteristics treated with CL 50+NS 50%CS and 50+NS 50% were similar with NS 100% control plot. The dry weight of stem and leaf were 107.4, 104.2g in plot of NS 100% and CS 50%+NS 50%, respectively. The fruit of pepper showed lowest in the plot treated with 100% concentrated pig slurry, and the growth of pepper severely decreased after application of 100% CS treatment. The yield of pepper was not significantly different between the plots treated with mixture of CS50 + NS50% and 100% nutrient solution treatment. Fruit yield of the compost leachate concentrated pig slurry plot were 59, 14% compared to control, repectively. In conclusion, the mixture solution of 50% of pig slurry and 50% of nutrient solution could be used as a nutrition solution of pepper in hydroponic culture.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional characteristics of selected soybeans grown in Korea to isolate concentrated proteins. Examination of the general characteristics revealed that the pH and apparent density of Phaseolus radiatus L. protein and concentrated Vigna angularis protein were significantly higher than those of other concentrated soy proteins. The water absorption capacity was high for concentrated Pisum sativum L. protein, whereas the oil absorption capacity was high for concentrated Glycine max (L.) Merr. protein. The emulsifying activity and emulsifying stability were higher and significantly higher, respectively, for enriched P. radiatus protein. Considering the functional characteristics of concentrated soy protein, its application as a food material in the meat product industry in Korea may be of potential value.

Changes of Browning, Microbiological and Sensory Characteristics of Concentrated Garlic Juices during Storage (마늘 농축액의 저장 중 갈변도, 미생물 및 관능적 특성의 변화)

  • The juice of garlic (Euichun variety) was extracted and concentrated by heating at 90$^{\circ}C$, by using a rotary vacuum evaporator at 45$^{\circ}C$, or by freezing at -50$^{\circ}C$ until the volume was reduced to 70% of the original's. The concentrated garlic juice was packed into 15 ml test tubes wrapped with aluminum foil and kept at 4$^{\circ}C$ or 25$^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. Changes of browning, microbiological and sensory characteristics of the concentrated garlic juices were monitored every 10 days. The specific gravity and viscosity of the prepared juices decreased in the juices concentrated at 90$^{\circ}C$, 45$^{\circ}C$ and -50$^{\circ}C$ in order. Browning of the concentrated garlic juices was slower during the storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ than at 25$^{\circ}C$. Browning occurred rapidly in the juice concentrated at 45$^{\circ}C$ during the storage, especially at 25$^{\circ}C$. The numbers of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria in the juices did not increase significantly during the storage, which means the garlic juices had good shelf-life. The CFUs/ml of garlic juice concentrated at 90$^{\circ}C$ were lower about 1 to 2 log cycles than those in other concentrated juices. The juice concentrated at 90$^{\circ}C$ showed the weakest garlic odor and the strongest cooked odor among the juices. The juice concentrated at -50$^{\circ}C$ had the freshest odor, especially stored at 4$^{\circ}C$, but the juice concentrated at 90$^{\circ}C$ had lowest score in fresh odor. Brown color was dark in the juice concentrated at 45$^{\circ}C$ and green color of all the juices did not change significantly during the storage.

Production of High Hardness Concentrated Seawater Using NF Membrane (나노여과막을 활용한 고경도 농축수 제조)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a process technology to produce high hardness concentrated seawater removing chloride ions but containing useful minerals such as magnesium and calcium in the seawater desalination process. In order to make high hardness concentrated seawater, evaporation system is mostly used recently. Because evaporation system requires a large amount of energy consumption, in this study, it was aimed to produce high hardness concentrated seawater using membrane filtration requiring less energy. Nano filtration membranes were used for the experiments, and different types of high hardness concentrated seawater was produced depending on the membranes' specification, the number of times being concentrated, and pressure. As a result, at between 15bar and 20 bar in pressure, in between the second and the third times of concentration, the experiment result showed the best economic efficiency. By the experiment, production of high hardness concentrated seawater seemed to have a good economic feasibility.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of compost leachate and concentrated slurry on growth of tomato in hydroponic culture. In process of composting, compost leachate was produced water was through a saturated compost heap. The concentrated slurry was produced by filtration and concentration by membrane process. Filtration of pig slurry was necessary to prevent the hose clogging in hydroponics culture. The treatments of this experiment were consisted of seven different liquid fertilizers; compost leachate(CL), concentrated pig slurry (CS), compost leachate+byproduct(CL+BP), concentrated pig slurry+byproduct(CS+BP), compost leachate 50%+nutrient solution50%(CL+NS), concentrated pig slurry 50%+nutrient solution50%(CS+NS) and nutrient solution(NS) for tomato based on nitrogen content. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of tomato. The concentration of nutrient solution was adjusted a range of $1.6{\sim}2.0 mS/cm$ in EC. 1. The compost leachate and concentrated pig slurry were low in phosphorus(P), calcium(Ca), magnesium(Mg), but rich in potassium(K). 2. Plant height, SPAD value of tomato was highest in the plot of CS+NS, intermediate in CL, CS+BP, and lowest in 100% concentrated pig slurry. 3. The tomato yield of compost leachate plot was 91% compared with inorganic nutrient solution. The compost leachate solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato in organic hydroponics. 4. The growth including plant height, SPAD value, fruit number, fruit weight and yield of tomato in the CL 50%+NS 50% was similar in the control. In conclusion, the mixture solution of 50% pig slurry and 50% nutrient solution could be used as a nutrition solution of tomato hydroponic culture.

Study of Hydrotrope Action and Liquid Crystal Behavior of Concentrated Liquid Detergents (농축세정제의 액정 상거동과 하이드로트로프 작용에 대한 연구)

  • Concentrated liquid detergents have 2~3 times higher surfactant contents [35~45% (w/w)] compared to those of normal type detergents. In general, a single surfactant forms a lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) phase when the concentration is in the region of 30~60% (w/w). Whereas the concentrated liquid detergent at about 40% (w/w) concentration in a mixed surfactant system shows an opaque appearance of gel or LC. In order to meet consumer needs and preference for product appearance, we applied hydrotropes and various surfactants systems in concentrated liquid detergents to obtain an opaque gel-phase and also a clear transparent phase at even below zero $^{\circ}C$ temperature. The more effective hydrotropes for making concentrated liquid detergents are 1,6-hexanediol, adipic acid and dipropylene glycol (DPG) which have two hydrophilic groups in both terminated positions. In order to prepare an excellent concentrated liquid detergent, good hydrotropes alongside secondary type surfactants like LAS and SAS were used. The formation of LC phase of concentrated liquid detergents at about 40% (w/w) concentration could be prevented by the use of both hydrotropes and secondary type surfactants. The result indicate that concentrated detergents having excellent low temperature stability and controlled viscosity can be prepared.

Effects of Concentrated Pig Slurry Separated from Membrane Filter and Several Environment-Friendly Agro-Materials Mixtures on the Growth and Yield of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in Hydroponics (막분리 돈분농축액비와 몇가지 친환경농자재의 혼합액이 수경재배에서 상추의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of concentrated pig slurry separated from membrane filter and by environment-friendly agro-materials mixtures on growth of lettuce in hydroponics. The swine waste treatment system having a ultra filtration and a reverse osmosis process was designed in this study. Filtration of pig slurry was necessary to prevent the hose clogging in hydroponics. Primary separation using ultra filter was followed by concentration by RO (Reverse Osmosis). The concentrated pig slurry (CS) was mixed by five different environment-friendly agro-materials mixtures. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of lettuce. The concentration of nutrient solution in hydroponics was adjusted a range of 1.5 mS/cm in EC. The concentrated pig slurry was low in phosphorus(P), suspended solid and heavy matal, but rich in potassium (K). The concentrated slurry was lowest in the growth characteristics of leaf lettuce. And also SPAD value in leaf was reduced in plot treated with concentrated slurry. But the growth of lettuce in the mixtures plot (CS+BM+AA, CS+BM+AA+SW) in hydroponics was significantly high compared to concentrated slurry. The fresh yield of lettuce was 78, 84% that of nutrient solution as 131.9, 142.2g in plot of CS+BM+AA and CS+BM+AA+SW, respectively. Our studies have shown that it is possible to produce organic culture using concentrated slurry and environment-friendly agro-materials mixture, although growth is slower than when using a conventional inorganic hydroponic solution.
