Up-to-date business environment for manufacturers is very complex and rapidly changing. In other words, companies are facing a variety of changes, such as diversifying customer requirements, shortening product life cycles, and switching to small quantity batch production. In this situation, the companies are introducing the concept of JIT (just-in-time) to solve the problem of on-time production and on-time delivery for survival. Though many companies have introduced ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems and MRP (material requirement planning) systems, the performance of these systems seems to fall short of expectations. In this paper, the case study on introducing an APS (advanced planning and scheduling) system based on dispatching rules to a machining company and on finding a method to establish an efficient production schedule is presented. The case company has trouble creating an effective production plan and schedule, even though it is equipped with an MRP-based ERP system. The APS system is applied to CNC (computer numerical control) machines, which are key machines of the case company. The overall progress of this research is as follows. First, we collect and analyze the master data on individual products and processes of the case company in order to build a production scheduling model. Second, we perform a pre-allocation simulation based on dispatching rules in order to calculate the priority of each order. Third, we perform a set of production simulations applying the priority value in order to evaluate production lead time and tardiness of pre-defined dispatching rules. Finally, we select the optimal dispatching rule suitable for work situation of the case company. As a result, an improved production schedule leads to an increase in production and reduced production lead time.
This paper proposes an improved standard genetic algorithm (GA) of making a near optimal schedule for integrated process planning and scheduling problem (IPPS) considering tool flexibility and tool related constraints. Process planning involves the selection of operations and the allocation of resources. Scheduling, meanwhile, determines the sequence order in which operations are executed on each machine. Due to the high degree of complexity, traditionally, a sequential approach has been preferred, which determines process planning firstly and then performs scheduling independently based on the results. The two sub-problems, however, are complicatedly interrelated to each other, so the IPPS tend to solve the two problems simultaneously. Although many studies for IPPS have been conducted in the past, tool flexibility and capacity constraints are rarely considered. Various meta-heuristics, especially GA, have been applied for IPPS, but the performance is yet satisfactory. To improve solution quality against computation time in GA, we adopted three methods. First, we used a random circular queue during generation of an initial population. It can provide sufficient diversity of individuals at the beginning of GA. Second, we adopted an inferior selection to choose the parents for the crossover and mutation operations. It helps to maintain exploitation capability throughout the evolution process. Third, we employed a modification of the hybrid scheduling algorithm to decode the chromosome of the individual into a schedule, which can generate an active and non-delay schedule. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is superior to the current best evolutionary algorithms at most benchmark problems.
Mathematical forecasting models and a practical computer based forecasting system are developed for planning production in a manufacturing and distribution network. The forecasting system works at the highest level of a hierarchical computer-based decision support system consisting of the forecasting system, an aggregate planning system and a shop floor scheduling system. The dynamics of business operations for an actual company have been considered to make this study a unique comprehensive analysis of a real world forecasting problem.
In shipbuilding, the scheduling system is susceptible to sudden changes and thus it turns to be difficult to predict the differences between schedule and production records in advance. A computer-based simulation is commonly utilized to overcome the discrepancies occurred in estimating workloads and resulting processing times. The main drawback of this simulation-based solution is its limited applicability because, in most cases, each shipyard requires specific and customized simulation environment. By standardizing the planning data of the midterm scheduling system, as proposed in this paper, the efficiency of the current simulation model can be enhanced. To present an alternative approach, this paper begins with the analysis of the complex planning data structure of several shipyards and then proceeds to construct a standard data structure based on the neutral format. An interface application is developed for the data transaction and simulation in on-line environment. As a result, a simulation-based production management of shipyards can be achieved by the efficient prediction of planning and scheduling.

A common control model used to implement computer integrated manufacturing(CIM) is based on the hierarchical decomposition of the shop floor activities, in which supervisory controllers are responsible for all the interactions among subordinates. Although the hierarchical control philosophy provides for easy understanding of complex systems, an emerging manufacturing paradigm, agile manufacturing, requires a new control structure necessary to accommodate the rapid development of a shop floor controller. This is what is called CSCW(computer supported cooperative work)-based control or component-based heterarchical control. As computing resources and communication network on the shop floor become increasingly intelligent and powerful, the new control architecture is about to come true in a modern CIM system. In this paper, CSCW-based control is adopted and investigated, in which a controller for a unit of device performs 3 main functions - planning, scheduling and execution. In this paper, attention is paid to a planning function and all the detailed planning activities for CSCW-based shop floor control are identified. Interactions with other functions are also addressed. Generally speaking, planning determines tasks to be scheduled in the future. In other words, planning analyzes process plans and transforms process plans into detailed plans adequate for shop floor control. Planning is also responsible for updating the process plan and identifying/resolving replanning activities whether they come from scheduling or execution.
This paper deals with the development of a software module for production planning and scheduling activities of an existing Flexible Machining and Assembly System (FMAS). The Production Planning Module uses the hierarchical and sequential scheme based on "divide and conquer" philosophy. In this module, routes are determined based on the production order, orders are screened, tools are allocated, and order adjustments are executed according to the allocated tools. The Scheduling Module allocates the resources, determines the task priority and the start and completion times of tasks. Re-scheduling can be done to handle unforeseen situations such as lumpy demands and machine breakdowns. Since all modules are integrated with a central database and they interface independently, it is easy to append new modules or update the existing modules. The result of this study is used for operating the real FMAS consisting of a machining cell with 2 domestic NC machines and a part feeding robot, an assembly cell with a conveyor and 3 robots, an inspection cell, an AGV, an AS/RS, and a central control computer.

Virtual Manufacturing System(VMS) is an integrated computer based model which has physical, logical schema and behavior of real manufacturing system. In this paper, an integrated scheduling system is developed to simulate and control a Virtual Factory. A workflow model is constructed to define and analyze the structure of a VMS. On-line dynamic dispatching system is developed using MultiPass algorithm and scheduling system considering dynamic CAPP is carried out. Integrated scheduling system developed in this paper reduces the discrepancies between virtual model and real manufacturing system, and control of real shop floor is possible.

Although the hierarchical control philosophy provides for easy understanding of complex systems, an emerging manufacturing paradigm, agile manufacturing, requires a new control structure necessary to accommodate the rapid development of a shop floor controller. This is what is called autonomous agent-based heterarchical control. Airport operations are well-known as a bottleneck in the air traffic system, putting growing pressure on the world's busiest airports to schedule arrivals and departures as efficiently as possible. Effective planning and control are essential for increasing airport efficiency and reducing aircraft delays. Many algorithms for controlling the arrival/departure queuing area are handled, considering it as first in first out queues, where any available aircraft can take off regardless of its relative sequence with other aircraft. In the suggested system, this problem was compared to the problem of scheduling n tasks (plane takeoffs and landings) on a multiple machine (runways). The proposed technique decreases delays (via efficient runway allocation or allowing aircraft to be expedited to reach a scheduled time) to enhance runway capacity and decrease delays. The aircraft scheduling problem entails arranging aircraft on available runways and scheduling their landings and departures while considering any operational constraints. The topic of this work is the scheduling of aircraft landings and takeoffs on multiple runways. Each aircraft's takeoff and landing schedules have time windows, as well as minimum separation intervals between landings and takeoffs. We present and evaluate a variety of comprehensive concepts and solutions for scheduling aircraft arrival and departure times, intending to reduce delays relative to scheduled times. When compared to First Come First Serve scheduling algorithm, the suggested strategy is usually successful in reducing the average waiting time and average tardiness while optimizing runway use.
