  • Large dams are a part of the infrastructure of any society, and a huge amount of resources are consumed to build them. Among the various types of dams, the optimum design of concrete gravity dams requires special attention because these types of dams require a huge amount of concrete for their construction. On the other hand, concrete gravity dams are among the structures whose design, regarding the acting forces, geometric parameters, and resistance and stability criteria, has some complexities. In the present study, an optimization methodology is proposed based on Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), and a computer program is developed to perform optimization of concrete gravity dams. The optimum results for 45 concrete gravity dams are studied and regression analyses are performed to obtain some explicit formulas for optimization of the gravity dams. The optimization of concrete gravity dams can be provided easily using the developed formulas, without the need to perform any more optimization process.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a new and efficient optimization algorithm called Jaya for optimum design of steel grillage structure. Constrained size optimization of this type of structure based on the LRFD-AISC is carried out with integer design variables by using cross-sectional area of W-shapes. The objective function of the problem is to find minimum weight of the grillage structure. The maximum stress ratio and the maximum displacement in the inner point of steel grillage structure are taken as the constraint for this optimization problem. To calculate the moment and shear force of the each member and calculate the joint displacement, the finite elements analysis is used. The developed computer program for the analysis and design of grillage structure and the optimization algorithm for Jaya are coded in MATLAB. The results obtained from this study are compared with the previous works for grillage structure. The results show that the Jaya algorithm presented in this study can be effectively used in the optimal design of grillage structures.

  • This paper presents a new stochastic approach for solving combinatorial optimization problems by using a new selection method, i.e. SA-selection, in genetic algorithm (GA). This approach combines GA with simulated annealing (SA) to improve the performance of GA. GA and SA have complementary strengths and weaknesses. While GA explores the search space by means of population of search points, it suffers from poor convergence properties. SA, by contrast, has good convergence properties, but it cannot explore the search space by means of population. However, SA does employ a completely local selection strategy where the current candidate and the new modification are evaluated and compared. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the optimization of a fuzzy controller for balancing an inverted pendulum on a cart is considered.

  • This paper proposes a design method of PID controllers in the framework of a constrained optimization problem. Owing to the popularity for the controller's simplicity and robustness, a great deal of literature concerning PID control design has been published, which can be classified into frequency-based and time-based approaches. However, both approaches have to be considered together for a designed PID control to work well with a guaranteed closed-loop stability. For this purpose, a penalty function is formulated to satisfy both frequency- and time-domain specifications, and is minimized by a recet nonlinear optimization algorithm to attain optimal PID control gains. The proposed method is compared with Wang's and Ho's methods on a suite of example systems. Simulation results show that the PID control tuned by the proposed method improves time-domain performance without deteriorating closed-loop stability.

  • This paper describes an improved Rate-Distortion Optimization Algorithm for JPEG2000. We proposed a new optimal constant setting method and rate allocation method to reduce execution time of the rate control. And we proposed hardware structure of the improved R-D opti. algorithm. Consequently, improved Rate-Distortion Optimization algorithm is faster than conventional rate control scheme in JPEG2000 standard and have nearly same performance.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm based on the non-domination direction information, which can be an alternative among several multiobjective evolutionary algorithms. The new evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm proposed in this paper will not use the conventional recombination or mutation operators but use the non-domination directions, which are extracted from the non-domination relation among the population. And the problems of the modified sharing algorithms are pointed out and a new sharing algorithm sill be proposed to overcome those problems.

  • Generally, the code motion algorithm accomplishes the run-time optimal connected with the computational optimifation and the register overhead This paper proposes a sparse code motion, which considers the code size, in addition to computational optimization and lifetime optimization. The BCM algorithm carries out the optimal code motion computationally and the LCM algorithm reduces the register overhead in a sparse code motion algorithm. A sparse code motion algorithm is optimum algorithm computationally and lifetime because of suppression unnecessary code motion This algorithm improves runtime and efficiency of the program than the previous work through the performance test.

  • This paper introduces a hybrid induction motor control using a genetically optimized pseudo-on-line method. Optimization results from the use of a look-up table based on genetic algorithms to find the global optimum of an unconstrained optimization problem. The approach to induction motor control includes a pseudo-on-line procedure that optimally estimates parameters of a fuzzy PID (FPID) controller. The proposed hybrid genetic fuzzy PID (GFPID) controller is applied to speed control of a 3-phase induction motor and its computer simulation is carried out. Simulation results show that the proposed controller performs better than conventional FPID and PID controllers. The contribution of this paper is the introduction of a high performance hybrid form of induction motor control that makes on-line and real-time control of the drive system possible.

  • The aim of microscopic image restoration is to recover the image by applying the inverse process of degradation, and the results facilitate automated and improved analysis of the image. In this work, we consider the problem of image restoration as a minimization problem of convex cost function, which consists of a least-squares fitting term and regularization terms with non-negative constraints. The finite step method is proposed to solve this constrained convex optimization problem. We demonstrate the convergence of this method. Efficiency and restoration capability of the proposed method were tested and illustrated through numerical experiments.

  • Pulp mold is one of the famous environmental friendly materials, which made from re cycled materials such as old newsprints through the environmental friendly processes. Furthermore, the used pulp mold can be easily recycled and the pulp mold itself is biodegradable. However, the higher cost and some deficiency in physical properties of pulp mold have been considered as issues to be overcome for a substitute for polymeric packaging materials such as EPS (Expandable Polystyrene). The way for the optimization of a pulp mold mill was proposed in this report. The possible reduction of drying energy was calculated by using a computer simulation method, which could Provide the detailed information about mass balance of overall process. The simulated results showed a great possible curtailment of production cost by improving the forming systems, for example, increasing the temperature and the dryness of a wet pulp mold.
