  • Apical surgery for a mandibular molar is still challenging for many reasons. This report describes the applications of computer-guided cortical 'bone-window technique' using piezoelectric saws that prevented any nerve damage in performing endodontic microsurgery of a mandibular molar. A 49-year-old woman presented with gumboil on tooth #36 (previously endodontically treated tooth) and was diagnosed with chronic apical abscess. Periapical lesions were confirmed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Endodontic microsurgery for the mesial and distal roots of tooth #36 was planned. Following the transfer of data of the CBCT images and the scanned cast to an implant surgical planning program, data from both devices were merged. A surgical stent was designed, on the superimposed three-dimensional model, to guide the preparation of a cortical window on the buccal side of tooth #36. Endodontic microsurgery was performed with a printed surgical template. Minimal osteotomy was required and preservation of the buccal cortical plate rendered this endodontic surgery less traumatic. No postoperative complications such as mental nerve damage were reported. Window technique guided by a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture based surgical template can be considerably useful in endodontic microsurgery in complicated cases.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the accuracy of a model made using the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) milling method and 3D printing method and to confirm its applicability as a work model for dental prosthesis production. MATERIALS AND METHODS. First, a natural tooth model (ANA-4, Frasaco, Germany) was scanned using an oral scanner. The obtained scan data were then used as a CAD reference model (CRM), to produce a total of 10 models each, either using the milling method or the 3D printing method. The 20 models were then scanned using a desktop scanner and the CAD test model was formed. The accuracy of the two groups was compared using dedicated software to calculate the root mean square (RMS) value after superimposing CRM and CAD test model (CTM). RESULTS. The RMS value ($152{\pm}52{\mu}m$) of the model manufactured by the milling method was significantly higher than the RMS value ($52{\pm}9{\mu}m$) of the model produced by the 3D printing method. CONCLUSION. The accuracy of the 3D printing method is superior to that of the milling method, but at present, both methods are limited in their application as a work model for prosthesis manufacture.

  • Lower arm for automobile has been made in steel traditionally. Nowadays steel is being substituted fur aluminum to reduce weight of automobile. Widely applied production method of aluminum component has been casting processes or cast/forging processes. But casting or cast/forging processes have limits of application to parts which is required high strength durability like automotive component. In this research, hot forging process has been adopted to produce aluminum lower arm to ensure required mechanical properties. To reduce production cost, 2 pieces with 1 blow process was developed. Optimization and verification of hot forging process for aluminum lower arm was performed by computer aided engineering using finite volume methods.

  • This paper presents a CAD (Computer-Aided Diagnosis) system or detection of breast cancer, which is composed of personal computer, X-ray film scanner, high resolution display and application softwares. There are three major algorithms implemented in the application software. The irst algorithm is the adaptive enhancement of the digitized X-ray mammograms based on the first derivative and the local statistics. The second one is to detect the clustered microcalcifications by using the statistical texture analysis, and the third one is the classification of the clustered microcalcifications as malignant or benign by using the shape analysis. These algorithms were verified by real experiments.

  • Texture information plays an important role in object recognition and classification. To perform an accurate classification, the texture feature used in the classification must be highly discriminative. This paper presents a novel texture descriptor for texture-based image retrieval and its application in Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for Emphysema classification. The texture descriptor is based on the combination of local surrounding neighborhood difference and centralized neighborhood difference and is named as Combined Neighborhood Difference (CND). The local differences of surrounding neighborhood difference and centralized neighborhood difference between pixels are compared and converted into binary codewords. Then binomial factor is assigned to the codewords in order to convert them into high discriminative unique values. The distribution of these unique values is computed and used as the texture feature vectors. The texture classification accuracies using Outex and Brodatz dataset show that CND achieves an average of 92.5%, whereas LBP, LND and Gabor filter achieve 89.3%, 90.7% and 83.6%, respectively. The implementations of CND in the computer-aided diagnosis of Emphysema is also presented in this paper.

  • Strabismus is a non-aligned state;the visual axis of each eye is not directed toward the same direction at the same time. Clinically, the degrees of strabismus are measured by prism cover test, corneal reflex test (Hirschberg test), prism reflex test (Krimsky prism test), But corneal reflex test and prism reflex test is a possibility that errors occur. we suggest a computer-aided diagnosis for strabismus. We made a mobile application to measure angles of strabismus. For 34 patients, we tested our application. The result of comparing between two methods, It showed a difference 7 Prism Diopter(PD). Our application gives strabismus angles just using a camera and a smart device. Therefore, it can reduce the cost and make the diagnosis of strabismus accurate.

  • This paper presents a CAE(Computer Aided Engineering)system for solving electrostatic field problems by means of a small size computer such as a personal computer. The system software operated on the personal computer is composed of a CAD(Computer aided Design), electric field analysis by using FEM(Finite Element Method)and DB(Data Base)of insulating materials. In addition, we discuss an application of the system to analyzing electric field such as parallel plate electrodes with an insulation spacer, which result suggests that the visualization of electric field distribution and tolerance for insulation strength enables us to assure a simplified evaluation of the insulating design.

  • A Korea next-generation high-speed rail system represents a typical example of large- scale multi-disciplinary systems, consisting of subsystems such as train, electrical hardware, electronics, control, Information, communication, civil technology etc. The system design and acquisition data of the large-scale system must be the subject under strict configuration control and management. The system therefore, must be developed using systems engineering that is a efficient and effective methodology to design such a complex system and manage its development. This paper presents the results from a computer-aided systems engineering application to the Korea next generation high-speed railway project. Especially, the focus of the study was on requirement management and PBS management.

  • A computer-aided process planning system for rotationally symmetric deep drawing products has been developed. The application for non-axisymmetric components, however, has been reported yet. Therefore, this study investigates process sequence design in deep drawing process and constructs a computer-aided process planning system for non-axisymmetric motor frame products with elliptical shape. The system developed consists of three modules. The first one os a 3-dimensional modeling module to calculate surface area for non-axisymmetric products. The second one is a blank design module that creates an oval-shaped blank with the identical surface area. The third one is a process planning module based on production rules that play the best important roles in an expert system for manufacturing. The production rules are generated and upgraded by interviewing with field engineers. Especially, drawing coefficient, punch and die radii are considered as main design parameters. The constructed system for elliptical deep drawing products would be very useful to reduce lead time and improve accuracy for production.
