This paper aims to analytically study the effect of loading conditions and confinement type on the mechanical properties of the concrete-steel composite columns under axial compressive loading. The axial loading is applied to the composite columns in the two ways; only on the concrete core, and on the concrete core and steel tube simultaneously, which are called steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, respectively. In addition, the confinement is investigated in the three types of passive, short-term active and long-term active confinement. Nonlinear finite element 3D models for analyzing these columns are developed using the ABAQUS program, and then these models are verified with respect to the recent experimental results reported by the authors on the STCC and CFST columns experiencing active and passive confinements. Axial and lateral stress-strain curves as well as the failure mode for qualitative verification, and compressive strength for quantitative verification are considered. It is found that there is a good consistency between the finite element analysis results and the experimental ones. In addition, a parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of axial loading type, prestressing ratio, concrete compressive strength and steel tube diameter-to-wall thickness ratio on the compressive behavior of the composite columns. Finally, the compressive strength results of CFST specimens obtained via the finite element analysis are compared with the values specified by the international codes and standards including EC4, CSA, ACI-318, and AISC, with the results showing that ACI-318 and AISC underestimate the compressive strength of the composite columns, while EC4 and CSA codes present overestimated values.
The behavior of stocky concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) tubes was studied experimentally and analytically The behavior is focused on the confining action of GRFP tube against concrete. In the experimental work, extensive tensile tests for GFRP tubes which have various fiber lay-out were conducted. And, also short length concrete filled GFRP tubes which have various tube thickness, diameter, and length were tested. In the analytical work, equations to describe the compressive stresses and strains at failure, as well as the entire stress-strain curve of the GFRP tubes were developed. A comparison between the experimental results and those of analytical results indicate that the proposed model provides satisfactory predictions for the compressive strengths, strains at failure, and stress-strain responses.
Open-cell Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al(with gamma/gamma prime microstructure typical of Bi-base super alloys) foams are manufactured by pack-cementation at $1000{\boxplus}$degrees C, followed by homogenization at $1200{\boxplus}C$. The resulting alloyed foams retain the low relative densities (less than 3.5 wt.%). The oxidation behavior of Ni-Cr foams turns out to be identical to that of bulk Ni-Cr alloys, after taking into account the foam's higher surface area. The room-temperature compressive behavior of the Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Al is compared to model predictions. Additionally, the foam creep behavior, measured between 680 and $825{\boxplus}C$ in the stress range of 0.1-0.3 MPa, compared to two analytical models, namely strut compression and strut bending as high-temperature deformation modes.
The welded structure unnecessarily remains residual stress due to the very high heating of local region and lastly cooling. The residual stress sometimes causes fracture initiation of welded structures. In this paper, distribution and magnitude of tensile and compressive residual stresses in the TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welded aluminum alloy such as Al5083-H112 are measured by using the hole-drilling method. Furthermore, the effects of residual stresses in the TIG welded aluminum CCT(Center Crack Tension) and SEN(Single Edge Notched) Specimens on the fatigue crack propagation behavior are analyzed. The fatigue cracks initiated at residual stresses region are influnced by tensile and compressive residual stresses. However, the effects are found to be released fast for both cases according to the cyclic loads and extension of crack length.
Quartz glass are used in semiconductor industries as the reaction furnace, wafer carrier and accessaries. During the process the quartz glass received compression by direct contact with other quartz glass ware and metal as the form of weight itself and vacuum pressure and fatigue by vibrations caused by process. Even as the other ceramic materials quartz glass have high compressive strength but often there happened crack and breakage of quartz glass resulted in a great damage in the process. In this paper investigation will be carried out on fracture behavior of quartz glass under local load to give guideline to prevent unintended fracture of quartz glass.
Appropriate analysis models for concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) subjected to bending moment were determined to assess flexural behavior of CFT member. Applying this model, finite element analyses was performed and compared against experimental data considering the compressive strength of in-filling material and the composite action between tube shell and in-filling core. Analysis results showed that the FE model proposed in this study is feasible for the analytical investigation of the flexural behavior of CFT member according to loading conditions, effect of compressive strength of various core materials and other design parameters.
The purpose of the present study is to propose a realistic method to analyze the prestressed concrete members subjected to pure torsion. The present study device a method to realistically take into account the tensile stiffness of concrete after cracking. The effect of biaxial compressive and tensile loading on the compressive and tensile strength of concrete is also taken into account in the present model. The present model can predict not only the service load behavior, but also up to the behavior of ultimate load stages. The comparison of the present theory with experimental data indicates that the proposed model dipicts reasonably well the actual behavior of prestressed concrete members.
An experimental investigation was conducted to study the behavior of high-strength RC wide beam-column joints with slab subjected to reversed cyclic loads under constant axial load. Six half scale interior wide beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including three specimens without slab and three specimens with slab. The primary variables were compressive strength of concrete($f_ck$=285, 460kgf/$cm^2$), the ratio of the column-to-beam flexural capacity($M_r$=$\Sigma M_c / \Sigma M_b$ ; 0.77 -2.26), extended length of the column concrete($l_d$ ; 0, 12.5, 30cm), ratio of the column-to-beam width(b/H ; 1.54, 1.67). Test results are shown that (1) the behavior of specimen using high-strength concrete satisfied for required minimum ductile capacity according to increase the compressive strength, (2) the current design code and practice for interior joints(type 2) are apply to the wide beam-high strength concrete column.
Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to these mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique, a special experimental apparatus, can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate loading condition. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of the aluminum alloys, Al2024-T4, Al6061-T6 and Al7075-T6, under high strain rate compressive and tensile loading are determined using SHPB technique.
Simulations of the buckling behavior of a single wall carbon nanotube(SWCNT) was carried out using molecular dynamics simulation. Molecular dynamics simulations were done with 1fs of time step. Tersoff's potential function was used as the interatomic potential function since it has been proved to be reliable to describe the C-C bonds in carbon nanotubes. Compressive force was applied by moving the top end of the nanotube at a constant velocity. Buckling behavior under compressive load was observed for (15,15) armchair SWCNTs with 2nm of diameter and 24.9nm of length. Buckling load and critical strain is obtained from the MD simulation. Deformation occurred on the top region of the CNT because of fast downward velocity.
