  • In order to determine the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the mechanical behavior of graphite fiber reinforced composites, the modulus, fracture stress(maximum stress), and fracture strain of graphite/epoxy composites have been determined as a function of pressure. Composite specimens used in this study were 90-deg unidirectional and had a 60% fiber volume fraction. Compressive tests under five different pressure levels were conducted. The result showed the modulus measured from as initial slope of stress-strain curve increased bilinearly with pressure with a break at 200 MPa. It was also found that fracture stress and fracture strain increased in a linear fashion with pressure.

  • It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by a strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressive elastic modulus, fracture stress, and fracture strain of carbon/epoxy composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressive test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 270㎫. Compressive tests were performed applying three strain rates of 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate. The results also showed that the fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1)Compressive residual stress decreases in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2)The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature increases below $\Delta$K=17~19MPa (3)It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compressive residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • In this paper, we investigated the fracture distribution in indium-tin-oxide (ITO) coating with compressive bending stress on polymer. Under compressive strain, the ITO island delaminates, buckles and cracks. As the mechanical compressive stress increases, the buckling width of ITO seems to be increased. These created cracks are related to well-defined distribution of mechanical stress in ITO island-arrays. We related. mechanical bending stress to crack distribution and derived theoretical equation of position-dependent bending stress. And, we verified the bending stress's magnitude to crack distribution observed from optical photographs.

  • Nowadays, many components used in machinery industry is required lightness and high strength. Therefore, the effects of compressive residual stress by shot-peening which is method to improve fatigue lift of spring steel (JISG SUP-9), which used in suspension of automobile, on fatigue crack growth characteristics was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

  • Fracture responses of Al2O3 tubes were investigated for various loading paths under combined tension/torsion. The fracture criterion did not depend on loading paths. Fracture angles agreed well with the maximum tensile stress criterion. As the loading condition approaches a shear dominant state, the tensile principal stress at fracture increases compared to the uniaxial fracture strength. By using the Weibull modulus obtained from tension and torsion tests, the Weibull statistical fracture strengths were compared with experimental data. This comparison suggests that fracture may occur at the surface of the specimen when tensile stress is dominant, but within the volume of the specimen when shear stress is dominant. The Weibull fracture strength increased as the loading conition approached a shear dominant state, but underestimated compared to experimental data. Finally, a new fracture criterion was proposed by including the effect of compressive principal stress. The proposed criterion agreed well with experimental data of Al2O3 tubes not only at combined tension/torsion but also at balanced biaxial tension.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of shot peening on crack growth behavior, crack growth tests are conducted on spring steels and shot peened cracks. The probabilistic crack growth equation, which can represemt the sigmoidal crack growth behavior as recently reported by Kim and Shim, is used to evaluate the experimental results. The results show that fatigue cracks grows slower in the shot peened specimen than in the unpeened and, due to the compressive residual stress occurring on the specimen surface. In the case of the shot peened specimen, the initial stress intensity factor range and the fracture toughness is higher than the non-peened specimen because the compressive residual stress affects crack growth and fracture of the specimen.

  • This paper investigates the mechanisms of tunnel spalling and massive tunnel failures using fracture mechanics principles. The study starts with examining the fracture propagation due to tensile and shear failure mechanisms. It was found that, fundamentally, in rock masses with high compressive stresses, tensile fracture propagation is often a stable process which leads to a gradual failure. Shear fracture propagation tends to be an unstable process. Several real case observations of spalling failures and massive shear failures in boreholes, tunnels and underground roadways are shown in the paper. A number of numerical models were used to investigate the fracture mechanisms and extents in the roof/wall of a deep tunnel and in an underground coal mine roadway. The modelling was done using a unique fracture mechanics code FRACOD which simulates explicitly the fracture initiation and propagation process. The study has demonstrated that both tensile and shear fracturing may occur in the vicinity of an underground opening. Shallow spalling in the tunnel wall is believed to be caused by tensile fracturing from extensional strain although no tensile stress exists there. Massive large scale failure however is most likely to be caused by shear fracturing under high compressive stresses. The observation that tunnel spalling often starts when the hoop stress reaches $0.4^*UCS$ has been explained in this paper by using the extension strain criterion. At this uniaxial compressive stress level, the lateral extensional strain is equivalent to the critical strain under uniaxial tension. Scale effect on UCS commonly believed by many is unlikely the dominant factor in this phenomenon.

  • The size effect of axial compressive strength of concrete in notched specimens was experimentally investigated. Based on the concept of the fracture mechanics and size effect law, theoretical studies for axial compressive failure of concrete were reviewed, and two failure modes of concrete specimen under compression were discussed. In this study, experiment of axial compressive failure, which is one of the two failure modes, was carried out by using double cantilever fracture specimens. By varying the slenderness of cantilevers and the eccentricity of applied loads with respect to the axis of each cantilever, the size effect of axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated, and predicted by Bazant's size effect law. The test results show that size effect appears conspicuously for all series of specimens. For the eccentricity of loads, the influence of tensile and compressive stress at the notch tip are significant and so that the size effect is varied. In other words, if the influence of tensile stress at the notch tip grows up, the size effect of concrete increases. And the fact that the fracture process zone must be sufficiently secured for more accurate experiment was affirmed.
