  • The current design practice of an electric transmission tower is based on the allowable stress design. Design strengths of the electric transmission tower's compression member are determined by buckling the strength of the member itself without considering joint strength. There is a possibility of a joint failure prior to the buckling of a member. Therefore, in this study, joint strength is calculated for various member forces, and the shape of joint and database of strength were established. These data was compared with the member strength obtained from previous research studies based on an equivalent nonlinear analysis technique. Finally, practical evaluation and design method to distinguish failure mode in an electric transmission tower member is proposed.

  • Springs are widely utilized in machine element. To find out stiffness of frustum-shaped coil spring, the space beam theory using the finite element method is adopted in this paper. In three dimensional space, a space frame element is a straight bar of uniform cross section which is capable of resisting axial forces, bending moments about two principal axes in the plane of its cross section and twisting moment about its centroidal axis. The corresponding displacement degrees of freedom are twelve. To find out load vector of coil spring subjected to distributed compression. principle of virtual work is adapted. And this theory was programming using MATLAB software. To compare FEM using MATLAB software was applied MSC. Nastran software. The geometry model for MSC. Patran was produced by 3-D design modeling software. Finite element model was produced by MSC. Patran. Finite element was applied tetra (CTETRA) having 10 node. The analysis results of the MATLAB and MSC. Nastran are fairly well agreed with those of various experiments. Using MATLAB program proposed in this paper and MSC. Nastran, spring constants and stresses can be predicted by input of few factors.

  • This study explains the effects of lubricant and surface treatment on hot forging die life. The mechanical and thermal load, and thermal softening which is happened by the high temperature of die, in hot and warm forging, cause die wear, heat checking and plastic deformation, etc. This study is fur the effects of solid lubricants and surface treatment condition for hot forging die. Because cooling effect and low friction are essential to the long life of dies, optimal surface treatment and lubricant are very important to improve die life for hot forging process. The main factors, which affect die hardness and heat transfer, are surface treatments and lubricants, which are related to thermal diffusion coefficient and heat transfer coefficient, etc. For verifying these effects, experiments are performed for hot ring compression test and heat transfer coefficient in various conditions as like different initial billet temperatures and different loads. The effects of lubricant and surface treatment for hot forging die life are explained by their thermal characteristics. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • Bovine incisor was investigated using active infrared thermography(IRT) to visualize crack on bovine teeth. An artificial crack was carefully created in bovine incisor sample by compression load of universal tensile machine. While applying a sinusoidal heat wave to the cracked bovine incisor through halogen lamp, consecutive digital infrared images was captured from the sample surface at a frequency synchronized with heat excitation. Phase information of thermal image was calculated by four-point correlation method and processed to produce the phase image of bovine incisor. This phase image showed clearly the crack on the incisor, which was hardly detected in traditional passive thermography.

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wears of piston and piston rings were investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder, four cycle, indirect injection diesel engine operating at an engine load of 75% and an engine speed of 1600 rpm. For the purpose of comparison between the wear rates of two cylinders with and without EGR, the recirculated exhaust gas was sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot contenets in exhaust emissions were removed by an intentionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diameter), while only the fresh air was inhaled into the other cylinder. These experiments were carried out on the fuel injection timing fixed at 15.3$^{\circ}$ BTDC. It was found that the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR increased a little bit, but the piston head diameter increased, rather than decreased, owing to soot adhesion and erosion wear, and especially larger with EGR, and that the wear rates of the top and second piston ring(compression ring)thickness with EGR were more than twice the wear rate of top ring in case of no EGR, but the wear rate of oil rings thickness without EGR increased greater than that with EGR.

  • This paper is to investigate collapse mechanisms of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)composite tubes and to evaluate collapse characteristics on the change of interlaiminar number and ply orientation angle of outer under static and impact axial compression loads. When a CFRP composite tube is crushed, static/impact energy is consumed by friction between the loading plate and the splayed fronds of the tube, by fracture of the fibers, matrix and their interface. These are associated with the energy absorption capability. In general, CFRP tube with 6 interlaminar number(C-type), absorbed more energy than other tubes(A, B, D-types). The maximum collapse load seemed to increase as the interlaminar number of such tubes increases. The collapse mode depended upon orientation angle of outer of CFRP tubes and loading status(static/impact). Typical collapse modes of CFRP tubes are wedge collapse mode, splaying collapse mode and fragmentation collapse mode. The wedge collapse mode was shown in case of CFRP tubes with 0° orientation angle of outer under static and impact loadings. The splaying collapse mode was shown in only case of CFRP tubes with 90°orientation angle of outer under static loadings, however in Impact tests those were collapsed in fragmentation mode .

  • The horizontal compression test of some selected corrugated fiberboards was performed to determine the cushioning properties of them. Creep behavior of the corrugated fiberboard boxes, which have been widely used in rural area for packaging fruits and vegetables, was tested. The flute crushing stress of the corrugated fiberboard depended upon mainly the basic weight of the corrugated medium, comparing with the combined basic weight of corrugated fiberboard. When moisture content of the corrugated fiberboards was increased about 8% (d.b.), the flute crushing stress of them was decreased at the rate of 44%~64%. The cushion factor of the sample fiberboards showed much higher value at the lower moisture content of them. These trends appeared to be more obvious at the lower applied stress levels. Also, the cushion factors of the double wall corrugated fiberboards(DW) were observed to be little higher than those of the single wall corrugated fiberboards(SW). The creep behavior of the sample boxes was found to be highly moisture and static load dependent. The creep behavior of the corrugated fiberboard boxes could be well analyzed by the asymptotic slope derived from the creep model.

  • Pile foundations constructed by the fiber reinforced polymer plastic piles have been used in coastal and oceanic regions in many countries. Generally, fiber reinforced polymer plastic piles are consisted of filament winding FRP which is used to wrap the outside of concrete pile to increase the axial load carrying capacity or pultruded FRP which is located in the core concrete to resist the bending moment arising due to eccentric loading. In this paper, the analytical procedures of hybrid concrete filled FRP tube flexural members are suggested based on the CFT design method. Moreover, the analytical results are compared with the experimental results to obtained by the previous researches. The results of comparison analyses are performed to estimate the accuracy of the analytical procedure for hybrid FRP-concrete composite compression test, members under eccentrical loading.

  • Cyclic test of the columns is of practical relevance to the performance of compression members during an earthquake loading. The strength, ductility and energy absorption capabilities of reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to cyclic loading have been estimated by many researchers. These characteristics are not normally inherent in plain concrete but can be achieved by effectively confining columns through transverse reinforcement. An extensive experimental program, in which performance of four RC columns detailed according to provisions of ACI-318-08 was studied in contrast with that of four columns confined by a new proposed technique. This paper presents performance of columns reinforced by standard detailing and cast with 25 and 32 MPa concrete. The experimentally achieved load-displacement hysteresis and backbone curves of two columns are presented. The two approaches which work in conjunction with Response 2000 have been suggested to draw analytical back bone curves of RC columns. The experimental and analytical backbone curves are found in good agreement. This investigation gives a detail insight of the response of RC columns subjected to cyclic loads during their service life. The suggested analytical procedures will be available to the engineers involved in design to appraise the capacity of RC columns.

  • Actuators using shape memory alloys use the one-way shape recovery stress. But when external load is applied the accumulated plastic strain induced by repeated deformation is the factor of generation of uncorrect recovery stress and unreliability. To solve this problem, two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) is considered. TWSME induced by plastic deformation have advantages including simple heating cycle without external force and enough recovery force for using actuators. but there is no research on cylinder-type or tube-type shape memory alloy actuators using two-way shape memory effect until now. Therefore in this study, characteristics of two-way shape memory effect is verified through the compression experiments using cylinder-type and tube-type specimens.
