  • This study was attempted to investigate the changes of specific fuel consumption, compression pressure and power output, consequently to obtain basic data on farm kerosene engine. The samples which are used in this study are a 4 cycle water cooled korosene engine for the use of K6-CT83 power tiller and a 4 cycle air-cooled kerosene engine for the use of G5L-3A water pump. The Korean Industrial Standards (K.S)KS-B 6002 "Test code of small internal combustion engine" was referred in carrying out this study, and its results are as follows. 1. According to load increasing, the speific fuel consumption of the engines generally decreases, however, in case of 10% over-loading it increases. 2. As a result of full load consecutive operation, according to passing of operating time, the amount of wear generally increases, consequently the speific fuel consumption also increases, and inversly the compression pressure decreases. 3. The changes of specific fuel consumption and compression pressure were closely related with time of piston ring exchange, and periodically about 100 hours the engines show the increase of specific fuel consumption and the decrease of compression pressure. 4. After about 300 hours, although the engine had new piston rings, the specific fuel consumption increase, consequently the engine needs boring. In actual use, it is impossible to operate consecutively on full load, therefore the boring time of engine is expected to come later.

  • Purpose: Compression of the ulnar nerve in the ulnar tunnel is a relatively uncommon condition. Many authors have described several etiologies of ulnar nerve compression. We experienced two cases of ulnar nerve compression in the ulnar tunnel due to an anomalous pulsatile S - shaped ulnar artery. Methods: Case 1: A 51 - year - old man was referred with numbness and paroxysmal tingling sensation along the volar side of the ring and little fingers of his right hand for 6 months. When exploration, the ulnar artery was pulsatile S - shaped and was impinging on the ulnar nerve. To decompress the ulnar nerve, the tortuous ulnar artery was mobilized and translocated radially onto the adjacent fibrous tissue. Case 2: A 41 - year - old man was referred with tingling sensation on the 4 th, 5 th finger of the right hand for 4 months. Sensory nerve conduction velocities of the ulnar nerve was delayed. Preoperative 3D angio CT scan showed an anomalous S - shaped ulnar artery. Same operation was done. Results: The postoperative course was uneventful. After decompression, paroxysmal tingling sensation decreased to less than 1 minute per episode, occurring 1 - 2 times a day. After 4 months, they had no more episodes of numbness and tingling sensation. Examination demonstrated good sensation to pinprick and touch on the ulnar aspect of the hand. Conclusion: We report two cases of ulnar nerve compressive neuropathy that was caused by an anomalous pulsatile S - shaped ulnar artery in the ulnar tunnel. Although this is an unusual cause of ulnar nerve compression, the symptoms will not spontaneously resolve. The prompt relief of compressive neuropathic symptoms following the translocation of the impinging ulnar artery from the affected ulnar nerve onto adjacent tissue proved that the ulnar nerve compression is due to the anomalous vessel.

  • The stress behavior analysis of a-rings and packing for a LPG filling unit has been presented using a finite element analysis technique by non-linear MSC/MARC program. The sealing performance and endurance of a-rings and packing are affected by working conditions such as filling pressure, friction coefficient, compression ratio, and material properties. The elastomeric polymers of O-rings and packing are nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which are selected as proper materials of a-rings and packing based on the stress analysis results. The calculated FEM results showed that the proper material of O-ring is NBR as a secondary sealing component and the recommended material of packing is PTFE as a primary sealing unit during a LPG filling process.

  • Friction forces of piston rings for a typical SI engine were independently measured while excluding the effects of cylinder pressure, oil starvation and piston secondary motion using a floating liner system. Friction patterns, represented by the measured friction forces, were classified into five frictional modes with regard to the combination of predominant lubrication regimes(boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication) and stroke regions(mid-stroke and dead centers). The modes were identified on the Stribeck diagram of the dimensionless bearing parameter and friction coefficients which were evaluated at the mid-stroke and at the dead centers. And the frictional modes were estimated to the full operation range. The compression rings behave in the mode where hydrodynamic lubrication is dominant at the mid-stroke and mixed lubrication is dominant at the dead centers under steady operating conditions. However, the oil control ring behave in the mode where mixed lubrication is dominant throughout the entire stroke.

  • A study of adiabatic shear band formation and propagation of 4340 steel was done using the stepped speciment which was subjected to high velocity impact. The high velocity impact was performed on compression Hopkinson bar impact machine. After the controlled impact, the specimen was prepared for visual inspection. Numerical simulation was also performed with same geometrical dimension using explicit time integration finite element code. Experimental results were then compared with the numerical prediction. It was found that the numerical prediction is quite accurate, average thickness of adiabatic shear band is about $10{\mu}m$, the macro crack around shoulder is due to folding, and the deformation control ring is effective to freeze the propagation of adiabatic shear band.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the physical (Density, Percentage of latewood, Percentage of pore zone, Mean annual ring width) and mechanical (Compressive strength parallel to the grain, Compression perpendicular to the grain, Shearing strength) properties of some major northern softwoods and hardwoods. The physical and mechanical properties of each species are summerized as Table 2 and the relationship between physical and mechanical factors are discussed. The results of this study were as follows: Density and percentage of latewood are closely related to physical and mechanical properties, but percentage of pore zone and mean annual ring width are remotely related to physical and mechanical properties.

  • A novel ultra-narrow linewidth DFB laser in the extended FBG ring cavity having kHz linewidth is presented. The method of linewidth compression was realized by introducing an extended fiber ring cavity into the cavity between the external FBG and the Bragg grating inside a DFB laser diode. Optimum optical feedback control was achieved by using an optical circulator and a variable optical attenuator to prevent mode hopping induced by spatial hole burning. To prove the validity of the proposed scheme, a self-heterodyne measurement set-up with fiber delay line of 63 km was utilized for the ultra-narrow linewidth measurement. A 3 dB linewidth of less than 3 kHz was demonstrated, which is resolution limited performance. This linewidth is equivalent to 3 dB linewidth of 2$\times$10$^{-8}$ nm.

  • Circular cylindrical tubes are widely used in structures such as vehicles and aircraft structures, where light weight and high compressive/bending/torsional load carrying capacity are required. When axially compressed, relatively thick circular cylindrical tubes deform in a so-called ring mode. Each ring develops and completely collapses one by one until the entire length of the tube collapses. During the collapse process the tube absorbs a large amount of energy. Like honey-comb structures, circular cylindrical tubes are light weighted, are capable of high axial compressive load, and absorb a large amount of energy before being completely collapsed. In this report, the subject of axial plastic buckling of circular cylindrical tubes was reviewed first. Then, the axial collapse process of the tubes in a so-called ring mode was studied both experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, steel tubes were axially compressed slowly until they were completely collapsed. Fixed boundary condition was provided. Numerical study involves axisymmetric, elastic-plastic, large deflection, self-contact mechanisms. The measured and calculated results were presented and compared with each other. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the load carrying capacity and the energy absorbing capacity of the tube.

  • In this paper, Sub Harmonic Ring Mixer using Anti-Parallel Diode Pair is studied. Conventional mixers mix LO signal with RF signal and, obtain IF signal from the difference between LO and RF. Sub harmonic ring mixers using APDP mix RF signal with the second harmonic of LO signal, LO frequency needed for conventional receiver is reduced by 1/2.The produced mixer showed 12 dB conversion loss, and 1 dB compression point of IF signal, in respect to RF signal, was found at the 0 dBm RF signal. Isolation LO/IF and LO/RF is 24.6 dB and 22.5 dB respectively. Isolation RF/LO and LO/RF is 32.6 dB and 22.5 dB respectively.
