In this study, a robust controller to control pressure in a pneumatic pressure vessel considering dynamic characteristics of pneumatic transmission line is proposed. Dynamic characteristics of transmission line using compressible fluid is changed by the flowing states of the fluid. So, if the fixed gain controller is designed based on a fixed model, the performance of the control system could be destabilized or degraded. The controller designed in this study is composed of two parts. The one is to reject modelling error based on the disturbance observer, the other is to obtain the control performance. The control results with the designed controller show that the robustness of the control system is achieved regardless of the change of the model of the transmission line. Therefore, the designed controller can be utilized for the performance improvement of the pressure control system using compressible fluid such as air and gas

Characteristics of pressure-drop oscillations(PDO) in a boiling channel were studied numerically and compared with experimental data. Effects of initial and boundary conditions on PDO were investigated in terms of oscillation period and amplitude. The period and amplitude of PDO increased with increasing of the compressible volume in the surge tank and the heat input. PDO occurred within the specific range of the fluid temperature, at which oscillation period and amplitude diminished rapidly with the increase of the fluid temperature. The increase of the loss coefficient in fluid supply line resulted in slightly longer oscillation period and larger amplitude. Numerical results showed good agreement with the experimental data.

Pressure oscillation caused by the compressibility of entrapped air in dam break flow is analyzed using an open source code, which is a two-phase compressible code for non-isothermal immiscible fluids. Since compressible flows are computed based on a pressure-based method, the code can handle the equation of state of barotropic fluid, which is virtually incompressible. The computed time variation of pressure is compared with other experimental and computational results. The present result shows good agreements with other results until the air is entrapped. As the entrapped air bubbles pulsate, pressure oscillations are predicted and the pressure oscillations damp out quickly. Although the compressibility parameter of water has been varied for a wide range, it has no effects on the computed results, because the present equation of state for water is so close to that of incompressible fluid. Grid independency test for computed time variation of pressure shows that all results predict similar period of pressure oscillation and quick damping out of the oscillation, even though the amplitude of pressure oscillation is sensitive to the velocity field at the moment of the entrapping. It is observed that as pressure inside the entrapped air changes quickly, the pressure field in the neighboring water adjusts instantly, because the sound of speed is much higher in water. It is confirmed that the period of pressure oscillation is dominated by the added mass of neighboring water. It is found that the temperature oscillation of the entrapped air is critical to the quick damping out of the oscillations, due to the fact that the time averaged temperature inside the entrapped air is higher than that of surrounding water, which is almost constant.
In the present study, a passive control method, using the porous wall and cavity system, is applied to the shock wave/boundary layer interactions in transonic moist air flow. The two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation, are solved by the third-order MUSCL type TVD finite difference scheme. Baldwind-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the present control method, the total pressure losses of the flow and the time-dependent behaviour of shock motions are analyzed in detail. The computed results show that the present passive control method considerably reduces the total pressure losses due to the shock/boundary layer interaction in transonic moist air flow and suppresses the unsteady shock wave motions over the airfoil, as well. It is also found that the location of the porous ventilation significantly influences the control effectiveness.

Thermo-acoustic waves can be thermally generated in a compressible flow field by rapid heating and cooling, and chemical reaction near the boundary walls. This mechanism is very important in the space environment in which natural convection does not exist. Also this may be a significant factor for heat transfer when the fluids are close to the thermodynamic critical point. In this study, the generation and transmission characteristics of thermo-acoustic waves in an air-filled confined domain with two-step pulsed heating are studied numerically. The governing equations are discretized using control volume method, and are solved using PISO algorithm and second-order upwind scheme. For the purpose of stable solution, time step was set to the order of $1\times10_-9s,\;and\;grids\;are\;50\times2000$. Results show that temperature and pressure distributions of fluid near the boundary wall subjected to a rapid heating are increased abruptly, and the induced thermo-acoustic wave propagates through the fluid until it decays due to viscous and heat dissipation. Pressure waves have sharp front shape and decay with a long tail in the case of step heating, but these waves have sharp pin shape in the case of pulsed heating.
Most multiphase flow simulators following fractional flow approach assume incompressibility of fluid and matrix or consider only two phase flow (water and air, water and NAPL). However, in this study, mathematical governing equations were developed for fully compressible three-phase flow using fractional flow based approach. Also, fully compressible multiphase flow simulator (CMPS) considering compressibilities of matrix and fluid was developed using the mathematical governing equations. In order to verify CMPS, the CMPS were compared with analytical solution and the existing multiphase flow simulator, MPS, which had been developed for simulating incompressible multiphase flow (Suk and Yeh 2007; Suk and Yeh 2008). According to the results, solutions of CMPS and MPS and analytical solutions are well matched each other. Thus, it is found that CMPS has the capability of simulating compressible three phase flow phenomena assuming compressibilities of fluids and matrix.
In this paper, we presented the exact Riemann solver for the air-water two-phase shock tube problems where the strength of the propagated sock wave is moderately weak. The shock tube has a diaphragm in the middle which separates water medium in the left and air medium in the right. By rupturing the diaphragm, various waves such as rarefaction wave, shock wave and contact discontinuity are propagated into water and air. Both fluids are treated as compressible, with the linearized equations of state. We used the isentropic relations for the air and water assuming a weak shock wave. We solved the shock tube problem considering a high pressure in the water and a low pressure in the air. The numerical results cleary showed a left-traveling rarefaction wave in the water, a right-traveling shock wave in the air, and the right-traveling material interface.

This paper addresses characteristics of compressible flow dynamics inside a pipe with an accumulator and an inlet orifice. It also presents a simple but stable numerical method associated with the accumulator-orifice calculation. In particular, a focus is given to developing a method of finding an optimum design of the accumulator-orifice system (i.e., the accumulator size and the throttle resistance) that gives the most effective dissipation of the water-hammering problem. It is found that there exists indeed an optimum set of parameter values for the most effective dissipation of the wave energy.
An analysis based on the narrow groove theory is not suitable for the case of insufficient number of grooves or of non-rectangular shaped grooves. In this study, we present the solution of the compressible Reynolds equation for the air-lubricated hydrodynamic herringbonegrooved journal bearing with circular shaped grooves. From the results calculated numerically, optimal design values are obtained for the herringbone-grooved journal bearing.
