CNG 기관의 수소혼합률 변화에 따른 성능 및 배출가스 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Performance and Emission Characteristics of Hydrogen Mixtures in a CNG Engine)

  • Recently, the world faces the environmental problem such as air pollution due to harmful gas discharged from car and abnormal climate due to the green-house gases increased by the discharge of $CO_2$. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), one of alternative for this problem, is less harmful, compared to the existing fossil fuel, as gaseous fuel, and less carbon in fuel ingredients and carbon dioxide generation rate relatively favorable more than the existing fuel. However, CNG fuel has the weakness of slow flame propagation speed and difficult fast burn. On the other hand, hydrogen does not include carbon in fuel ingredients, and does not discharge harmful gas such as CO and HC. Moreover, it has strength of quick burning velocity and ignition is possible with small ignition energy source and it's has wide Lean Flammability Limit. If using this hydrogen with CNG fuel, the characteristics of output and discharge gas is improved by the mixer's burning velocity improved, and, at the same time, is possible to have stable lean combustion with the reduction of $CO_2$ expected. Therefore, this research tries to identify the characteristics of engine and emission gas when mixing CNG fuel and hydrogen in each portion and burning them in spark igniting engine, and grasp the combustion stability and emission gas characteristics according and use it as the basic data of hydrogen-CNG premixed engine.

  • The thermodynamic performance of the electrochemical hydrogen compressor was analyzed to perform a comparative analysis with the performance of the mechanical compressor. The performance was analyzed through the applied current and the measured voltage value. The test results showed that the efficiency of the electrochemical hydrogen compressor was high in the low current density range. In addition, it was confirmed that the amount of increasing compress work of the electrochemical hydrogen compressor is smaller than that of the mechanical compressor. Therefore, it is expected to have higher efficiency than mechanical compression when compressed with a sufficiently high-pressure range.

  • Stratified charge has been thought as one of the ways to avoid a sharp pressure rise on HCCI combustion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR on HCCI combustion. The pre-mixture with thermal, mixing and EGR stratifications is charged in Rapid Compression Machine. After that, the pre-mixture is compressed and in that process, in-cylinder gas pressure and temperature are analyzed. Additionally numerical calculation with multi-zones modeling is run to know the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR.

  • Reliable $H_2$ supply is necessary for entering a $H_2$ society. Among the various $H_2$ storage and transportation methods, liquid organic $H_2$ carrier (LOHC) is in the spotlight because of a lot of advantages compared to conventional one such as compressed $H_2$ and liquefied $H_2$. Therefore, we performed preliminary economic analysis of $H_2$ supply cost using LOHC for a $H_2$ production capacity of $300Nm^3\;h^{-1}$ employing itemized cost estimation and sensitivity analysis to evaluate economic viability of this technology in Korea.

소형 고분자 연료전지 스택의 체결압력에 따른 성능 특성 (The Effect of Stack Clamping Pressure on the Performance of a Miniature PEMFC Stack)

  • The effect of gas diffusion layer (GDL) compression caused by different stack clamping pressures on fuel cell performance was experimentally studied in a miniature 5-cell proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. Three stacks with different GDL compressions, 15%, 35% and 50%, were prepared using SGL 10BC carbon fiber felt GDL and Gore 57 series MEA. The PEMFC stack performance and the stack stability were enhanced with increasing stack clamping pressure resulting in the best performance and stability for the stack with higher GDL compressions up to 50%. The excellent performance of the stack with high GDL compression was mainly due to the reduced contact resistance between GDL and bipolar plate in the stack, while reduced gas permeability of the excessively compressed GDL in the stack hardly affected the stack performance. The high stack clamping pressure also resulted in excessive GDL compression under the rib areas of bipolar plate and large GDL intrusion into the channels of the plate, which reduced the by-pass flow in the channels and increase gas pressure drop in the stack. It seems that these phenomena in the highly compressed stack enhance the water management in the stack and lead to the high stack stability.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are currently being used in various transport applications such as drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and automobiles. The power required is different according to the type of use, purpose, and the conditions adjusted using a cell stack. The fuel cell stack is compressed to reduce the size and prevent fuel leakage. The unit cells that make up the cell stack are subjected to compression by clamping force, which makes geometrical changes in the porous media and it impacts on cell performance. In this study, finite elements method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for the deformed unit cell considering the effects of clamping force is performed. First, structural analysis using the FEM technique over the deformed gas diffusion layer (GDL) considering compression is carried out, and the resulting porosity changed in the GDL is calculated. The PEMFC model is then verified by a three-dimensional, two-phase fuel cell simulation applying the physical properties and geometry obtained before and after compression. The detailed simulation results showed different concentration distributions of fuel between the original and deformed geometry, resulting in the difference in the distribution of current density is represented at compressed GDL region with low oxygen concentration.

몇 가지 냉매를 사용한 이산화탄소 액화에 대한 비교 연구 (Comparative Research on the Carbon Dioxide Liquefaction Using Several Refrigerants)

  • In this study, we compared the performance of several refrigeration cycles using different refrigerants and utilizing the cold heat of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the liquefaction of carbon dioxide. The final conditions for the liquefied CO2 were set to -20℃ and 20 bar. The refrigerants used included R404a, ammonia, propane, and propylene using a vapor recompression refrigeration cycle. For the refrigeration cycle, the CO2 at room temperature and pressure was compressed in a two-stage compression process with an intermediate cooling stage using a refrigeration unit. To compare with the liquefaction process using refrigeration, we compressed the CO2 to 8 bar in a single compression stage and cooled it to around -50℃ using the cold heat of the LNG before liquefying it. Results showed that using ammonia as the refrigerant required the least amount of compressor power for the liquefaction process, and the heat transfer area of the evaporator was the smallest when using propylene as the refrigerant. Using the cold heat of LNG instead of refrigeration using R404a resulted in approximately 69% less energy consumption.

불활성 가스하 열건조에 따른 금속시험편의 수소잔류물 거동 분석 (Variation of Hydrogen Residue on Metallic Samples by Thermal Soaking in an Inert Gas Environment)

  • Hydrogen penetration into a metal leads to damages and mechanical degradations and its content measurement is of importance. For a precise measurement, a sample preparation procedure must be optimized through a series of studies on sample washing and drying. In this study, two-step washing with organic solvents and thermal soaking in inert gas were tried with a rod-shaped, API X65 steel sample. The samples were machined from a steel plate and then washed in acetone and etyl-alcohol for 5 minute each and dried with compressed air. After then, the samples were thermally soaked in a home-made nitrogen gas chamber during 10 minute at different heat gun temperatures from 100 to $400^{\circ}C$ and corresponding temperature range in the soaking chamber was from 77 to $266^{\circ}C$ according to the temperature calibration. Hydrogen residue in the samples was measured with a hot extraction system after each soaking step; hydrogen residue of $0.70{\pm}0.12$ wppm after the thermal soaking at $77^{\circ}C$ decayed with increase of the soaking temperature. By adopting the heat transfer model, decay behavior of the hydrogen residue was fitted into an exponential decay function of the soaking temperature. Saturated value or lower bound of the hydrogen residue was 0.36 wppm and chamber temperature required to lower the hydrogen residue about 95% of the lower bound was $360^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, a thermal desorption spectroscopy was done for the fully soaked samples at $360^{\circ}C$. Weak hydrogen peak was observed for whole temperature range and it means that hydrogen-related contaminants of the sample surface are steadily removed by heating. In addition, a broad peak found around $400^{\circ}C$ means that parts of the hydrogen residue are irreversibly trapped in the steel microstructure.

수소 혼합 천연가스 연료 엔진의 아이들 연비에 관한 연구 (The Study for Idle Fuel Consumption of a Hydrogen-Blended Natural Gas Engine)

  • 천연가스-수소 혼합가스를 엔진 연료로 사용하는 방법은 배기가스 저감뿐만 아니라 다가올 수소에너지 시대를 대비하여 수소 인프라를 구축하는 데도 의의가 있다. 또한 수소 혼합 천연가스 연료 엔진은 천연가스 엔진 보다 더 높은 열효율 확보할 수 있어 에너지의 효율적 사용에 있어서도 매우 우수한 연료이다. 본 연구에서는 시내버스가 가장 많이 운전되는 조건인 아이들 조건을 대상으로 수소 혼합 천연가스 연료가 연료소모량과 배기가스 저감에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다. 실험 결과 수소 혼합 천연가스 연료는 천연가스에 비해 아이들 조건에서 연료소비율이 20%이상 저감되었으며 유해 배출가스인 THC, NOx를 근원적으로 저감시킴을 확인할 수 있었다.
