Processing of Polymer-derived Microcellular Ceramics Containing Reactive Fillers

  • Processing techniques for producing microcellular silicon carbide, mullite, and cordierite ceramics have been developed by a reaction method that incorporates a polysiloxane and reactive fillers. The techniques developed in this study offer substantial flexibility for producing microcellular ceramics whereby cell size, cell density, degree of interconnectivity, composition, and porosity can all be effectively controlled. It is demonstrated that the adjustment of filler composition enables the possibility of tailoring the composition and properties of the microcellular ceramics. The present results suggest that the proposed novel processing techniques are suitable for the manufacture of microcellular ceramics with high morphological uniformity.

첨가제의 조성과 함량이 코디어라이트 세라믹스의 소결밀도와 압축강도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Additive Composition and Content on Sintered Density and Compressive Strength of Cordierite Ceramics)

  • Cordierite ceramics were fabricated via a reaction sintering process using ceramics-filled polysiloxane as a precursor for cordierite ceramics. In this study, the effects of the additive composition, additive content, and sintering temperature on the sintered density and compressive strength of cordierite ceramics have been investigated The sintered densities of reaction-sintered cordierite ceramics containing $TiO_2$ as an additive were insensitive to the additive composition, additive content, and sintering temperature and ranged from $1.92g/cm^3\;to\;2.06g/cm^3$. In contrast, the cordierite ceramics containing $Y_2O_3$ showed a maximal density of $2.21g/cm^3$ at 5 wt% addition and at a sintering temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$. The compressive strength of cordierite ceramics showed the same tendency with the density. Typical compressive strength of cordierite ceramics containing 5 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering additive and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C\;was\;{\sim}480MPa$.

Effect of Stress on Current-Voltage Characteristics of ZnO Based Ceramics

  • The chemical composition and uniaxial compressive stress are varied to observe their effect on the current-voltage characteristics of ZnO based ceramics. The variation of chemical composition produces two kinds of ceramics showing ohmic and nonohmic current-voltage characteristics. The current at a fixed voltage increased with the increase of the compressive stress for both ohmic and nonohmic ceramics. Ceramics showing nonohmic behavior exhibit better reversible return of current-voltage curve when the applied compressive stress is removed from the ceramics than those showing ohmic behavior do. We found an appropriate chemical composition showing linear relation between current and stress at a fixed voltage. The ceramic materials with an appropriate chemical composition can be used as a potential sensing material in pressure sensors.

Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O3 세라믹스의 유전 및 전기열량 특성 (Dielectric and Electrocaloric Properties of Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O3 Ceramics)

  • In this study, in order to develop composition ceramics for refrigeration device application at a temperature of less than $90^{\circ}C$, a $Ba(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ composition was fabricated using a conventional solid-state method. Electrocaloric properties of these ceramics were investigated using the characteristics of P-E hysteresis loops in a wide temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$. The Curie temperature of $Ba(Ti_{1-x}Zr_x)O_3$ ceramics decreased with the increase of x. The maximum value of ${\Delta}T=0.07^{\circ}C$ in an ambient temperature of $85^{\circ}C$ under 30 kV/cm appeared when x = 0.125. It was concluded that the composition (x = 0.125) ceramics can be used for refrigeration device applications.

상경계 PZT 세라믹스의 강유전 분역구조 및 정방정상과 능면체정상의 공간적 배열 (Ferroelectric Domain Structure and Array of Tetragonal and Rhombohedral Phase in PZT Ceramics at MPB Composition)

  • Domain structure and the spatial arrangement of tetragonal and rhombohedral phases in PZT ceramics at MPB composition were investigated with a transmission electron microscope. Fringe Contrast and doublet spot splitting were observed in the image mode and the selected area diffraction pattern, respectively. Besides, triplet spot splitting was also observed in the other part of the specimen. These observations indicate that both the single phase regions and the regions which are comosed of alternatively arranged tetragonal and rhombohedral domains coexist in a PZT ceramics at the MPB composition.

전계 인가에 따른 PLZT 강유전체의 유전특성 및 전기열량 효과 (Dielectric Properties and Electrocaloric Effects of PLZT Ferroelectric Ceramics by Applying Electric Fields)

  • In this study, in order to develop relaxor ferroelectric ceramics for refrigeration device application with large electrocaloric effect, PLZT(8/65/35) composition was fabricated using conventional solid-state method. The Curi temperature of this composition PLZT ceramics was $230^{\circ}C$, and the P-E hysteresis loops of the PLZT ceramics as a fuction of temperature became slim by degrees with higher temperatures. The maximum value of ${\Delta}T$ of $0.243^{\circ}C$ in ambient temperature of $215^{\circ}C$ with 30 kV/cm was appeared. It is considered that PLZT ceramics possess the possibility of refrigeration device application.

  • In order to form metallic electrodes on PZT (Pb (Zr, Ti)O$_3$) ceramics, plating conditions for optimal electroless Ni deposition were investigated. Pb in PZT is the major component to inhibit the electroless deposition, because it plays a active role of catalytic poison in plating solution. Adhesion of the electroless Ni deposits is measured by push-pull scale test and peel test. Results such as deposition ability, deposition rate, and thickness of deposits showed in terms of concentration of etchant, composition of catalyzing solution, and composition and pH of electroless bath solution.

  • Nitride Phosphors have recently been considered as a novel class of luminescent materials for white LEDs due to their promising luminescent properties. It is of great importance to tailor the emission color in order to meet the requirements for practical applications. The paper presents the results of tuning the emission colors of sialon phosphors through compositional tailoring.

유전성 glass-ceramics 제조에 관한 연구 (A study on the manufacture of dielectric glass-ceramics)

  • The composition of glasses to be suitable for crystallisation of $BaTiO_3$ by heat-treatment and the dielectric properties of the glass-ceramics were investigated. The composition of the family of glasses was defined by the formula $\chi$ $BaTiO_3 + (100-$\chi$)Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ and excess BaO. Data were presented on dielectric constant and loss tangent at various frequencies. The effects of excess BaO on dielectric properties were investigated. The additions of $Na_2O$ and $Nb_2O_5$ shifted the Curite temperature of these glass-ceramics. The glass composition which was able to be melted at 145$0^{\circ}C$ and moulded as homogeneous glass phase without devitrification should contain $Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ more than 30 mole %. The more the amount of additive BaO increased, the more dielectric constant increased. When the maximum heat-treatment temperature was 105$0^{\circ}C$, we obtained higher dielectric constant than that of 95$0^{\circ}C$. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss were stable at frequencies between 5$\times$104 and 107 cycle per second. When $Na_2O$ and $Nb_2O_5$ were added, the Curie temperature, presented at 14$0^{\circ}C$ to 15$0^{\circ}C$, shifted to lower temperature. Therefore, the glass-ceramics having high dielectric constant at room temperature were obtained.

  • In this study, in order to develop composition ceramics for refrigeration device application, $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ composition was fabricated using conventional solid-state method. Electrocaloric effect of this ceramic was investigated using the characteristics of P-E hysteresis loops at wide temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$. Curie temperature of $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ ceramics showed $80^{\circ}C$. The maximum value of ${\Delta}T=0.12^{\circ}C$ in ambient temperature of $115^{\circ}C$ under 30 kV/cm was appeared. It is concluded that $Ba(Ti_{0.9}Zr_{0.1})O_3$ ceramics can be applied as refrigeration device application.
