A π-shaped composite deck in the form of an open section is a type of blunt body that is highly susceptible to wind loads. To investigate its vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance, a large-scale (1/20) section model of a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 650 m was tested in a wind tunnel. The vibration suppression mechanism of the countermeasures was analyzed using computational fluid dynamic. Experimental results demonstrate that the vertical and torsional VIVs of the original section can be suppressed by combining guide plates with a tilt angle of 35° and bottom central stabilizing plates as aerodynamic countermeasures. Numerical results indicate that the large-scale vortex under the deck separates into smaller vortices, resulting in the disappearance of the von Kármán vortex street in the wake zone because the countermeasures effectively suppress the VIVs. Furthermore, a full-bridge aeroelastic model with a scale of 1/100 was constructed and tested to evaluate the wind resistance performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures.
Open-cross-section composite beam (OCB) tends to suffer vortex-induced vibration (VIV) due to its bluff aerodynamic shape. A cable-stayed bridge equipped with typical OCB is taken as an example in this paper to conduct sectional model wind tunnel test. Vortex-induced vibration is observed and maximum vibration amplitudes are obtained. CFD approach is employed to calculate the flow field around original cross sections in service stage and construction stage, as well as sections added with three different countermeasures: splitters, slabs and wind fairings. Results show that flow separate on the upstream edge and cause vortex shedding on original section. Splitters can only smooth the flow field on the upper surface, while slabs cannot smooth flow field on the upper or lower surface too much. Thus, splitters or slabs cannot serve as valid aerodynamic means. Wind tunnel test results show that VIV can only be mitigated when wind fairings are mounted, by which the flow field above and below the bridge deck are accelerated simultaneously.
The shock wave is deformed and the vortex is elongated simultaneously during the shock-vortex interaction. More precisely, the shock wave is deformed to a S-shape, consisting of a leading shock and a lagging shock by which the corresponding local vortex flows are accelerated and decelerated, respectively: the vortex flow swept by the leading shock is locally expanded and the one behind the lagging shock is locally compressed. As the leading shock escapes the vortex in the order of microseconds, the expanded flow region is quickly changed to a compression region due to the implosion effect. An induced shock is developed here and propagated against the vortex flow. This happens for a strong vortex because the tangential flow velocity of the vortex core is high enough to make the induced-shock wave speed supersonic relative to the vortex flow. For a weak shock, the vortex is basically subsonic and the induced shock wave is absent. For a vortex of intermediate strength, an induced shock wave is developed in the supersonic region but dissipated prematurely in the subsonic region. We have expounded these three shock-vortex interaction patterns that depend on the vortex flow regime using a third-order ENO method and numerical shadowgraphs.

In this study, the flow characteristics at the ventilation holes was analyzed by using numerical method when carbon composite brake disk was rotated at a constant speed. In order to ensure the validity of the analysis results, grid dependency test was performed by considering the accuracy and appropriateness, and 4mm mesh size was selected for decrease of the maximum error rate 63.6%. As a result, the outside air flows in the clearance between the disk and shaft in case of B model. whereas, the outside air flows in the clearance or the outlet of the ventilation holes in case of A and C models. And also average static pressure at the outlet was changed depending on shape of the ventilation holes and rotational speed of the disk in case of A and C models. Besides, in the B model, intake air according to the clearance goes with side surface of ventilation hole, and so increased by mean velocity of 4.64m/s and mean pressure of 0.58pa in the ventilation hole outlet, in case of disk rotational speed of 146.21rad/s.
In this study, scale-down design of full-scale Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) main rotor blade has been investigated. The scaled model system were designed for the measurement of aerodynamic performance, tip vortex and noise source. For the purpose of considering the same aerodynamic loads, the Mach-scale method has been applied. The Mach-scaled model has the same tip Mach number, and it also has the same normalized frequencies. That is, the Mach-scaled model is analogous to full-scale model in the view point of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Aerodynamic scale-down process could be completed just by adjusting scaling dimensions and increasing rotating speed. In the field of structural dynamics, design process could be finished by confirming the rotating frequencies of the designed blade with the stiffness and inertial properties distributions produced by sectional design. In this study, small-scaled blade sectional design were performed by applying domestic composite prepregs and structural dynamic characteristics of designed model has been investigated.
A bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester is developed for harvesting energy under the vortex induced vibration and it is integrated to a host structure of a trapezoidal plate without changing its passive dynamic properties. It is aimed to select trapezoidal plate as similar to a vertical fin-like structure which could be a part of an air vehicle. The designed energy harvester consists of an aluminum beam and two identical multi fiber composite (MFC) piezoelectric patches. In order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the trapezoidal plate, finite element analysis is performed and it is validated through an experimental study. The bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester is then integrated to the trapezoidal plate at the most convenient location with minimal structural displacement. The finite element model is constructed for the new combined structure in ANSYS Workbench 14.0 and the analyses performed on this particular model are then validated via experimental techniques. Finally, the energy harvesting performance of the bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester attached to the trapezoidal plate is also investigated through wind tunnel tests under the air load and the obtained results indicate that the system is a viable one for harvesting reasonable amount of energy.

The static aeroelastic analysis of composite hingeless rotor blades in hover was performed using free-wake method. Large deflection beam theory was applied to analyze blade motions as a one-dimension beam. Anisotropic beam theory was applied to perform a cross-sectional analysis for composite rotor blades. Aerodynamic loads were calculated through a three-dimensional aerodynamic model which is based on the unsteady vortex lattice method. The wake geometry in hover was described using a time-marching free-wake method. Numerical results of the steady-state deflections for the composite hingeless rotor blades were presented and compared with those results based on two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory and prescribed wake method. It was shown that wakes affect the steady-state deflections.
Numerical investigations are presented, which show that a back-flow flap can improve the dynamic stall characteristics of oscillating airfoils. The flap was able to weaken the stall vortex and therefore to reduce the peak in the pitching moment. This paper gives a brief insight into the method of function of a back-flow flap. Initial wind tunnel experiments were performed to define the structural requirements for a detailed experimental wind tunnel characterization. A structural integration concept and two different actuation mechanisms of a back-flow flap for a helicopter rotor blade are presented. First a piezoelectric actuation system was investigated, but the analytical model to estimate the performance showed that the displacement generated is too low to enable reliable operation. The seond actuation mechanism is based on magnetic forces to generate an impulse that initiates the opening of the flap. A concept based on two permanent magnets is further detailed and characterized, and this mechanism is shown to generate sufficient impulse for reliable operation in the wind tunnel.

Surmounting complexities in analyzing the mechanical parameters of concrete entails selecting an appropriate methodology. This study integrates a novel metaheuristic technique, namely satin bowerbird optimizer (SBO) with artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of concrete. For this purpose, the created hybrid is trained and tested using a relatively large dataset collected from the published literature. Three other new algorithms, namely Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO), sunflower optimization (SFO), and vortex search algorithm (VSA) are also used as benchmarks. After attaining a proper population size for all algorithms, the Utilizing various accuracy indicators, it was shown that the proposed ANN-SBO not only can excellently analyze the UCS behavior, but also outperforms all three benchmark hybrids (i.e., ANN-HGSO, ANN-SFO, and ANN-VSA). In the prediction phase, the correlation indices of 0.87394, 0.87936, 0.95329, and 0.95663, as well as mean absolute percentage errors of 15.9719, 15.3845, 9.4970, and 8.0629%, calculated for the ANN-HGSO, ANN-SFO, ANN-VSA, and ANN-SBO, respectively, manifested the best prediction performance for the proposed model. Also, the ANN-VSA achieved reliable results as well. In short, the ANN-SBO can be used by engineers as an efficient non-destructive method for predicting the UCS of concrete.
