  • As a part of studies to lower the infrared (IR) emissivity from the surface of exhaust nozzle in the turbo jet engine, stainless steel plate was coated with copper particle/meta-aramid resin composites and the IR emissivity of the plate were investigated. Binders of filler particles based on synthetic polymers generally undergo thermal decomposition before $300^{\circ}C$. It was found that the meta aramid resin was thermally stable after the test at $320^{\circ}C$, confirming the excellent thermal stability. Contents of copper particles in the composites were varied from 0 to 70% by volume. It was observed that the copper particle/meta aramid resin composites showed good adhesion after the tests at $320^{\circ}C$. The specimen coated with the composite containing 50 vol% of copper particles showed the lowest IR emissivity, 0.6, at $320^{\circ}C$.

  • Microwave-assisted process (MAP) was applied to extract antioxidant-related components from Thymus quinquecostatus var. japonica Hara. Microwave power(2,450 MHz, $0{\sim}160$ W) and extraction time($1{\sim}5\;min$) were used as independent variables($X_i$) for central composite design to yield 10 different extraction conditions. Response surface methodology was applied to predict optimum extraction conditions for dependent variables of extracts, such as total yield, total phenolics, flavonoid, and electron donation ability depending on different powers and extraction times of MAP. Determination coefficients($R^2$) of regression equations for dependent variables were higher than 0.93 excluding that of total phenolics, and microwave power was predicted more influential than extraction time in MAP (p<0.05). The optimal extraction time for each dependent variable was ranged from 3.36 to 4.97 min, but microwave power showed wide ranges depending on variables. The superimposed contour maps for maximized dependent variables illustrated extraction conditions of 64 to 100 W in microwave power and 2.9 to 4.0 min in extraction time.

  • This study was conducted to monitor the quality characteristics of mate (Ilex paraguarensis) ethanolic extracts via the response surface methodology. In the extraction conditions that were based on the central composite design with variations in the ethanol concentration (0-100%), extraction temperature($35-95^{\circ}C$), and the ratio of the solvent to the sample (10~30 mL/g). The extraction yield and total polyphenol content improved with the increase in the ethanol concentration than in the extraction temperature. The caffeic acid content increased with the decrease in the solvent ratio. The coefficients of determinations ($R^2$) were 0.8842 (p<0.05), 0.8729 (p<0.05), and 0.9205 (p<0.05) in terms of the electron donating ability, nitrite scavenging effect (pH 3.0), and SOD-like ability, respectively. The estimated conditions for the maximized extraction, including in terms of the yield, total polyphenol content, caffeic acid content, and electron donating ability, were a 21-48% ethanol concentration, a $76.4^{\circ}C$ extraction temperature, and 10-14mL/g solvent-to-sample ratio.

  • The alcohol fermentation of apple juice was optimized as a preliminary study for the production of natural apple cider vinegar. To gain an optimal fermentation yield, a central composite design was used to investigate the effects of the independent variables [initial Brix (12/14/16/18/20, $X_1$), fermentation time(48/54/60/66/72h, $X_2$), and fermentation temperature(24/26/28/30/$32^{\circ}C$, $X_3$)] on the dependent variables (alcohol content, reducing sugar, Brix, acidity). The alcohol content was 3.4-6.4%, the reducing sugar was 1.93-6.24%, and the Brix was $6.1-13.8^{\circ}$. The alcohol content was mainly affected by the fermentation temperature and increased along with the fermentation time and temperature. The amount of the reducing sugar was significantly affected by the initial Brix and fermentation temperature. The optimal conditions for the alcohol content were found to be 15.22 initial Brix, 64.97 h fermentation time, and $31.56^{\circ}C$ temperature.

  • In this study, we measured total flavonoids after extracting the total flavonoids from lemongrass which is known to have a high content of antioxidant ingredients when using microwave energy. Also, optimal extraction conditions of active ingredients using central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) were presented. Both ultrapure water and alcohol were used as extraction solvents and the volume ratio of ethanol/ultrapure water, microwave irradiation time, and microwave irradiation power were set as independence variables. And the extraction yield and total flavonoids were measured. The optimal extraction conditions using CCD-RSM were the volume ratio of ethanol/ultrapure water = 56.3 vol.%, the microwave irradiation time = 6.1 min, and the microwave irradiation power = 574.6 W. We could also obtain expected results of yield = 17.2 wt.% and total flavonoids = 44.7 ㎍ QE/mL dw under the optimum conditions. The comprehensive satisfaction degree of this formula was 0.8562. The P-value was calculated for the yield of 0.037 and the total flavonoids content of 0.002. The average error from actual experiments established for the verification of conclusions was lower than 2.5%. Therefore, a high favorable level could be obtained when the CCD-RSM was applied to the optimization of extraction process.

  • The optimal recipe for manufacturing composite honey-based herbal pills mainly comprising Rubus coreanus powder (RCP), black mulberry powder (BMP), and vitamin C was investigated. Honey-based herbal pills were prepared by mixing these powders, binding them with honey, and then forming a round shape. The experiment was designed based on the D-optimal mixture design, which included 12 experimental points with one replicate for three independent variables as follows: RCP (10~35%), BMP (10~35%), and vitamin C (5~10%). In addition, the dependent variables (total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity) were measured and used to optimize the manufacturing conditions. The results showed that high amounts of RCP were correlated with high total flavonoid content, whereas the addition of high amounts of vitamin C resulted in higher antioxidant activity. In conclusion, an optimized formulation for the honey-based herbal pill was found to contain 35% RCP, 10% BMP, and 10% vitamin C.

  • In this study, the experimental design methodology was applied to optimize 1,4-dioxane treatment in E-beam process. Main factor was mathematically described as a function of parameters 1,4-dioxane removal efficiencies(%), TOC removal efficiencies(%) modeled by the use of the central composite design(CCD) method among the response surface methodology(RSM). Concentration of 1,4-dioxane is designated as "$x_1$" and Irradiation intensity is designated as "$x_2$". The regression equation in coded unit between the 1,4-dioxane concentration and removal efficiencies(%) was $y=71.00-10.85x_1+20.67x_2+{1.53x_1}^2-{7.92x_2}^2-1.23x_1x_2$. The regression equation in coded unit between the 1,4-dioxane concentration and TOC removal efficiencies(%) was $y=44.48-13.25x_1+9.54x_2+{5.43x_1}^2-{1.35x_2}^2+4.45x_1x_2$. The model predictions agreed well with the experimentally observed results $R^2$(Adj) over 90%. Toxicity test using algae Pseudokirchneriella Subcapitata showed that the inhibition was reduced according to increasing an E-beam irradiation.

  • In this study, an optimization for the production of water emulsion was designed by adding an extract of wheat sprout, which is known to contain a large amount of antioxidants. The central composite design of reaction surface analysis method (CCD-RSM) was used for the optimization process. The amount of emulsifier, emulsification time, and added amount of wheat sprout extract were selected as independent variables based on our preliminary experiments. The mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity, and emulsion stability index (ESI) were set as the responses to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. For each independent variable, the P-value and coefficient of determination were evaluated to verify the reliability of the experiments. From the result of CCD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were determined as 23.6 min, 7.7 wt.%, and 3.9 wt.% for the emulsification time, amount of emulsifier, and amount of sprout, respectively. From the optimized condition obtained, MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from reaction were estimated as 252.3 nm, 616.7 cP, and 88.7%, respectively. The overall satisfaction was 0.9137, which supported the validity of the experiments, and the error rate was measured at 0.5% or less by advancing the experiments. Therefore, an optimized process for producing an emulsion by adding the malt extract was designed by the CCD-RSM.

  • Concrete is a representative composite material that shows excellent performance in the construction field. However, it is a brittle and nonhomogeneous material and exhibits weak behavior against bending and tensile forces. To compensate for such weakens, fiber reinforcement has been utilized, and steel fiber has been recognized as one of the best material for such purpose. However, steel fiber can seriously affect the durability of concrete exposed to the marine environment due to the corrosion caused by chlorine ions. This study intended to evaluate the mechanical performance of steel fiber reinforce concrete during and after repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution. According to the experimental results, there was no reduction in the relative dynamic modulus of concrete during the repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution for 37 weeks. Flexural strength was not decreased after completion of repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution. There was no sign of corrosion in steel fibers after visual observation of fractured surface. However, the flexural toughness was decreased, and this is because about half of the concrete specimen showed failure before reaching the maximum displacement of 3 mm. Although repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution did not cause cracks in concrete through corrosion of steel fibers, specific attention is required because it can reduce flexural toughness of steel fiber reinforced concrete.

  • The goal of this study is to improve flow and noise performances of existing backward-curved blade centrifugal fan system used for circulating cold air in a refrigerator freezer by optimally designing airfoil shape. The unique characteristics of the system is to drive cold airflow with two volute tongues in combination with duct system in a back side of a refrigerator without scroll housing generally used in a typical centrifugal fan system. First, flow and noise performances of existing fan system were evaluated experimentally. A P-Q curve was obtained using a fan performance tester in the flow experiment, and noise spectrum was measured in an anechoic chamber in the noise experiment. Then, flow characteristics were numerically analyzed by solving the three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and noise analysis was performed by solving the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkins equation with input from the flow simulation results. The validity of numerical results was confirmed by comparing them with the measured ones. Based on the verified numerical method, blade inlet and outlet angles were optimized for maximum flow rate using the two-factor central composite design of the response surface method. Finally, the flow and noise performances of a prototype manufactured with the optimum design were experimentally evaluated, which showed the improvement in flow and noise performance.
