Steel coupling beam in reinforced concrete (RC) coupled shear wall system is a proper substitute for deep concrete coupling beam. Previous studies have shown that RC coupled walls with steel or concrete coupling beam designed with strength-based design approach, may not guarantee a ductile behavior of a coupled shear wall system. Therefore, seismic performance evaluation of RC coupled shear wall with steel or concrete coupling beam designed based on a strength-based design approach is essential. In this paper first, buildings with 7, 14 and 21 stories containing RC coupled shear wall system with concrete and steel coupling beams were designed with strength-based design approach, then performance level of these buildings were evaluated under two spectrum; Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) and Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE). The performance level of LS and CP of all buildings were satisfied under DBE and MCE respectively. In spite of the steel coupling beam, concrete coupling beam in RC coupled shear wall acts like a fuse under strong ground motion.

A beam is a major load-carrying member in many engineering structures. Beams with properly designed cross sections and stiffeners are required to enhance the structural properties. Such a design may cause various coupling behaviors, and therefore, an accurate analysis is essential for the proper design of beams. In this research, we manufactured box-beams with stiffeners, which mimic the out-of-plane composite bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature. A modal test is carried out to obtain the dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes, of the box-beam. The obtained results are compared with those of 3D FEM, which confirm that the out-of-plane bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature is possible. The coupling behavior can be controlled by the proper design of the stiffeners.

A generalized laminated composite beam element is presented for the flexural and buckling analysis of laminated composite beams with double and single symmetric cross-sections. Based on shear-deformable beam theory, the present beam model accounts for transverse shear and warping deformations, as well as all coupling terms caused by material anisotropy. The plane stress and plane strain assumptions were used along with the cross-sectional stiffness coefficients obtained from the analytical technique for different cross-sections. Two types of one-dimensional beam elements with seven degrees-of-freedom per node, including warping deformation, i.e., three-node and four-node elements, are proposed to predict the flexural behavior of symmetric or anti-symmetric laminated beams. To alleviate the shear-locking problem, a reduced integration scheme was employed in this study. The buckling load of laminated composite beams under axial compression was then calculated using the derived geometric block stiffness. To demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed beam elements, the results based on three-node beam element were compared with those of other researchers and ABAQUS finite elements. The effects of coupling and shear deformation, support conditions, load forms, span-to-height ratio, lamination architecture on the flexural response, and buckling load of composite beams were investigated. The convergence of two different beam elements was also performed.
A shear-flexible beam element is presented for the flexural analysis of laminated composite T-beams with arbitrary lay-ups. Based on the first-order shear deformable beam theory, the derived element takes into account warping shear deformation and all coupling coming from material anisotropy. Three different types of beam elements, namely, the two-noded, three-noded, and four-noded beam elements with seven degree-of-freedom per node are developed to solve governing equations. To demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the beam element formulated, numerical results are performed for symmetric and anti-symmetric angle-ply composite T-beams under the uniformly distributed and concentrated load. The effects of fiber angle and shear deformation are investigated for different laminated stacking sequence. The quadratic and cubic elements are shown to be applicable to the flexural analysis of composite T-beams.

Steel reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) components have been proposed for seismic structural applications, for example in coupling beams, infill panels, joints, columns, and flexural members. The development of strain in the steel reinforcement of cementitious components has been shown to vary based on both the steel reinforcement ratio and the applied deformation history. Strain in the steel reinforcement of reinforced ECC components is an important structural response metric because ultimate failure is often by fracture of the steel reinforcement. A recently proposed bond-slip model has been successfully calibrated to cyclically tested reinforced ECC beams wherein the deformation history contained monotonically increasing cycles. This paper reports simulations of two-dimensional finite element models of reinforced ECC beams to determine the appropriateness and significance of altering a phenomenological bond-slip model based on the applied deformation history. The numerical simulations with various values of post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness are compared to experimental results. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness had little effect on the cracking patterns and hysteretic response of the reinforced ECC flexural models tested, which consisted of two different steel reinforcement ratios subjected to two different deformation histories. Varying the post-peak bond-slip softening stiffness did, however, affect the magnitude of strain and the length of reinforcing bar that strain-hardened. Overall, a numerical model with a constant bond-slip model represented well various responses in reinforced ECC beams with multiple steel reinforcement ratios subjected to different deformation histories.
In order to improve the seismic resilience of coupled wall structure, coupling beam with fuse has been developed to reduce the post-earthquake damage. However, the fuses often have a build-up I-shaped section and are relatively heavy to be replaced. Moreover, the fuse and the beam segments are usually connected by bolts and it is time-consuming to replace the damaged fuse. For reducing the repair time and cost, a novel quickly replaceable coupling beam with buckling-restrained energy dissipaters is developed. The fuse of the proposed coupling beam consists of two chord members and bar-typed energy dissipaters placed at the corners of the fuse. In this way, the weight of the energy dissipater can be greatly reduced. The energy dissipaters and the chords are connected with hinge and it is convenient to take down the damaged energy dissipater. The influence of ratio of the length of coupling beam to the length of fuse on the seismic performance of the structure is also studied. The seismic performance of the coupled wall system with the proposed coupling beam is compared with the system with reinforced concrete coupling beams. Results indicated that the weight and post-earthquake repair cost of the proposed fuse can be reduced compared with the typical I-shaped fuse. With the increase of the ratio of the beam length to the fuse length, the interstory drift of the structure is reduced while the residual fuse chord rotation is increased.
Free vibration of a thin-walled laminated composite beam is studied. A general analytical model applicable to the dynamic behavior of a thin-walled channel section composite is developed. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for the coupling of flexural and torsional modes for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. i.e. unsymmetric as well as symmetric, and various boundary conditions. A displacement-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to predict natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes for a thin-walled composite beam. Equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite addressing the effects of fiber angle. modulus ratio. and boundary conditions on the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the composites.

An anisotropic beam model is proposed by employing an asymptotic expansion method for thermo-mechanical multiphysics environment. An asymptotic method based on virtual work is introduced first, and then the variables of mechanical displacement and temperature rise are asymptotically expanded by taking advantage of geometrical slenderness of elastic bodies. Subsequently substituting these expansions into the virtual work principle allows us to asymptotically expand the virtual work. This will yield a set of recursive virtual works from which two-dimensional microscopic and one-dimensional macroscopic equations are systematically derived at each order. In this way, homogenized stiffnesses and thermomechanical coupling coefficients are derived. To demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed approach, composite beams are taken as a test-bed example. The results obtained herein are compared to those of three-dimensional finite element analysis.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) has demonstrated its potentials for various smart structure applications. SMA wires undergo a reversible phase transformation from martensite to austenite as temperature increases. This transformation leads to shape recovery and associated recovery strains. If SMA actuators are embedded off the neutral surface and are oriented in arbitrary angles with respect to a beam axis, then the beam bends and twists due to the coupling effects of recovery strains activated. In this study, the bending and twisting of a SMA/Composite beam were controlled by both electric resistive heating and passive elastic tailoring. 3-dimensional finite element formulations were derived and validated to analyze the responses of the SMA/Composite beam. Numerical results show that the shape of the SMA/Composite beam can be controlled by judicious choices of control temperatures, SMA angles, and elastic tailoring.

Beams are often subject to bending-torsion coupled vibration due to mass coupling and/or stiffness coupling. This paper proposes a dynamic analysis method using the exact dynamic element for bending-torsion coupled vibration of general plane beam structures with joints. The exact dynamic element matrix for a bending-torsion coupled beam is derived, and the detailed procedure of using the exact dynamic element matrix is also presented. Three examples are provided for validating and illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves the proposed method to be useful for dynamic analysis of bending-torsion coupled beam structures with joints.
