  • This paper describes the development of THC reduction technologies compliant with SULEV regulations. Technologies embodied by the developmental work include improvement of fuel spray atomization, quick warm-up through coolant control shut of, and acceleration of fuel atomization for the fast rise of cylinder head temp inside the water jacket as well as the improvement of combustion state. The technologies likewise entail reduced HC while operating in lean A/F condition during engine warm-up with the cold lean burn technology, individual cylinder A/F control for improvement of catalytic converting efficiency, after-treatment such as thin-wall catalyst, HC-adsorber and EHC and etc, through vehicle application evaluation in cold start. We carried out an experimental as well as a practical study against SULEV regulations, and the feasibility of adopting these items in vehicle was likewise investigated.

  • We review a series of studies on turbulent skin friction drag reduction in wall-turbulence recently conducted in Japan. First, an identity equation relating the skin friction drag and the Reynolds shearstress (the FIK identity) is introduced. Based on the implication of the FIK identity, a new analytical suboptimal feedback control law requiring the streamwise wall-shear stress only is introduced and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of turbulent pipe flow with that control is reported. We also introduce DNS of an anisotropic compliant surface and parameter optimization using an evolutionary optimization technique.

  • This paper proposes a compliance robot control algorithm using fuzzy adaptive controller and fuzzy compliance vector generator. In the compliance robot control, we need more adaptivity because the linear modeling in robot dynamics is getting more difficult by contact with external environment. Existing adapitive controllers have difficulty in realtime processing. So in order to overcome it, We adopt fuzzy adaptive controller and propose fuzzy compliance vector generator for flexible compliant motion. We analyze and confirm the proposed algorithm by surface processing experiment with a control system implemented by VME system.

  • In this paper, neural network-based compliance control of telerobot is presented, This is a method to learn the compliance of human behavior and control telerobot using learned compliance. The consistency of human behavior is checked using Lipschitz's condition. The neural compliance model is composed of a multi-layered neural network which mimics the compliant notion of the human operator. The effectiveness of proposed scheme ie verified by a simulation study.

  • A new simple method for controlling compliant motions of a flexible robot arm is presented. The method aims at controlling translational tip motion, force and moment by directly computing the base motion or torque. A numerical inversion of Laplace transform is used to obtain the results in the time domain. The results show the effectiveness of the method for the hybrid translational position/force control of a flexible robot arm.

  • The performance of conventional robot arms is inhibited by trade-off between speed and accuracy. Because these systems measure only joint angles, in spite of slow speed, they must rely on a stiff structure in order to attain positioning accuracy. Lightweight links would allow faster motion, but their flexibility would also produce positioning errors. This research is involved with the development and evaluation of an End-point Control System whose major goal is to compensate for link deflections and thus mitigate the speed versus accuracy conflict in conventional manipulator.

  • In this paper, we discusses compliant actuators those are made of electrostrictive polymer. Electrostrictive polymer actuators(EPAs) are based on the deformation of dielectric elastomer polymer in the presence of an electric field. We address actual design and fabrication method of an actuator using the electrostrictive polymer. We have developed primitive prototypes of the actuator using elastic restoring force. And they actuators have 1 to 3 DOF, 1 DOF actuators are simple linear actuators and 3 DOF actuator has linear actuation and steering capability. They are simple in structure with lightweight, high trust, force and large stroke. Basic design principles and experimental procedures for confirming their performance will be introduced.

  • We have shown how unstructured modeling was used to derive a general stability condition in Part 1. In Part 2, we focus on the particular dynamics (structured modiling) of the robot manipulator and environment. Using rigid body dynamics, the stability condition for the direct drive robots has been achieved in terms of the Jacobian and robot tracking controller. Combining the structured and unstructured modeling, a stability condition for a particular application can be obtained. This approach has been used to analyze compliant motion on the University of Minnesota robot using a feedforward torque controller. We have obtained a stability condition for this application. Through both simulation and experiment, the sufficiency of this condition has been demonstrated. For a sufficient stability condition, recall that if the condition is satified, then the stability is guaranteed` however, if the condition is violated, no conclusion can be made.
