  • A copper complex of $\epsilon$-N-[(2-chloroethyl)carbamoyl]-L-lysine was prepared by the treatment of the L-lysine copper complex with 2-chloroethyl isocyanate in cold water. Within the L-lysine copper complex molecule, the $\alpha-amino$ and carboxyl groups are bounded to $Cu^{2+}$ but the $\epsilon-amino$ group is free and can react with carbamoylating agents. A potential antitumor agent, $\epsilon-N-[(2-chloroethyl)$ nitrosocarbamoyl]-L-lysine was synthesized by nitrosation of this copper complex with Na $NO_{2}$ in anhydrous formic acid, followed by the passage of $H_{2}$S gas.

  • This study was conducted to determine the seed dormancy types of Sambucus racemosa subsp. pendula Nakai and S. williamsii Hance. Low temperature stratification (1, 2, 3, 4 months) and GA3 treatment (1,000 mg/L) were performed on seeds to determine the type of seed dormancy. After the treatment, seeds were placed on a petri dish at 25℃ under light conditions. The germination rate and mean germination time were investigated. Results showed that cold stratification was effective in breaking the dormant state of the seed in both species. In the low temperature stratification treatment, the seed germination performance was improved as the treatment period was prolonged. Gibberellin treatment was effective in breaking the dormant state of S. racemosa subsp. pendula without low temperature stratification. However, S. williamsii did not break the dormant state of the seed by gibberellin treatment without low temperature stratification treatment. In the gibberellin treatment, germination performance was improved according to the low temperature stratification treatment period. As a result of this study, the seeds of S. williamsii have both an intermediate complex and a deep complex morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). In comparison, it was found that the S. racemosa subsp. pendula had intermediate composite MPD.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplemented enzyme complex on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in pigs weaned at 14 days of age. Eighty pigs ($4.02{\pm}0.11kg$ of average body weight) were allotted in a completely randomized block design. Treatments were as follows: 1) control (negative), 2) control (positive, $Kemzyme^{(R)}$), 3) 0.1%, 4) 0.2% and 5) 0.3% of newly developed enzyme complex. Each treatment has 4 replicates with 4 pigs per replicate. During phase I period (d 0 to 14), ADG and ADFI were numerically higher in pigs fed diets supplemented enzyme complex regardless of their inclusion levels compared to pigs fed control (negative) diet. Feed/gain (F/G) was also better in pigs fed enzyme complex diet than that of pigs fed control (negative) diet. In addition, with increasing the inclusion level of enzyme complex, ADG and ADFI were improved. However, there was no significant difference between treatment in all growth parameters. During phase II period (d 15 to 28), ADG, ADFI and F/G showed the same tendency as in phase I period. For overall period (d 0 to 28) ADG was highest in pigs fed diet included 0.2% enzyme complex in all treatments but not significantly different. During phase I period, the digestibilities of all nutrients did not showed any significant difference between treatments. However, pigs fed diet contained enzyme complex and positive control diet (Kemzyme) showed numerically higher nutrient digestibilities in all nutrients than pigs fed negative control diet. During phase II period, data were consistent with those observed in phase I period. Especially, the digestibility of phosphorus was significantly higher in pigs fed diets contained enzyme complex including phytase than pigs fed control (negative and positive) diets (p<0.05). For overall experimental period, fecal or ileal amino acid digestibility were not affected by dietary treatment. Enzyme complex newly developed and used in this study can be possibly recommended as a growth promoter when supplemented in diet for early weaned piglets.

  • Precision medicine stands for 4Ps - precise, preventive, participatory, and personal; in which "precision" is important because the current modern medicine starts from "trial and error," and "one does not fit all". Current targeted therapies for cancer have changed treatment approaches and led the precision medicine; however, clinical use of liquid biopsy, using blood or other liquid specimens to characterize circulating tumor cells (CTC) or tumor genes instead of biopsies of tumor tissues, still awaits availability of more information regarding non-invasive cancer detection and characterization, prediction of treatment response, monitoring the disease course and relapse possibilities, identification of mechanisms of drug resistance, and newer pathogenesis. In this review, we will introduce the basic concept of CTC, circulating cell free DNA, and exosomes and their possible application for gastric cancer relevant with Helicobacter pylori infection.

  • Platycodon grandiflorum and Glycyrrhiza uralensis contain several bioactive compounds, such as saponin, oleanolic acid, and flavone. P. grandiflorum and G. uralensis have traditionally been used to treat disorders related to blood pressure, diabetes, and counteracting poison, and they have antinociceptive and antiinflammatory properties. However, the validity of complex saponin's vasodilatory effect has not been scientifically investigated. Therefore, this study explores the vasodilatory effect of complex saponin extracted from P. grandiflorum and G. uralensis mixture extract on rabbit carotid arteries. To this end, arterial rings with intact or damaged endothelium were used in an organ bath experiment and contracted by endothelin. Complex saponins, the major active constituents of P. grandiflorum and G. uralensis mixture extract, exhibited a moderate vasodilatory effect on the rabbit's basilar arteries. Therefore, treatment with complex saponin extracted from P. grandiflorum and G. uralensis mixture extract may selectively accelerate cerebral blood flow through basilar arterial dilation. Overall, the findings suggest that the extracted complex saponins can serve as vasodilator sources.
