The Right Person for the Right Job: a Study on the Need for Enhancing Collaboration between Shipping Companies & Maritime Academies

  • Working onboard large ocean-going vessels is one of many industries that is by its very nature extremely error-provoking. In industries such as aviation, nuclear power, healthcare and transport, the need for mental preparedness and professionalism are amongst the qualities essential for the management of complex hazardous systems. Recruiting, training, and more importantly retaining the right people to work in these industries is of paramount importance if safety is to be continuously improved and economic benefits realized. Through consideration of extant empirical literature this paper will explore the need for enhancing collaboration between shipping companies and maritime training insitutes in order to provide the industry with those most capable for the job. It will be concluded that by providing a strong maritime foundation from the outset of training, maritime academies in South Korea can provide shipping companies with a wealth of highly qualified, motivated officers who will contribute to safety and remain valuable assets within the industry for years to come.

Integrated Structural Design of Oceanic Buildings using STEP (STEP을 이용한 해양건축물의 통합구조설계 기법)

  • The planning process of complex projects in oceanic architectural engineering is characterized by the cooperation of many involved specialists and by a high degree of information exchange. In order to improve the quality of the structural design of oceanic buildings, information of different involved partners in the planning process has to be integrated. This paper aims to introduce a concept of the integrated structural design for the floating-type oceanic building using STEP(Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data). STEP(ISO 10303) is an international standard for the computer-interpretable representation and exchange of product data and it provides a consistent data exchange format and application interfaces between different application systems. In this paper, the structural design process and information of oceanic buildings is analyzed and product models are preposed fir the exchange of the structural design information between superstructure and floating structure. The entities for calculating wind loads, metacenter and restoring forces are represented by Express. As a case study a floating hotel is applicated to describe the STEP physical file.

  • In these days, a scale of system is more and more complex and large. The centralized system has the operation management method to be limited in the large scale system. In this paper, we proposed ACOS(Autonomous decentralized Container terminal Operating System). It is applied to container terminal using by autonomous decentralized system which can solve the problem of the centralized operation system. Also, we can defined a function of the ACOS's sub-system and showed a flowchart on operation method for the ACOS.

A study on the column subtraction method applied to ship scheduling problem

  • Column subtraction, originally proposed by Harche and Thompson(]994), is an exact method for solving large set covering, packing and partitioning problems. Since the constraint set of ship scheduling problem(SSP) have a special structure, most instances of SSP can be solved by LP relaxation. This paper aims at applying the column subtraction method to solve SSP which can not be solved by LP relaxation. For remained instances of unsolvable ones, we subtract columns from the finale simplex table to get another integer solution in an iterative manner. Computational results having up to 10,000 0-1 variables show better performance of the column subtraction method solving the remained instances of SSP than complex branch-and-bound algorithm by LINDO.

A Study on FDTD Analysis and Fabrication of the Sheet-type Millimeter EM wave Absorber

  • In this paper, the EM wave absorber was developed for the 94-GHz detecting radar system. To analysis an EM wave absorber in millimeter wave band, we fabricated three absorber samples using carbon black and titanium dioxide and permalloy with chlorinated polyethylene. After measuring the complex relative permittivity, the absorption characteristics are simulated by 1D FDTD according to different thicknesses of less than 1.0 mm. Then, the EM wave absorber was fabricated based on the FDTD simulation. As a result, the measured results agreed well with the simulated ones, and the developed EM wave absorber with a thickness of 0.7 mm had the desired absorption characteristics of more than 14 dB in the frequency range of the 94-GHz band.

  • For a long time, genetic algorithms have been recognized as a new method to solve difficult and complex problems and the performance of genetic algorithms depends on genetic operators, especially crossover operator. Various problems like the traveling salesman problem, the transportation problem or the job shop problem, in logistics engineering can be modeled as a sequencing problem This paper proposes modified genetic crossover operators to be used at various sequencing problems and uses the traveling salesman problem to be applied to a real world problem like the delivery problem and the vehicle routing problem as a benchmark problem Because the proposed operators use parental information as well as network information, they could show better efficiency in performance and computation time than conventional operators.

디지털 벡터모듈레이터 기반의 $2{\times}2$ GPS CRPA 패턴 제어기술

  • 본 논문은 다양한 GPS 재밍대응 기술 중에서 안테나 기반의 CRPA(Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna) 시스템에 관한 소개 및 안테나의 널(null) 패턴 합성에 필요한 핵심 모듈인 디지털 I/Q 벡터모듈레이터(Vector Modulator)를 이용한 GPS용 $2{\times}2$ CRPA 패턴 제어방법에 관한 연구 내용이다. 일반적으로 시스템에서 미리 결정된 방향으로 만들어진 안테나 빔을 이용한 위상배열안테나(phased array antenna)와는 달리 CRPA 구조의 GPS 위성수신용 적응배열안테나(adaptive array antenna)는 각 안테나 소자(element)로부터 수신된 신호들을 실시간으로 해석하여, GPS 배열 안테나의 패턴 특성을 제어한다. 본 연구에서는 $2{\times}2$ 배열 정사각(square) 구조의 CRPA를 채택했으며, 재밍신호 방향으로 널(null) 패턴을 합성하기 위한 방법으로 PC에서 제어 가능한 DAC(Digital to Analog Converter)을 이용하여 I/Q 벡터모듈레이터로 인가되는 RF신호의 위상(phase) 및 진폭(amplitude)을 조절한다. 이때 원하는 널(null) 패턴이 합성되도록 네 개의 각 안테나 소자 쪽으로 8채널의 복소가중치(complex weight)를 인가한다.

Treatment of ballast water by complex process of advance filtration system

  • There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.
