  • Zinc consumption in a continuous galvanizing line is one of the highest operating cost items in the facility and minimizing zinc waste is a key economic objective for any operation. One of the primary sources of excessive loss of zinc is through the formation of top dross and skimmings in the coating pot. It has been reported that the top skimmings, manually removed from the bath, typically consist of more than 80% metallic zinc with the remainder being entrained dross particles ($Fe_2Al_5$) along with some oxides. Depending on the drossing practices and bath management, the composition of the removed top skimmings may contain up to 2 wt% aluminum and 1 wt% iron. On-going research efforts have been aimed at in-house recovery of the metallic zinc from the discarded top skimmings prior to selling to zinc recycling brokers. However, attempting to recover the zinc entrapped in the skimmings is difficult due to the complex nature of the intermetallic dross particles and the quality and volume of the recycled zinc is highly susceptible to fluctuations in processing parameters. As such, an efficient method to extract metallic zinc from top skimmings has been optimized through the use of a specialized thermo-mechanical process enabling a continuous galvanizing facility to conserve zinc usage on-site. Also, through this work, it has been identified that filtration of discrete dross particles has been proven effective at maintaining the cleanliness of the zinc. Future efforts may progress towards expanded utilization of filters in continuous galvanizing.

  • The objectives of this study are to propose a suitable treatment facility for waste energy recovery after analyzing the waste generation and disposal situation in Jejudo, to establish the plan to install the solar photovoltaics and wind power plant considering the site conditions and finally to establish the environmental energy town plan in conjunction with the existing facilities. The food waste biogas plant is selected as the treatment capacity of 200 ton/day. It is estimated that the biogas plant will produce the electricity of 7,594 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 4,177 $tCO_2$ per year. The solar photovoltaics and wind power plant will produce the electricity of 13,410 MWh per year, which will reduce the greenhouse gas of 7,375 $tCO_2$ per year. Environmental energy town will give us the reduction of operating cost by centralized treatment of residues and byproducts, and by efficient utilization of produced energy.

  • The advanced planning and scheduling(APS) is an well known enterprise information system that provides optimal production schedules and supports to complete production on time by solving the complex scheduling problems including capacity and due dates. In this paper, we focused on the improvement of the APS that is already established on a real company. The existing APS had several drawbacks, thus utilization and satisfaction were very low. We performed the focused group interviews and the process analysis and could find that the end users and developers have various objectives and the frequently used functions are different. We applied the analytical hierarchy process(AHP) to converge opinions of them on quantitative data. The results show that it is necessary to enhance visibility, to improve user interfaces and response speed, and to reconcile the real business process and the APS's process.

  • Recent advances in model acquisition, computer-aided design, and simulation technologies have resulted in massive databases of complex geometric data occupying multiple gigabytes and even terabytes. In various graphics/geometric applications, the major performance bottleneck is typically in accessing these massive geometric data due to the high complexity of such massive geometric data sets. However, there has been a consistent lower growth rate of data access speed compared to that of computational processing speed. Moreover, recent multi-core architectures aggravate this phenomenon. Therefore, it is expected that the current architecture improvement does not offer the solution to the problem of dealing with ever growing massive geometric data, especially in the case of using commodity hardware. In this tutorial, I will focus on two orthogonal approaches--multi-resolution and cache-coherent layout techniques--to design scalable graphics/geometric algorithms. First, I will discuss multi-resolution techniques that reduce the amount of data necessary for performing geometric methods within an error bound. Second, I will explain cache-coherent layouts that improve the cache utilization of runtime geometric applications. I have applied these two techniques into rendering, collision detection, and iso-surface extractions and, thereby, have been able to achieve significant performance improvement. I will show live demonstrations of view-dependent rendering and collision detection between massive models consisting of tens of millions of triangles on a laptop during the talk.

  • Effective Microorganisms (EM), a fermented medium developed by Professor Higa at the University of the Ryukyus, is a mixed culture containing dozens of microorganisms which are beneficial to nature including people, animals, plants and many microbial species in environment. EM is known to contain more than 80 kinds of anaerobic or aerobic microbes including photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, actinomycetes, fungi and so on, with yeast, lactic acid bacteria and photosynthetic bacteria as the main species of EM. Antioxidant effect generated by the concert of complex coexistence and coprosperity among these microbes is considered to be the main source of EM benefits. Currently, EM is earning an increasing attention with applications in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, environment and medicine among others. At the same time, however, a quantitative interpretation of EM system based on a mixed culture model needs efforts from biochemical engineers for efficient production and further promotion of EM. In this paper, we describe the functions of major microbes in EM and current researches and applications of EM in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fisheries, environment and medicine.

  • There has been increasing interest in the applications of synthesized molecules of nanometer scale in recent years due to their potential utilization in various fields such as biology, optoelectronics and molecular electronics. In this study, the terpyridine-platinum (II) complex on the periphery of the dendritic carbosilane has been prepared from the reaction of Pt(COD)Cl2 and the 4'-functionalized-(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) on dendrimers. The self-assembly process was carried out to obtain indivially dispersed dendrimer on Au (111) substrate. It was found that STM was unsuitable to obtain a obvious image of dendrimers. Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy(AFM) has been used to investigate the shape and size of dendrimers individually dispersed on Au (111)substrate. As a result, the imaged single dendrimer show that dendrimer is dome shaped and its size can be measured by tapping-mode AFM.
