  • The performance of IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) is influenced by several interactive parameters that make quality of service (QoS) control complex and difficult. In EDCA, the most critical performance influencing parameters are the arbitration interframe space (AIFS) and contention window size (CW) of each access category (AC). The objective of this paper is to provide a scheme for parameter control such that the throughput per station as well as the overall system throughput of the network is maximized and controllable. For this purpose, a simple and accurate analytical model describing the throughput behavior of EDCA networks is presented in this paper. Based on this model, the paper further provides a scheme in which a Pareto optimal system configuration is obtained via an appropriate CW control for a given AIFS value, which is a different approach compared to relevant papers in the literature that deal with CW control only. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method which shows significant performance improvements compared to other existing algorithms.

  • The present paper investigates the propagation of Love-type wave in a composite structure comprised of imperfectly bonded piezoelectric layer with lower fiber-reinforced half-space with rectangular shaped irregularity at the common interface. Closed-form expression of phase velocity of Love-type wave propagating in the composite structure has been deduced analytically for electrically open and short conditions. Some special cases of the problem have also been studied. It has been found that the obtained results are in well-agreement to the Classical Love wave equation. Significant effects of various parameters viz. irregularity parameter, flexibility imperfectness parameter and viscoelastic imperfectness parameter associated with complex common interface, dielectric constant and piezoelectric coefficient on phase velocity of Love-type wave has been reported. Numerical computations and graphical illustrations have been carried out to demonstrate the deduced results for various cases. Moreover, comparative study has been performed to unravel the effects of the presence of reinforcement and piezoelectricity in the composite structure and also to analyze the existence of irregularity and imperfectness at the common interface of composite structure in context of the present problem which serves as a salient feature of the present study.

  • The filter of hairpin type can be designed small but has a demerit which a design method is complex. This paper suggests the method that a hairpin line filter is designed with applying a transmission line method and J inverter circuit, accurately calculated the J value and the b parameter. It is considered about the line have no the mutual coupling element with next line to each other. is calculated a length of electric coupling line about coupling element in each inverter stage from the J value and the b parameter. In order to show the validity of the proposed design method, band pass filter of small hairpin line is designed at center frequency 2.6 GHz, with Serenade 8.0 software tool and the simulation characteristics are compared with design results.

  • In the ATM networks, there are two method in traffic control as schemes to improve the quality of service; one is the reactive control after congestion and the other is the preventive control before congestion. The preventive control include the CAC(Connection Admission Control), the UPC(Usage Parameter Control), the NPC(Network Parameter Control) and the PC(Priority co ntrol). In this paper, we propose an efficient UPC algorithm that has a complex structure using the Jumping window algorithm within the Leaky Bucket algorithm. The proposed algorithm controls peak hit rate by the Leaky Bucket algorithm, then it does the traffic control to evaluate by the Jumping Window whether violates mean bit rate or not. As we assume On/Off traffic source model, our simulation results showed cell loss rate less than the pre-existential Leaky Bucket algorithm method, and it could decrease the demanded Bucket size.

  • Zirconium is used in nuclear reactors as a structural material due to its excellent corrosion resistance and to low neutron crosssection. Variation in the distribution and solubility of Zr(IV) with solution pH was obtained. Distribution of Zr(IV) containing species in HCl and $HNO_3$ solution was analyzed by considering the complex formation of Zr(IV) species with the anion of the inorganic acid. Bromley interaction parameter between $ZrO^{2+}$ and nitrate ion was estimated by using the reported data on the solvent extraction of Zr(IV) by Cyanex272 from $HNO_3$ solution. This Bromley parameter can be utilized in calculating extraction isotherm of Zr(IV) and in predicting the separation factor between Zr(IV) and Hf(IV).

  • An inverse finite element (FE) model parameter estimation algorithm can be used to characterize mechanical properties of biological tissues. Using this algorithm, we can consider the influence of material nonlinearity, contact mechanics, complex boundary conditions, and geometrical constraints in the modeling. In this study, biomechanical experiments on macro and micro samples are conducted and characterized with the developed algorithm. Macro scale experiments were performed to measure the force response of porcine livers against mechanical loadings using one-dimensional indentation device. The force response of the human liver cancer cells was also measured by the atomic force microscope (AFM). The mechanical behavior of porcine livers (macro) and human liver cancer cells (micro) were characterized with the algorithm via hyperelastic and linear viscoelastic models. The developed models are suitable for computing accurate reaction force on tools and deformation of biomechanical tissues.

  • The traditional design procedure of a prestressed concrete (PC) cable-stayed bridge is complex and time-consuming. The designers have to repeatedly modify the configuration of the large number of design parameters to obtain a feasible design scheme which maybe not an economical design. In order to efficiently achieve an optimum design for PC cable-stayed bridges, a multi-parameter optimization technique is proposed. In this optimization technique, the number of prestressing tendons in girder is firstly set as one of design variables, as well as cable forces, cable areas and cross-section sizes of the girders and the towers. The stress and displacement constraints are simultaneously utilized to ensure the safety and serviceability of the structure. The target is to obtain the minimum cost design for a PC cable-stayed bridge. Finally, this optimization technique is carried out by a developed PC cable-stayed bridge optimization program involving the interaction of the parameterized automatically modeling program, the finite element structural analysis program and the optimization algorithm. A low-pylon PC cable-stayed bridge is selected as the example to test the proposed optimization technique. The optimum result verifies the capability and efficiency of the optimization technique, and the significance to optimize the number of prestressing tendons in the girder. The optimum design scheme obtained by the application can achieve a 24.03% reduction in cost, compared with the initial design.

  • Selective laser melting(SLM) is one of the powder bed fusion(PBF) processes, which enables quicker production of nearly fully dense metal parts with a complex geometry at a moderate cost. However, the process still lacks knowledge and the experimental evaluation of possible process parameter sets is costly. Thus, this study presents a finite element analysis model of the SLM process to predict the melt pool characteristics. The physical phenomena including the phase transformation and the degree of consolidation are considered in the model with the effective method to model the volume shrinkage and the evaporated material removal. The proposed model is used to predict the melt pool dimensions and validated with the experimental results from single track scanning process of Ti-6Al-4V. The analysis result agrees with the measured data with a reasonable accuracy and the result is then used to evaluated each of the process parameter set.

  • Parameter estimation techniques are discussed for the complex frequency analysis of an electromagnetic scatterer. The paper suggests how the Maximum Likelihood estimation technique can be applied for this purpose. Experiments on hypothetical data sets demonstrate that the Maximum Likelihood technique is better than the Pencil of Functions technique. Although there have been several techniques including MLE suggested as tools of the parameter estimation, the proposed method has strong advantages under the noise-contaminated sample data environment because it uses minimal dimension of system matrix that stands totally independent of the length of extracted data set.

  • Since it is really hard to construct process models based on prior process knowledges, various statistical approaches have been employed to build fault diagnosis models. However, the crucial drawback of these approaches is that the solutions may vary according to the fault magnitude, even if the same fault occurs. In this study, the parameter monitoring approach is suggested. When a fault occurs in a chemical process, this leads to trigger the change of a process model and the monitoring parameters of process models is able to provide the efficient fault diagnosis model. A few important variables are selected and their predictive models are constructed by partial least square (PLS) method. The Euclidean norms of parameters of PLS models are estimated and a fault diagnosis can be performed as comparing with parameters of PLS models based on normal operational conditions. To improve the monitoring performance, cumulative summation (CUSUM) control chart is employed and the changes of model parameters are recorded to identify the type of an unknown fault. To verify the efficacy of the proposed model, Tennessee Eastman (TE) process is tested and this model can be easily applied to other complex processes.
