  • The human skin is constantly exposed to environmental irritants such as ultraviolet, smoke, chemicals. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by these environmen tal facts play critical roles in cellular damage. These irritants are in themselves damaging to the skin structure but they also participate the immensely complex inflammatory reaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skin cell protective effect of Campsis grandiflora extract on the UVB-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). We tested free radical and superoxide scavenging effect in vitro. C. grandiflora extracts had potent radical scavenging effect by 82% at $100{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. For testing intracellular ROS scavenging activity the cultured HDFs were analyzed by increase in DCF fluorescence upon exposure to UVB 20 $MJ/cm^2$ after treatment of C.grandiflora extracts. The results showed that oxidation of CM-DCFDA was inhibited by C.grandiflora extracts effectively and C.grandiflora extracts has a potent free radical scavenging activity in UVB- irradiated HDFs. In ROS imaging using confocal microscope we visualized DCF fluorescence in HDFs directly. In conclusion, our results suggest that C.grandiflora can be effectively used for the prevention of UV-induced adverse skin reactions such as radical production, and skin cell damage.

  • This study was to evaluate the effect of the moisturizing cream containing five kinds of plants extracts for human facial improvements such as hydrating ability, transepidermal water loss and erythema reaction. The antioxidant activities of yellowish natural colorants, extracted from five kinds of plants (Ceramium kondoi, Phellodendron amurense, Carthamus tinctorius, Gardenia jasminoides for. grandiflora and Aphis chinensis) were tested. Twenty-one volunteers were subjected to analyze the effects, and each result was determined by treating the complex cream containing plants extracts on their skin in three times. The moisture content on skin was significantly increased more than 50% by treating the cream containing five kinds of plants extracts. The transepidermal water loss was reduced and the level of the skin erythema reaction was improved after treatment of the complex cream. Survey analysis showed that the volunteers had highly satisfaction on the tested creams. The results suggest that the complex cream containing five plants extracts had an improved effect on facial skin, and therefore can be used as moisturizing ingredients in the related industry.

  • This study investigated the antioxidant effects of complex extracts from pine needles (PN), green tea (GT), and sea buckthorn leaves (SL). Measurement of total polyphenol and flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging activity (DPPH), ABTS+ radical scavenging activity (ABTS), and reducing power (RP), showed that SL extract (SE) had the highest values. The superoxide radical scavenging activity (SSA) and nitrite scavenging activity (NSA) were the highest in the GT extract (GE). In most experiments, the PN extract (PE) showed higher activity in complex extracts than in single extracts. The combination of GT and SL led to a higher activity than that exhibited by GT (DPPH and ABTS at 300 ppm, RP at 100 and 500 ppm) and SL (SSA at 100 ppm and NSA at 300 ppm) alone. These results suggest that the combination of PE, GE, and SE may be a useful functional food material in the food industry.

  • With the wide spread of Web services in various fields, there is a growing interest in building a composite Web service, however, it is very difficult for ordinary users to specify how to compose services. Therefore, a convenient interface for generating and invoking composite Web services are required. This paper proposes a natural language interface to invoke services. The proposed interface provides a way to describe users' requests for composite Web Services in a natural language. A user with no technical knowledge about Web services can describe requests for composite Web services through the proposed interface. The proposed method extracts a complex workflow and finds appropriate Web services from the requests. Experimental results show that the proposed method extracts a sophisticated workflow from complex sentences with many phrases and control constructs.

  • This paper presents an improved Snake algorithm that contains additional energy term related to adjacent edges. The suggested algorithm represents the distance between an adjacent edge and the current cell as energy, and extracts object contours more effectively by including the energy tenn to the whole energy function. The adjacent edge-based snake algorithm not only make it possible to detect object boundaries which are concave, but also can detect the boundaries of complex objects without weight adjustment. Experimental results show that the proposed method extracts object boundaries more accurately than other existing methods without loss of speed.

  • In general, stepwise hot steaming process is known to be effective in improving its biological activities; however, not much employed in processing Codonopsis lanceolata due to its hardness. The complex processed C. lanceolata showed highest free radical scavenging acitivity as 45.21%. Total phenol and flavonoid content were of complex processed C. lanceolata higher than conventional extract and alone steaming process. It was showed the lower melanogenesis rate on melanin production test by B16F10 cells as 27.46%. High inhibitory of tyrosinase was also measured as 28.61% by adding steamed Codonopsis lanceolata extracts by high pressure extraction of 1.0 $mg/m{\ell}$. And anti-wrinkle activity were 39.08%. In comparing phenolic acids profiles in the extract, in general higher amounts of polyphenol were obtained possibly by easy release of active components during thermal processing, which results in better antioxidant activities than that of general extract. This findings can also be supported by result that the extract by steaming process showed better activities than the general extraction extract.

  • Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) causes bacterial wilt, and it is one of the most important soil-borne plant pathogenic bacteria. RSSC has a large host range of more than 50 botanical families, which represent more than 200 plant species, including tomato. It is difficult to control bacterial wilt due to following reasons: the bacterial wilt pathogen can grow inside the plant tissue, and it can also survive in soil for a long period; moreover, it has a wide host range and biological diversity. In most previous studies, scientists have focused on developing biological control agents, such as antagonistic microorganisms and botanical materials. However, biocontrol attempts are not successful. Plant-derived metabolites and extracts have been promising candidates to environmentally friendly control bacterial wilt diseases. Therefore, we review the plant extracts, essential oils, and secondary metabolites that show potent in vivo antibacterial activities (in potted plants or in field) against tomato bacterial wilt, which is caused by RSSC.

  • Hispidin is a secondary metabolite found in numerous medicinal mushrooms that has attracted significant attention, owing to its distinct biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and cytoprotective properties. Experiments are being carried out to study the interaction of detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) with synthetic and natural hispidin sourced from extracts of Pholiota sp. fungus. The bioluminescence method is used to determine the adsorption/desorption properties of DNDs toward hispidin. It is found that hispidin forms strong conjugates with DNDs, and the use of various eluents does not result in a significant release of the adsorbed hispidin molecules. DND-bovine serum albumin (BSA) complex, where DNDs serve as a carrier for the protein and the latter acts as a hispidin sorbent, has been developed and applied in hispidin adsorption/desorption tests. The results support the use of the DNDs as a carrier for hispidin in medical applications. They also advocate the application of the DND-BSA complex for isolating the substance from fungal extracts.

  • The in-vitro eliminative effects of against three types of herbal extract and formalin Ichthyophthirius multifiliis were examined. All parasites were killed within one hour after exposure to the 500 fold dilution of the complex herb extract whereas the 10 fold dilution of the fertilized solution of Salvia plebeia R. Br. killed all parasites within one hour after exposure. The 5,000 fold dilution of the extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves killed all parasites within one hour after exposure. As a comparative agent, formalin killed all parasites within one hour at 100 ppm. As the results, the extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves extracts have the most eliminative ability against the parasite. No differences were found among different parasite density in eliminative effects of the three types of herbal extracts and formalin. Also there were no changes in the fish gill tissues after exposure for two hours to the 5,000 fold dilution of the extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves.
