  • In this paper, an Active Power Filter (APF) is implemented using a dSPACE DS1104 processor to compensate harmonics and reactive power produced by nonlinear load. The reference source current is computed based on the measurement of harmonics in the supply voltage and load current. A hysteresis based current controller has been implemented in a DSP processor for injecting the compensating current into the power system, so that APF allows suppression of the harmonics and reactive power component of load current, resulting in a supply current that is purely sinusoidal. Simulation and experimental results of the proposed APF to meet the IEEE-519 standards are presented.

  • The load of electric railroad can generate voltage fluctuation in the electric railway system because of high speed of the electric railroad and frequent movement and stop. This voltage fluctuation of electric railway system can cause not only voltage imbalance but also harmonic in the utility grid. Therefore the electric railroad system is in need of the reactive power compensation, such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static var compensator (SVC). Especially, the battery energy storage system (BESS) can control the real and reactive power at the same time. In this paper, the electric railway system using BESS has been modeled to show its voltage compensation effect using Matlab/Simulink.

  • For a shunt power quality controller (SPQC) the DC side voltage value which is closely related to the compensation performance is a significant parameter. Buy so far, very little discussion has been conducted on this in a quantitative manner by previous publications. In this paper, a method to design the DC side voltage of SPQC is presented according to the compensation performance in the single-phase system and the three-phase system respectively. First, for the reactive current and the harmonic current compensation, a required minimal value of the DC side voltage with a zero total harmonic distortion (THD) of the source current and a unit power factor is obtained for a typical load, through the equivalent circuit analysis and the Fourier Transform analytical expressions. Second, when the DC side voltage of SPQC is lower than the above-obtained minimal value, the quantitative relationship between the DC side voltage and the THD after compensation is also elaborated using the curve diagram. Hardware experimental results verify the design method.

  • In practice, not only the load current but also the load voltage may contain asymmetric and harmonic components. Instantaneous power using p-q theory is analyzed to have compensation of reactive power, harmonics and asymmetry at the same time. In this paper, the limitation of p-q theory by using only shunt or series active filter is analyzed. A new scheme is proposed to solve the above issues.

  • This paper discusses a transformerless shunt static compensator (STATCOM) based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC). It introduces a new time-discrete appropriate current control algorithm and a phase-shifted carrier modulation strategy for fast compensation of the reactive power and harmonics, and also for the balancing of the three-phase source side currents. Analytical formulas are derived to demonstrate the accurate mechanism of the stored energy balancing inside the MMC. Various simulated waveforms verify that the MMC based STATCOM is capable of reactive power compensation, harmonic cancellation, and simultaneous load balancing, while controlling and balancing all of the DC mean voltages even during the transient states.

  • This paper presents a new control method of single-phase active power filter (APF) for the compensation of harmonic current components in nonlinear loads. To facilitate the possibility of complex calculation for harmonic current detection of the single phase, a single-phase system that has two phases was constructed by including an imaginary second-phase giving time delay to the load current. The imaginary phase, which lagged the load current T/4 (Here T is the fundamental cycle) is used in the conventional method. But in this proposed method, the new signal as the second phase is delayed by the filter. Because this control method is applied to a single-phase system, an instantaneous calculation was developed by using the rotating reference frames synchronized to source-frequency rather than by applying instantaneous reactive power theory that uses the conventional fixed reference frames. The control scheme of single-phase APF for the current source with R-L loads is applied to a laboratory prototype to verify the proposed control method.

  • Modern power grids are becoming more and more stressed with the load demands increasing continually. Therefore large stressed power systems exhibit complicated dynamic behavior when subjected to small disturbance. Especially, it is needed to analyze special conditions which make small signal stability structure varied according to operating conditions. This paper shows that the relation between small signal stability structure varied according to operating conditions. This paper shows that the relation between small signal stability and operating conditions can be identified well using node-focus point and 1:1 resonance point. Also, the weak point which limits operating range is found by the analysis of resonance condition, and it is shown that reactive power compensation may solve the problem in the weak points. The proposed method is applied to test systems, and the results illustrate its capabilities.

  • Many developing countries has been voltage unstable and the inter- change capability in Korea is limited by voltage instability. In analyzing voltage stability, load model has been considered as constant power, but actual loads vary as voltage changes. In order to incorporating voltage-dependent load model. we need the low-side of P-V curve that can not be obtained by general load flow algorithm. This paper proposes a modified GCF algorithm to obtain a full low-side of P-V curve and a accurate voltage assessment index considering load model. 5-bus sample system and 19-bus real power system are applied to simulate the proposed GCF. Also. the effect of reactive power compensation is illustrated in same systems.
