  • In performing the three-level SVPWM, it is nearly impossible to control the neutral-point potential exactly to the half of the dc-link voltage at all times. Therefore the inverter would produce an erroneous output voltage by this voltage unbalance. So the voltage unbalance has to be compensated in doing PWM, when the voltage unbalance occurs whether it is small or large, to make the inverter output voltage follow the reference voltage exactly the same. In this paper, a new compensating method for the neutral-point potential variation in a three-level inverter space vector PWM (SVPWM) is presented. By using the proposed method, the output voltage of the inverter can be made same as the reference voltage and thus the current and torque ripple of the inverter driven motor can be greatly improved even if the voltage unbalance is quite large. The proposed method is verified experimentally with a 3-level IGBT inverter.

  • In this paper, we address the tracking problem caused by camera motion and rolling shutter effects associated with CMOS sensors in consumer handheld cameras, such as mobile cameras, digital cameras, and digital camcorders. A modified particle filtering method is proposed for simultaneously tracking objects and compensating for the effects of camera motion. The proposed method uses an elastic registration algorithm (ER) that considers the global affine motion as well as the brightness and contrast between images, assuming that camera motion results in an affine transform of the image between two successive frames. By assuming that the camera motion is modeled globally by an affine transform, only the global affine model instead of the local model was considered. Only the brightness parameter was used in intensity variation. The contrast parameters used in the original ER algorithm were ignored because the change in illumination is small enough between temporally adjacent frames. The proposed particle filtering consists of the following four steps: (i) prediction step, (ii) compensating prediction state error based on camera motion estimation, (iii) update step and (iv) re-sampling step. A larger number of particles are needed when camera motion generates a prediction state error of an object at the prediction step. The proposed method robustly tracks the object of interest by compensating for the prediction state error using the affine motion model estimated from ER. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional particle filter, and can track moving objects robustly in consumer handheld imaging devices.

  • Voltage fluctuation, also known as flicker, is a power quality problem caused by nonlinear loads like electric arc furnace. Since it is interpreted as a variation of the supplied electrical energy, it causes the residential customers to feel much annoyed visually through the lamps. Due to the statistical nature of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) short-term flicker severity index, Pst, it is not feasible to pre-evaluate the flicker level using the transient power system simulators such as Sim Power System in Matlab/Simulink. So this paper presents not only how to design the Matlab/Simulink IEC flickermeter to yield the Pst value, which considering electric distribution environments of South Korea, but also how to mitigate the voltage flicker at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). In order to achieve this, the flicker mitigation efficiencies of various compensating devices, such as Static Var Compensator (SVC), STATCOM will be applied and compared. The simulated result demonstrates which compensating equipment is the most efficient method to mitigate the flicker phenomenon.

  • This paper describes a compensation method for the rotor resistance variation of induction machines in speed sensor-less vector control system using MRAS(model reference adaptive system). In case of rotor resistance variation, the analysis of the conventional speed sensor-less vector control system using MRAS is presented and the compensation method for rotor resistance variation using Fuzzy logic is proposed. In order to confirm the performance of the proposed algorithm, computer simulation is performed.

  • This paper presents a novel design method for determining the PID gains of a speed controller for a servo system compensating variations in bandwidth at a low speed. The variations in bandwidth of a speed controller are measured at a low speed and the relationship between the bandwidth and the damping ratio are verified by determining the location of the closed loop pole. The proposed algorithm uses the z-transform of a plant and speed controller and applies the time-varying sampling method for determining the PID gains of the speed controller at low speed. The magnitude and the phase condition are considered for finding a suitable control gain. The usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through experimental results such as low speed control and robust disturbance responses.

  • An ultrasonic self-calibrating technique for the characterization of a ceramic which was fabricated by change pressing time during the HIP process has been applied by using the ratio of the reflection and transmission coefficients of normal incidence longitudinal waves. The ratio is self-compensated, in that it is independent of the characteristics for transmission and reception of ultrasound by the transducer and the condition of the couplant. The insensitive direction in parameter space is defined as the direction in which the variation of the ratio to changes of two parameters vanishes. For inverse problem the distribution of minima in an error surface is investigated.

  • In this paper, the method is proposed that the equivalent result can be obtained by compensating the variation of gain and phase in the comparison with the result of near-field measurement which is obtained in the steady state, although the gain and phase variation of rx-channels occurred in the near-field rx-measurement of digital active phased array antenna. The proposed concept has the time section for monitoring the state of the rx-channels through the calibration path in the measurement timeline, and is the method for compensating the variation of state. For validating the proposed method, the fabricated X-band digital active phased array antenna and the planar near-field measurement facility is utilized. The proposed method is validated in the comparison with the compensated pattern which the unstable state of rx-channels is calibrated and the reference pattern obtained under the steady state of the rx-channels.

  • A new control scheme is proposed suitable for the three phase PWM converter having abrupt load variation such as a crane. In the converter used in a crane, the peak value of source voltage varies instantaneously due to the abrupt load variations. Such a voltage variation degrades the performance of DC-link control of PWM converter. To overcome this problem, load variations should be detected and compensated properly. We propose a new method for detecting and compensating the load variations without the additional hardware. With the proposed scheme, load variations are detected by estimating the current of DC-link capacitor. The estimated current information is feedbacked to a current controller to improve the performance. Additionally, the variation of source voltage is compensated using feedforward controller. The performance of the proposed scheme has been verified through simulations.

  • This paper presents a new power control method for compensating the short term fading of the reverse link channel in the CDMA mobile telephone system. The fixed step closed loop power control which is now adopted in IS-95, is very simple in structure. However, the step size in the closed loop power control is too big for the channel with a small variation or too big for the channel with a small variation or too small for the channel with a large variation. The method presented in this paper has a simple structure and shows a new model employing the combination of the fixed step size method and variable step size method which results in compensatingthe disadvantages mentioned above. This paper also evaluates the performance inthe fundamental channel model.

  • In many control fields high position performance is essentially required in reducing the over-shoot phenomena which is produced by improving the quick response in starting and in minimizing the variation of the response characteristic on disturbance and load variation In this paper, the design method for a position control is suggested for constructing the PI-PD controllers by using an internal PD feedback loop in PI and PD control system. Applying this method to the position control system used a DC servo motor as a driver, the transfer PI and PD controllers are designed simultaneously and the coefficients of these controllers are determined by using the transfer function of a plant and a proportional coefficient from mathematical technique. From the result of computer simulation in PI-PD control system by applying this control technique, we can verify the usefulness of this method in rejecting of over-shoot of starting, compensating of response variation on the load variation, and shorting the settling time.
