Relation of Compassionate Competence to Burnout, Job Stress, Turnover Intention, Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment for Oncology Nurses in Korea

  • Background: Nursing focuses on the development of an empathic relationship between the nurse and the patients. Compassionate competence, in particular, is a very important trait for oncology nurses. The current study sought to determine the degree of compassionate competence in oncology nurses, as well as to determine the relationships between compassionate competence, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, degrees of job satisfaction, and organizational commitment in oncology nurses. Materials and Methods: A descriptive correlational study evaluating the relationships between compassionate competence, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, degrees of job satisfaction, and organizational commitment in 419 oncology nurses was conducted between January 30 and February 20, 2015. Results: The average score of compassionate competence for oncology nurses in the current study was higher than for clinical nurses. Conclusions: The correlational analysis between compassionate competence and organizational commitment, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, and degree of job satisfaction revealed a high correlation between compassionate competence and positive job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Conclusions: Compassionate competence was higher in oncology nurses than in nurses investigated in previous studies and positively correlated with work experience. Job satisfaction and organizational commitment in nurses may be improved through compassionate competence enhancement programs that employ a variety of experiences.

The Relationship between End-of-Life Care Stress, Compassionate Competence and Job Satisfaction amomg Nurses Caring for Cancer Patients (암 환자를 돌보는 간호사의 임종간호 스트레스, 공감역량 및 직무만족도의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe end-of-life care stress, compassionate competence, and job satisfaction among nurses caring for cancer patients and to identify the relationship between variables. Methods: The participants comprised 141 nurses at the D cancer center in Busan metropolitan city. Data were collected from October 14 to the 31, 2022. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 29.0 program. Results: There was a significantly positive correlation between a participnat's job satisfaction and compassionate competence (r=.45, p<.001), and end-of-life care stress (r=.42, p<.001). Conclusion: Compassionate competence and end-of-life care experience among nurses caring for cancer patients are factors that influence job satisfaction. A program that can improve compassionate competence should be developed to improve job satisfaction.

The Mediating Effect of Compassionate Competence on the Relationship between Nurses' Spirituality and Attitude toward Care of Dying Patients (일 종합병원 간호사의 영성과 임종간호태도와의 관계에서 공감역량의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effect of compassionate competence on the relationship between nurses' spirituality and attitude toward care of dying patients. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational research design was conducted. The total subjects were 172 nurses at one general hospital in Gangwon-do. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Compassionate competence showed the mediating effect (${\beta}=.19$, p=.025) on the relationship between nurses' vertical spirituality and attitudes toward care of dying patients. However, no mediating effect of compassionate competence on the relationship between nurses' horizontal spirituality and attitudes toward care of dying patients was found. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, development of training programs with a focus on spirituality and compassionate competence was highly recommended to improve and maintain nurses' positive attitudes toward caring of the dying patients.

The Relationships of End-of-life Care Stress with Compassionate Competence and Attitudes toward End-of-life Care among Pediatric Nurses

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data for developing interventions to relieve the end-of-life care stress experienced by pediatric nurses by examining the relationships of end-of-life care stress with compassionate competence and attitudes toward end-of-life care. Methods: Data were collected via a survey that was conducted from September 10 to September 30, 2018 and administered to 113 nurses who had worked for more than 6 months in a pediatric unit at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, South Korea. The data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS version 25.0. Results: End-of-life care stress among pediatric nurses had a weak positive correlation (r=0.216, P<0.05) with compassionate competence and had no significant correlation with attitudes toward end-of-life care. Among the sub-factors of end-of-life care stress, psychological difficulties had a weak positive correlation with sensitivity (r=0.309, P<0.01) and communication (r=0.230, P<0.05), which are aspects of compassionate competence. Lack of knowledge about end-of-life care had a weak positive correlation with communication (r=0.209, P<0.05) as an aspect of compassionate competence. Conclusion: To improve the quality of end-of-life care provided by pediatric nurses, it is necessary to improve their compassionate competence and reduce their end-of-life care stress by developing education and support programs tailored to the characteristics of children and specific communication methods.

Factors Influencing the Communication Behavior of nurses caring for people with Dementia: Focused on the compassionate competence and Burnout (치매대상자를 돌보는 간호사의 의사소통행위 영향요인: 공감역량과 소진을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of nurse's compassionate competence and burnout on their communication behavior with dementia patients. The subjects of this study were 190 nurses who were taking care of patients with dementia at long-term care hospitals and who agreed with the survey. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and multiple regression. The communication behavior of nurses caring for dementia patients was found to have a significant correlation with compassionate competence and burnout. Multiple regression analysis showed that nurses' compassionate competence and burnout affected communication behavior, and the total explanatory power was 31%. It is suggested that the results of this study can be used as basic data for developing programs to improve communication behavior with patients with dementia.

A Concet Analysis of Psychiatric Nurse's Compassionate Communication Competence: Hybrid Model (혼종모형을 이용한 정신 간호사의 공감적 의사소통역량 개념분석)

  • This study was analyzed using a mixed methods approach to clarify the concept of compassionate communication competencies of psychiatric nurses. In the theoretical phase, the literature published from 2000 to 2022 was collected and 38 articles were analyzed. For the fieldwork phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight psychiatric nurses from December 1 to December 28, 2022. In the final analysis phase, the dimensions and attributes of psychiatric nurses' compassionate communication competence were identified and conceptualized. Based on the attributes identified in the theoretical and fieldwork phases, the definition of psychiatric nurses' compassionate communication competence was synthesized into five dimensions and 12 attributes. Therefore, psychiatric nurses' compassionate communication competence refers to the skills and abilities of psychiatric nurses to use active listening and empathic skills for effective communication based on compassion and understanding of the target, to be sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of the target, to accurately convey what the target wants to express, to respect the target, and to empower the target.

Influence of Communication Competence and Compassionate Competence on Academic Self-efficacy of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 의사소통 능력과 공감역량이 학업적 자기효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is a descriptive study to investigate the effects of communication competence and compassionate competence on academic self-efficacy of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 131 nursing students and the data collection was from November 5 to 30, 2018. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Significant relationships were found among communication competence and compassionate competence and academic self-efficacy. Motivation for admission, adaptation of nursing, participation on practice and compassion competence were found to academic self-efficacy. Therefore, in order to increase the academic self-efficacy it is necessary to make efforts to increase the participation on practice and to improve compassion competence as a strategy to increase academic self-efficacy of nursing students.

Effects of Executive Compassion and Forgiving Behavior on Organizational Activities and Performance (중소기업에서 경영자의 배려와 용서가 학습조직 활동과 조직성과에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose - Currently, strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in terms of competitiveness is a key economic issue. However, the problem is that many SMEs lack the internal competence required to cope with a rapidly changing market structure. Such problems can act as an obstacle to economic development, yet most SMEs in Korea are dealing with this problem today. A company's source of competitive advantage is changing from quantity to quality, facility to knowledge, and hardwork to creativity. Under such circumstances, a company should place learning and sharing of knowledge and continuously creating new knowledge as its priority. This study aims to identify the effect of a chief executive officer's (CEO) compassion and forgiveness - positive factors in organizational emotion - on learning organization activities and organizational performance, through a theoretical comparison. Research design, data, and methodology - For this study, SMEs based in Daejeon and Chungcheong area were selected. To secure credibility of the data, the subjects were selected among those who have been working at the business for six months or longer. The survey was conducted for 30 days from March 5, 2015 to April 5, 2015. Both offline and online surveys were conducted. Fifty companies were chosen and 700 questionnaires were distributed, with 506 used for analysis. Fifty subject companies (25 from Daejeon, 10 from Chungnam, 10 from Chungbuk, and five from Sejong) were selected and the objective, target, and survey content were explained to a manager at each company either face-to-face or on the phone. Of the total of 700 questionnaires distributed via mail or e-mail, 78.6% or 550 copies were returned. Excluding 44 insufficient questionnaires, the remainder, 506 questionnaires, were used for analysis. Results - This study analyzed how the CEO's compassion and forgiveness affects learning organization activities and organizational performance. First, compassion of the CEO at the SMEs directly affected the learning organization activities and indirectly affected the organizational performance. Second, forgiveness of the CEO at the SMEs did not affect the learning organization activities and organizational performance directly or indirectly. Conclusions - The study conclusions are as follows. First, CEO compassionate behavior at the SMEs was a significant variable that directly and indirectly affected learning organization activities and organizational performance. Therefore, the CEO of an SME can create a positive organizational atmosphere through compassionate behaviors in the organization. Second, the forgiving behavior of the CEO did not have direct or indirect effects on learning organization activities and organizational performance. However, the reason for a CEO to continue his or her forgiving behavior is because it strengthens employee resilience, commitment, and self-efficacy to protect the organization from negative influences such as layoffs, risks, and wrongdoings. The action of forgiveness does not have direct or indirect effects. However, the CEO shall continue such behavior to strengthen members' physiological resilience, commitment, and self - effectiveness, and to protect the organization from risks including layoff and external negative factors.

  • The aim of this paper is to establish the theoretical foundation on "the integrative study of the character education for the promotion of social and emotional competencies of children.". Based on the social and emotional learning(SEL), this paper is tried to find out the effective ways to develop children's good character. According to SEL, social and emotional competence is the ability to understand, manage, and express the social and emotional aspects of one's life in ways that enable the successful management of life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, solving everyday problems, and adapting to the complex demands of growth and development. And it is also the process of acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to recognize and manage emotions. Five key competencies such as self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, self-management, relationship skills are taught, practiced, and reinforced through SEL programming. Both the social and emotional learning movement and the character education share in common the idea that much of human character can be modified for the better through learning. While character educators engage in developing civic virtue and moral character in our youth for more compassionate and responsible society, SEL educators engage in educating for a safe, secure, caring society. To effectively teach social and emotional competencies, the teachers themselves must embrace a teaching and learning philosophy that models the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors we aim to teach.
