  • There is a little agreement about the characteristics of the company town proposed by the Federation of the Korean Industries(FKI). So the purpose of this study is to figure out the FKI's company town, It is begun with the history and the characteristics of the Western company town and the company town of Japanese type. The process of the company town issue from the first proposal of the FKI is examined. Particularly, the definitions, the examples and the expected effects of the company town in the reports supporting the FKI's proposal are explored. Western company town could be characterized by the economic simplicity and the important role of single firm for supply of jobs, houses, etc. In the light of the results of this study, the FKI's company town was based on the western company town especially in definition, influenced by the company town of Japanese type and then identified with industrial clusters. Consequently there is some disaccordance among the definitions, the examples and the expected effects of the FKI's company town. Giving shape to the FKI's company town project in desirable way, it should be developed in small scale at first, with many related enterprises and public institutions to meet their spatial demand and in related with the other new town projects, for example, future innovative city and innovative cluster.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze characteristics of Gangwon Innovation City and Wonju Company Town. Both were created with similar purpose, place, time, and scale. However, they were created with different approaches: relocating public institutions and attracting private institutions. For research data, population microdata provided by the National Statistical Office were used. As a result of the analysis, the Gangwon Innovation City and the Wonju Company Town greatly influenced the population growth of Wonju and the movement of the population within Wonju. The influx of population into the study area brought positive changes in both demographic structure and population indices. Excluding relocation to Wonju-si, Innovation Cities and Company Town accounted for more than 50% of those who migrated from the metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon). The supply of apartment houses (apartments) in the Innovation City and the Company Town stimulated the transfer from the inside of Wonju to this area. For households that moved to Gangwon Innovation City and Wonju Company Town, the most common reasons for moving in were housing, occupation, and family.

  • The Seoul Housing Corporation pronounced an alternative design competition and a bidding for Eunpyeong New Town in December of 2004. At first many construction companies were interested in the first New Town Project. But at last a few companies had proposed the alternative design and construction cost. This project needed a conjunction of design ideas and technology know-hows. And the client wanted the brand power of construction company. Ultimately the Corporation hoped that the first New Town Project will end up with high quality successfully. This competition had started with the original construction drawings. Then it needed some alternative ideas and the lowest cost. There were two drawings of non changeable part and changeable part. Non changeable parts are structure like housing unit plan, underground parking lots. Changeable parts are outdoor layout, interior design and building facade. So we tried all ideas of landscape technology and design principles within limited guidelines. The author applied new technology like tilted rooftop greening and sustained container greening on high-rise apartment house. This green technology will be the first trial in Seoul and in the world as well. Daewoo Corporation have accumulated greening technology through the researches by national funding since 2002. Through this New Town Project the green technology will go forward step by step.

  • This paper is concerned with the energy absorption efficiency of auto-body side structures for the conventional steel and 60TRIP high strength steel. In order to evaluate the energy absorption efficiency, the dynamic crash analysis is carried out with the regulation of US-SINCAP. The analysis adopts the Johnson-Cook model for the dynamic material properties, which have been obtained from dynamic material tests. For the sake of the dynamic material properties, the analysis has been accurately peformed for the crashworthiness assesment. The analysis result provides deformed shapes, amounts of penetration and accelerations at several important points during crash. The result confirms that 60TRIP greatly improves the crashworthiness of the side members without sacrificing the weight and thus can be used for the light-weight design of an auto-body.

  • Under a knowledge-based economy, regional innovation policies have been treated as important regional policies. In this paper, the author attempts to argue the possibilities and problems for regional innovation in Japan. For this purpose, the author has investigated the development of industry-academy-government collaboration in Ube City which has been designated as one of a number of knowledge cluster projects by the National Government. Ube City is a typical company town and the regional system had been characterized by the vertical relationship between a core company and it's subcontractors. Since the late 19905, the local national university has played an important role to promote cooperation with various types of enterprises, research institutions, and local governments. As such horizontal relationships have become more influential, it is necessary to overcome the gap in interest and knowledge base between the core company and the local university.

  • This paper analyses recent regional development policies being carried out in Japan and the U.S. Such policies are formed on the sustainability principle aiming at the realization of circula-flow economy and zero waste society. The study here illuminates Japan's Eco-town project and three cases of eco-industrial developments in Minnesota. Such projects have gone from improving industry competitiveness through constructing clean production systems on the company level to improving national competitiveness through constructing a 'circular society' on the government level. Japan included the realization of a 'circular society' as its government's top agenda because it recognized that environmental pollution stems from the inefficient use of natural resources. Eco-town project is a regional development policy specifically reflecting such recognition. The eco-efficiency based city development approaches in Minnesota are but small examples of the new wave in regional development in the developed countries. We need to go beyond emphasizing eco-friendly and ethical management to just the companies. The government itself needs to design national policies based on environmental sustainability.

Onishi, one of authors, took part in this educational program. She is studying environmental conservation at the university and is interested in environmental conservation activities led by residents. Striking a balance between environmental conservation and human economic activities is seen as important to society. However, the continuing in environmental conservation activities is difficult. Therefore, collaborative activities attract attention as a way of the continuing in environmental conservation activities. A person called "co-coordinator" is a key to make many people to participate in the sustainable collaboration activities. The main role of co-coordinator is connecting people who are interested in environmental conservation activities. The purpose of joining in environmental conservation activities is different from person to person depending on where they belong to or where they live. Onishi took part in the educational program to learn the techniques of adjusting the differing interests. She did her internship at environmental consulting company in Kamikatsu town, Tokushima prefecture. She participated in several environmental conservation activities and work experience as a coordinator. Through this experience, she learned not only the technique but also the difficulty of the work. This paper reports the results obtained from her experience.

  • This study was aimed at analyzing the operational efficiency of DPAs(the delivery and pickup agents), which serve as sub-terminals in parcel delivery services, using CCR/BCC models in DEA. The input variables included the number of employees, and the amount of equipment and the operating expenses. The output variable was revenue value. The efficiency for the period from 2014 to 2016 was analyzed. The results revealed that the operational efficiency improved in 2016, compared with 2014, in both CCR and BCC models. According to the benchmarking analysis, DMU 1 and DMU 7 showed higher efficiency in 2016. The inefficiency analysis based on the BCC model showed increased efficiency of all factors in 2016 when compared with 2014. The Malmquist productivity index (MPI) dropped slightly as a result of technical changes and indicated a declining technical efficiency in all DMUs. This study suggests the need for government-led systematic improvement and support for DPAs by providing current insight into the parcel delivery industry and analyzing DPAs' operational efficiency in Korea for the first time. This research performed efficiency analysis of DPAs located in new town of paju and gimpo cities. In future research, comparative study on efficiency analysis including new town, old town area, and other cities are needed.
