Operation Status and Improvement Plan of Continuing Hospitalization Judgement System in Mental Health Review Board (정신보건심판위원회 계속입원치료 심사제도 운영현황 및 개선방안)

  • Background: The recent revision of South Korea's Mental Health Law emphasizes the role of the Mental Health Review Board. For this study, we examined the current status of continuing hospitalization judgement in Mental Health Review Board at the national level and aimed to determine the directions of improvement. Methods: Using a qualitative case study as the research method, we interviewed 30 Mental Health Review Board members and analyzed the results. Results: Each municipality had very different continuing hospitalization judgement methods. In our systematic review, which consisted of document inspection, we identified reliability problems due to limitations in Mental Health Review Board's operating systems, discharge orders, etc. Additionally, continuing hospitalization judgement needs to improve the objectivity, fairness, and effectiveness of their screening examinations. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we suggest policy proposals to improve these systems, such as standardizing examination processes, strengthening on-site inspections, increasing the independence and neutrality of judgment in Mental Health Review Board, building community mental health infrastructures, and establishing integrated management systems.

  • This study aims to understand main contents of the National Mental Health Strategy and changes after mental health reform through the National Mental Health Strategy in Australia, and to find some convergence policy implications on mental health policy in South Korea. The direction of reform has changed considerably over the 20 years that the National Mental Health Strategy has been in place including the National Mental Health Policy(1992, 2008), the National Mental Health Plan(1993~2014), COAG National Action Plan on Mental Health(2006~2011), the Roadmap for National Mental Health Reform 2012-2022. The National Mental Health Strategy has advocated fundamental change in the national spending on mental health, mental health service provision, the expansion of community-based mental health services and care system, NGO, consumer and carer participation in mental health care.

A Call for Community-Based Suicide Prevention in South Korea (한국의 자살예방을 위한 지역공동체 접근)

  • In this paper, we reviewed the community-based approaches to suicide prevention and national strategies for the decrement of suicide rate, and made some suggestions to decrease the suicide rate in South Korea. Until now, efforts to understand and prevent suicide have been pursued singularly by specialized interest groups such as psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health practitioners, and private organizations with little interaction between them, resulting in narrow approaches toward suicide that existed in relative isolation to one another and that have been largely ineffective. To decline the suicide rate in South Korea, the people lived in Korea community ought to have enough knowledge related to suicide and have to cooperate with other people. Through these efforts, Korea community would have established social safety networks to improve the community 's mental health. The most important factor in suicide prevention and declining the suicide rate is reducing the stigma and increase the self-help seeking behaviors associated with suicide and mental health. Therefore, suicide is not an individual problem solved by suicidal patient, but a community's problem solved by community in recognizing, managing and preventing suicide.

Effects of College Student Gambling Experience on the Gambling Problems (대학생의 도박성 게임 경험이 도박문제에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of college student gambling experience on the gambling problems. Methods: The study included 260 students from four-year universities in Seoul and Gangwon Province, and collected data from March 1, 2018 to March 31, 2018. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 23.0. Results: First, gambling experience showed high frequency among males (68.5%), 21 years of age and older (45.5%), boarding house (66.1%), and two or more siblings (40.5%). Second, the gambling problem based on the experience of gambling was statistically significant in academic problem, interpersonal relationship, and gambling control. Third, the mental health of the subjects was highly correlated by interpersonal relationship, gambling recognition and academic problem. Also, academic problem was highly correlated in order of gambling control and interpersonal relationship. Fourth, effects of gambling experience on the gambling problems were identified as gambling control, interpersonal relationships, gambling awareness and mental health. Conclusion: Recognize the seriousness of the gambling problem of college students in order to solve the gambling problem, the government, communities and universities should actively promote the harmful effects of gambling and provide regular mental health. education at universities.

Mental Health Screening in Schools (학생정신건강검진 시범운영사업에 따른 추진방안)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to find the strategies of mental health screening in school. Based on the literature review, we discuss the importance of screening students in schools for mental health problems. Methods: Data from the 2008 Korean Mental Health Screening in Schools(2008-KMHSS) are used to estimate the outline of this screening. We administered the questionnaire for satisfaction of 2008-KMHSS for students(N=1,280), parents(N=2,672), school nurses(N=75), teachers(N=685), district personnels(N=6), and mental health center staffs(N=37). Also we interviewed a part of them by telephone and e-mail. And we reviewed the tools and methods for screening students for emotional/behavioral problems. Results: Mental health screening in schools is a very important, yet worrisome, agenda that is in its very early stages. From the 2008 Korean Mental Health Screening in Schools, 9,588 students(12.9%) needed more evaluation in the first stage. Of these, 6,910(72.1%) completed the second stage screening. In this sample, 1,975(28.6%) utilized the mental health services in school or community. 38.3% of students and 43.7% of their parents notified the 2008-KMHSS. But only 12.1% of students and 10.9% of their parents dissatisfied with the screening. 9.9% of teachers and 22.7% of school nurses dissatisfied with the screening. Among them the school nurses were mostly dissatisfied, and they complained work burden from KMHSS. Mental health center staffs complained similar issues. The Children's Problem-behavior Screening Questionnaire(CPSQ) and Adolescents' Mental-health & Problem-behavior Screening Questionnaire(AMPQ) were compatible to screen students in schools for mental health problems in first stage. Conclusion: Mental health screening in schools needs careful planning and implementation. For successful mental health screening in schools, several elements need to be considered: careful planning, collaboration, staff training, and integrative mental health programs and services in community or schools.

The Effects of Client Violences on the Turnover Intention of Mental Health Social Workers Working in Community Mental Health Centers : Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Job Stress (정신건강증진센터에 종사하는 정신보건사회복지사의 클라이언트 폭력경험이 이직의도에 미치는 영향 : 직무스트레스의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to examine whether the relationship between client violence and turnover intentions is mediated by job stress among community mental health social workers. Data of a sample of 1,429 drawn from a study of nation-wide mental health promotion centers in 2013 was analyzed in order to verify both the direct and mediating effects between client violence, turnover intentions, and job stress. The study found that 67.2%(n=961) of the sample experienced client violences in the workplace. Furthermore, the experience of client violences had a direct effect on turnover intentions and job stress had a partially mediating effect on the relationship between client violence and turnover intentions. Based on the results, implications were discussed to reduce the extent of job stress of mental health social workers and to provide a safer work environment.

Association between self-rated health, health promotion behaviors, and mental health factors among university students: Focusing on the health survey results in a university (대학생의 주관적 건강인지수준과 건강증진행동, 정신건강수준 간의 관련성: 일개 대학의 건강조사를 중심으로)

  • Background & Objectives: Self-rated health has been widely used to evaluate health status and accepted as a subjective measurement of quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the associations between self-rated health, health promotion behaviors, and mental health factors and suggest the approaches to improve health status among university students. Methods: Two thousand six hundred seventy-seven students who had stayed at dormitories on campus participated in the DU health survey by self-reported questionnaire from April 10 to 14, 2017. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of association of self-rated health with health-related factors among male and female students. Results: 38.6% of the respondents reported good self-rated health. Male and first-year students were more likely to report good self-rated health than female and third-year students. There were significant differences in sex, grade, health problems, BMI, sleeping hours, eating breakfast, consumption of fruits and vegetables, physical activity (regular walking, strength exercise, moderate exercise, vigorous exercise), perceived stress, depression, and suicide thought (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although health promotion programs for university students are essential to support their adaptation to campus life and academic achievement, evidence-based health programs to encourage their participation are still insufficient. Therefore, it should establish a campus-based health policy and develop health promotion programs to increase self-rated health levels and prevent mental health problems for university students.

Influencing Factors on Health-related Quality of Life among Japanese Middle-aged Marriage-based Immigrant Women in South Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study

  • Purpose: With the first generation of marriage-based immigrant women in East Asia now reaching their middle or old age, the need to focus investigations on their health-related quality of life has arisen. This study aimed to examine the extent to which physical and mental health, and psychosocial variables can predict health-related quality of life among Japanese middle-aged immigrant women. Methods: This study has a descriptive cross-sectional design. A convenience sample of 197 Japanese middle-aged marriage-based immigrant women from two regions of South Korea were recruited between December 2017 and March 2018. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires on health-related quality of life, menopausal symptoms, depression, perceived health status, disease morbidity, social support, and acculturation. The data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Depression was the strongest predictor of health-related quality of life, followed by perceived health status, social support, and household income. Menopausal symptoms, presence of disease, and acculturation appeared to have no additional impact on participant's health-related quality of life. Conclusion: In times of rapid growth of global migration and the aging of immigrants in new destination countries, nursing interventions and public health policies for aging marriage-based immigrant women should be prioritized to improve their mental health by facilitating social support and disease management. In addition, social and employment policies that can help immigrant women transition to a healthy midlife are needed.

Relationship between Sleep and Mental Health in Middle School Female Students (여중생의 수면과 정신건강의 상호관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep and mental health in middle school female students. Methods: For this purpose, We analyzed the data of 15,477 for middle school female students among the 2016 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey by multiple logistic regression based on the complex sample design. Results: Sleep duration of middle school female students in Korea were significantly associated with perceived stress, depressive experience, and suicidal idea, and subjective sleep satisfaction were significantly associated with perceived stress, depressive experience in results of multiple logistic regression. Conclusion: Sleep duration and subjective sleep satisfaction have a significant impact on the mental health of middle school female students. Therefore, in-depth research and policies to mental health of middle school female students through sleep duration and subjective sleep satisfaction increase are required.

Relations Between Mental Health and Physical Activities of Middle to High School Students (중고등학생의 정신건강과 신체활동과의 관련성)

  • Objective: The study analyzed degrees of participation in physical activities, demographic and sociological characteristics of middle and high school students, and the relations to mental health related factors, based on "Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey." Therefore, the study can be used as preliminary data for establishing mental health promotion plans for youth and setting contents and directions of health education. Methods: The study analyzed the data, collecting from 75,066 middle and high school students, regarding their demographic and sociological characteristics, mental health, and relations to physical activities by using SPSS Win 15.0. Results: 19.1% of the students answered they had seriously contemplated suicide during the past 12 months, and 43.2% said they are usually under enormous pressure. 55.3% answered that academic achievements and the pressure from future paths are major factors of their stress. The students showed noteworthy differences in whether they think about suicide depending on whether the students live with their father or mother. The study found that the students whose parents' levels of education are low, or their academic records are low, or economic conditions are poor are more likely to think about suicide. The students tend to think more about killing themselves if they spend more time sitting to study than being engaged in physical activities, or spend little time walking. And they are more likely to think about committing suicide if they spend little time exercising, or are not engaged in physical activities on the playground or a gym in PE classes.
