  • Air pollution problems are serious and present significant challenges to the engineering research community. EPA's engineering research programs have shifted from a primary focus on $SO_2$ and NOx pollution control to more complex and more difficult problems such as indoor air quality, air toxics, and global climate change. EPA research engineers are working closely with other research organizations in both the private sector and other federal research organizations to identify, evaluate, and develop cost-effective engineering solutions. The APPCE works closely with the EPA regulatory and regional offices to ensure that the best engineering information is utilized to formulate and implement the Agency's environmental protection program.

  • With the help of information and technology development since 2000, there have been increasing number of community forums for communications among future residents through on-line webs after the contracts for purchases have been signed. However, more complaints are being filed since the construction companies take less care of them in the nation. Therefore, a mutual communication system is to be proposed in this paper in order to reduce the complaints in advance due to improper communications, to improve the customer satisfaction, to analyze the troubles for communication, and to provide solutions for better mutual communications

  • Nowadays, the navigation system is very popular to general public and the study of landmarks has an important role to develop the cognitive systems for regional navigation. The city image is composed of landmarks that are well-known to regional community and they are the reference frame for place recognition in urban navigation. In general, the case of navigation can be categorized as two kinds. The first is to explore the new region and the second is to navigate the familiar region. In case of latter, the city image has a critical role in place recognition for regional community. Place recognition of a community might be a knowledge-based inference on the basis of city image which is composed of the systematically connected places. In this study, the mental structure of urban image is regarded as a hierarchical knowledge and represents it as domain ontology for the regional navigation of a community. The city image of a community is assumed as the collection of landmarks, which are categorized as anchor, distant and local according to spatial familiarity of community. Representing city image as a regional knowledge using ontology modeling method is an essential step to make the geographical assumption of a regional community explicit and reusable for the regional agents who will provide the regional guide in LBS age.

  • Limit state design(LSD) principles employing load and resistance factor design(LRFD) are coming into use in geotechnical engineering community around the world. Current working (allowable) stress design principles are expected to be replaced by LRFH method in the near future. North America has recently adopted LRFD principles, and European community has also developed its own code called "Eurocode" based on partial safety factor design which is essentially the same as LRFD. Relevant review and analysis of new global design codes are prerequisites to adopting these codes in the Korean construction industry and in the Korean foundation design prac titre. This paper reviews geotechnical aspects of LRFD and Eurocode, and analyzes the geomaterial resistance factors in LRFD for the design of axially-loaded driven piles.

  • Node cooperation during packet forwarding operations is critically important for fair resource utilization in Community Wireless Mesh Networks (CoWMNs). In a CoWMN, node cooperation is achieved by using fairness protocols specifically designed to detect and isolate malicious nodes, discourage unfair behavior, and encourage node participation in forwarding packets. In general, these protocols can be split into two groups: Incentive-based ones, which are managed centrally, and use credit allocation schemes. In contrast, reputation-based protocols that are decentralized, and rely on information exchange among neighboring nodes. Centrally managed protocols inevitably suffer from scalability problems. The decentralized, reputation-based protocols lacks in detection capability, suffer from false detections and error propagation compared to the centralized, incentive-based protocols. In this study, we present a new fairness protocol management scheme, called Hybrid FPMS that captures the superior detection capability of incentive-based fairness protocols without the scalability problems inherently expected from a centralized management scheme as a network's size and density grows. Simulation results show that Hybrid FPMS is more efficient than the current centralized approach and significantly reduces the network delays and overhead.

  • As a large construction such as highway, dam, reclaimed land etc. increase in number more and more, large amount of fill materials are required. However, it's difficult to obtain it because of environmental problems and economical efficiency. A alternative plan is to utilize a gypsum which is a by-product yielded from chemical plants and verify suitability to use gypsum as fill materials. Therefore, a characteristic of compaction for gypsum is analyzed and construction methods are given regard to this characteristic from construction of dike using gypsum. Based on the results obtained, it is found that moisture of gypsum in compaction should to be more dry side of O.M.C(optimal moisture content) because of sponge phenomenon. When gypsum is used to fill materials, standards of compaction should be decided from laboratory test.

  • The purpose of this study was to define the optimal boxthorn berries washing method for developing the boxthorn berries cleaner. We analyzed the rate of removal of residual pesticides according to washing methods; 1st - habitual washing method, 2nd - drum rotation washing method, 3th - drum rotation and air bubble washing method, 4th - drum rotation and nozzle spray washing method, 5th - drum rotation and air bubble and nozzle spray washing method. A rate of removal of residual pesticides of 88% was detected in the drum rotation and air bubble and nozzle spray washing method, and a rate of 82% was detected in the habitual washing method. The drum rotation and air bubble and nozzle spray washing method appeared to be the best good washing effect compared to the habitual washing method(about 6% compared to 82.0% higher). Clothianidin Triadimefon, Triforine ingredients, the drum rotation and air bubble and nozzle spray washing method efficiency was lower compared to the habitual washing method removal efficiency.
