  • This paper intends to investigate the hierarchical effects of personality variables and values on pro-environmental product purchase and recycling behaviors mediated by 3 factor environmental attitudes. Previous literature review on pro-environmental behaviors has three categories of research trends. The first category generally done during 70's and early 80's is mainly focused on identifying pro-environmental consumer groups. Second stream of studies has focused on the mediating and moderating effects of variables, such as PCE, environmental knowledge, the perceived importance of behavioral consequences etc., on various pro-environmental behaviors. The last and latest trends of literature is focused on hierarchical and interactive effects of variables on behaviors. Following the trends of literature is review of such specific variables as social responsibility, community mindedness, locus of control, values, and environmental attitudes. The result shows that both locus of control and social responsibility have positive effects on two of environmental attitudes, harmony with nature and limits to growth, but community mindedness did not have effects on environmental attitudes. And social belonging value has positive effects on two of environmental attitudes, limits to growth and nature over human, and environmental value has positive effects on the formation of harmony with nature and limits to growth. But self-actualization has negative effects. And it's also suggested the positive effects of environmental attitudes on purchase and recycling behaviors. Specifically, all environmental attitude variables have positive effects on the formation of pro-environmental product purchase and recycling behaviors except in case of the effects of nature over human to recycling. And it's also revealed that pro-environmental product purchase is a preceeding behavior to recycling behavior, which suggest that consumers have to purchase environment friendly and recyclable products in order to engage in effective recycling behavior. Various applications of the results are discussed in the conclusion.

  • There is a increasingly growing emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention and optimum functioning for peaple including the chronically ill and disabled. According as the purpose of the nursing is the promotion of health, the value and belief of heal th within the nursing paradigm need to be defined in every culture. The paradigm components must be explored for meaning given by the aged in their traditional thought and philosophy, The problem addressed by this qualitative study was how the aged recognize value and belief of health, which contribute to the development of Korean nursing theory. Theoretical support for the study was from Leininger's cultural care theory and Korean philosophy and traditional oriented thought. Literature review refers to literature on the aged, health of the aged, and definition and meaning of general health concept. Grounded theory methodology guied the research methodology and analysis to build a substantive theory. The informants were 119 from a variety of social levels and family patterns; traditionally the aged are responsible for the health. The concentrated interviewing period was from may to june, 1995 ; the interviews were done by the researcher with two supporter and most were recorded on audio tape. Result from analysis of base datas follows; The value and belief of health that emerged from the categories and properties were the physical stability, the stability of mind, the stability of mind and body, the smoothness (harmony) of body function, the family concord, and the perfection of self. These values and beliefs of health are affected by the cosmic dual forces thought is based on the Great Absolute, family principle of confucian scholar, and Buddism. Among the values and beliefs of health, family concord is found out Korean culture peculiarities. These values and beliefs are all integrated into the idea of health. The study provided implications for nursing theory research, education, and practice change and development.

  • According to the rapid increase of foreign immigrants, South Korea recently has grown more and more interested in the acceptance of cultural diversity in diverse fields at the whole society. Korea Library Association also has sought the way of multicultural service for foreign immigrants in libraries and many previous researches has suggested those. This paper examines the ways in which small community library functions for foreign immigrants, analyzing on the case of multicultural library located in Wongok-dong, Ansan-si, where about 80% population of residents are foreign immigrants. Ansan multicultural library has two functions in the community. One is the educational place for helping immigrants' settlement and adaptation of South Korea. The other is the cultural place for social integration between immigrants and South Koreans based on mutual understanding and communication. Ultimately this paper shows how values small library in the community has significantly for foreign immigrants.

  • Background: Antibiotics are widely used to treat animals from infections. After fertilizing, antibacterials can remain in the soil while adversely affecting the soil microorganisms. The concentration of oxytetracycline (OTC) in the soil and its effect on the soil microbial community was assessed. To assess the impact of OTC on the soil microbial community, it was added to the soil at concentrations of 50, 150, and 300 mg kg-1 and incubated for 35 days. Results: The concentration of OTC added to the soil decreased from 150 to 7.6 mg kg-1 during 30 days of incubation, as revealed by LC-MS. The deviations from the control values in the level of substrate-induced respiration on the 5th day of the experiment were, on average, 26, 68, and 90%, with OTC concentrations at 50, 150, and 300 mg kg-1, respectively. In samples with 150 and 300 mg kg-1 of OTC, the number of bacteria from the 3rd to 14th day was 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than in the control. The addition of OTC did not affect the fungal counts in samples except on the 7th and 14th days for the 150 and 300 mg kg-1 contaminated samples. Genes tet(M) and tet(X) were found in samples containing 50, 150, and 300 mg kg-1 OTC, with no significant differences in the number of copies of tet(M) and tet(X) genes from the OTC concentration. Conclusions: Our results showed that even after a decrease in antibiotic availability, its influence on the soil microbial community remains.

  • The short-term effects of low-level contamination by heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, and Pb) on the soil health were examined by analyzing soil nematode community in soils planted with tomatoes. For this, the soils were irrigated with five metal concentrations ([1, 1/4, $1/4^2$, $1/4^3$, and 0] ${\times}$ maximum concentrations [MC] detected in irrigation waters near abandoned mine sites) for 18 weeks. Heavy metal concentrations were significantly increased in soils irrigated with MC of heavy metals, among which As and Cu exceeded the maximum heavy metal residue contents of soil approved in Korea. In no heavy metal treatment controls, nematode abundances for all trophic groups (except omnivorous-predatory nematodes [OP]) and colonizer-persister (cp) values (except cp-4-5) were significantly increased, and all maturity indices (except maturity index [MI] of plant-parasitic nematodes) and structure index (SI) were significantly decreased, suggesting the soil environments might have been disturbed during 18 weeks of tomato growth. There were no concentration-dependent significant decreases in richness, abundance, or MI for most heavy metals; however, their significant decreases occurred in abundance and richness of OP and cp-4, MI2-5 (excluding cp-1) and SI, indicating disturbed soil ecosystems, at the higher concentrations (MC and MC/4) of Pb that had the most significant negative correlation coefficients for heavy metal concentrations and nematode community among the heavy metals. Therefore, the short-term effects of low-level heavy metal contamination on soil health can be analyzed by nematode community structures before the appearance of plant damages caused by the abiotic agents, heavy metals.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of presenting basic data bases for conservation and management measures of Ecological and Scenery Conservation Area in Bongsan. The analysis results of the actual vegetation showed that rate of vegetation cover were composed of 72.3% of Robinia pseudo-acacia Forest, 10.7% of Sorbus alnifoila Forest, and Sorbus alnifoila was founded as a dominant woody plant species in the Core Zone of Bongsan Ecological and Scenery Conservation Area. To investigate the vegetation structure of Sorbus alnifolia Community in Bongsan Ecological and Scenery Conservation Area, twelve $100m^2$ sized plots were set up in Bongsan. According to the classification by TWINSPAN, the communities were divided into the three groups of Sorbus alnifolia Community, Pinus koraiensis Community and Robinia pseudo-acacia Community, To analyze annual diameter growth rate for major tree species, nine sample trees from research plots were measured. Expected ages of Sorbus alnifoila trees were 27~37years, Robinia pseudo-acacia trees were 17~26 years, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Prunus sargentii, and Quercus mongolica trees were 27~38 years. As a result, annual diameter growth rates of Robinia pseudo-acacia and Pinus rigida tended to remarkably decreased, Sorbus alnifoila had the wood on inter-specific competition of the woody plant species. Importance values of Sorbus alnifoila in the three layers of Sorbus alnifoila communities were evenly high.

  • We measured net primary productivity, annual accumulation of organic carbon and leaf decomposition of Salix community in the flood plain of the Han River and the Nakdong River. Net primary productivity, annual accumulation of organic carbon of the Salix community were 22.5ton/ha/yr(16.7ton/ha/yr-31.2ton/ha/yr) and 9.7ton C/ha/yr(7.5ton C/ha/yr-14.0ton C/ha/yr) respectively, which showed the highest values among the woody plant communities reported in the Korea. It means that planting Salix in the flood plain of the river is the best way to remove carbon dioxides. The faster leaf decomposition occurred around, under and the herb of Salix community in order. Leaf decomposition rate of Salix was higher than that of mesophytes, but lower than that of hydrophytes.

  • Agricultural reservoirs are important facilities for storing or managing water for the purpose of securing agricultural water, creating and expanding agricultural production bases, and using them to increase agricultural production. In particular, the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) manages agricultural reservoirs scattered across the country, and officially recognizes and distributes hydrological data to increase their public utilization and aims to improve the value of water resources. Data on the water level of agricultural reservoirs are important. However, errors such as missing values and outliners limit utilization of the data in various fields of research and industry. Therefore, water quality data measures should be devised to increase reliability. this study categorized different error types and looked at automatic correction methods to enhance the reliability of the vast hydrological data. In addition, the water level data corrected from errors were compared to the reference hydrologic data through expert judgment in accordance with the quality control procedure, and the most appropriate measures were verified. As KRC manages more agricultural reservoirs than any other institution, the proposed method of efficient and automatic water level data correction in this study is expected to increase the availability and reliability of the hydrological data.
