Korea has experiencing outbreaks of food borne illnesses since school feeding programs had been introduced to students. In order to prevent food borne diseases, preventive measures applicable to Korean school system were reviewed. The conclusions are summarized as follows; 1. Raw materials should be purchased through reliable sources in order to ensure the quality of food stuffs in the aspect of food safety and hygiene. 2. The potential causes of food borne illnesses should be carefully identified and control system should be established in order to monitor critical points. 3. Temperature of refrigeration should be monitored and controled continuously in order to safeguard the quality of foods. 4. National and local governments have to provide adequate equipment and utensils to the food establishments of school systems, and public health authorities have to make evaluation of the facilities periodically. The food handlers should be trained in safe food handling and the ways how to prevent food borne illnesses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of cultural competency and cultural nursing competence educational needs of public health nurses (PHNs) and community health practitioners (CHPs) and to uncover the difference between the two groups. Methods: The subjects of this study were 217 PHNs and 165 CHPs. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, an independent two-sample t-test, the x2 test, one-way ANOVA, and the Scheffé test were used for data analysis. Result: There was no statistically significant difference between the cultural competency of CHPs (4.27±1.00) and that of PHNs (4.10±1.07) which were at a moderate level. Among the subareas, cultural awareness and sensitivity were above average, but cultural skills and knowledge showed relatively low scores. There was no statistically significant difference between the cultural nursing competence educational needs of CHPs (3.85±0.65) and PHNs (3.90±0.70) and these were at a relatively high level. Among the subareas, knowledge of key concepts, cultural communication, and attitudes and skills were above average. Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the need to develop and implement educational programs to enhance the cultural competency of PHNs and CHPs nationwide using various teaching-learning methods.
Purpose: To investigate the behavioural factors of the health promotion for caregivers based on a socio-ecological model. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study using a self administered questionnaire. The survey was conducted in 219 people chosen through convenient sampling between September and December 2008. The collected information included general characteristics, individual, interpersonal, community, policy level. Results: For the statistical analysis, the t-test was used for the health promotion according to the general characteristics and to each level of the socio-ecological model, by assessing the high and low values and dividing them into mean points. The influence elicited by different health promotion factors was determined using the hierarchical multiple regression. At the individual level, the factors influencing health promotion in caregivers included perceived seriousness, perceived benefits, and self efficacy. Social support was important at interpersonal level, and the use of community resource was relevant for the community level. We found no statistically significant factors relating to the policy level. Conclusions: In conclusion, the socio-ecological models seems appropriate for explaining health promotion and its associated factors in caregivers. We suggest that, for caregivers, strategies should be developed for their social support and to offer information about how to use community resources in relation with factors relating to the individual level.
Purpose: This study is conducted to identify the impacts of tax exemption on community benefit, policy, human resource management, and public benefit. Based on the results of analysis, we explore several avenues to raise public benefit that is central to the value of existence of non-for-profit hospitals in Korea. Methodology: Survey was formulated referring to the US IRS tax exemption criteria, Form990/Schedule H, and Korean public hospital criteria. A total of 182 survey responses were collected and used to verify measurement validity and perform reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and path analysis. Findings: The result of this study showed positive relationships among; i) tax development and planning, ii) planning and human resource management, iii) human resource management and policy, iv) policy and community benefit, v) community benefit and public benefit. Practical Conclusion: Tax exemption affects community benefit and public benefit directly as well as indirectly. This implies that expanding tax exemption is likely to improve public benefit mediating community benefit.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association between dental implants and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Data were collected from the baseline survey (2016-2017) of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. The study sample comprised 1115 community-dwelling people aged 70 years to 84 years who had 0-19 natural teeth. Dental implants and natural teeth were identified by panoramic radiography, while the cognitive function was assessed by the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-KC). The association between dental implants and cognitive function was analyzed by multiple linear regression. Sensitivity analysis was performed to test for potential bias. Results: The mean number of natural teeth in the study population was 9.50 (standard deviation [SD], 6.42), and the mean MMSE-KC score was 24.93 (SD, 3.55). In the simple univariate analysis, tooth replacement, age, sex, smoking status, alcohol consumption, body mass index, osteoporosis, number of natural teeth, periodontitis, chewing discomfort, tooth-brushing frequency, education level, monthly household income, participation in economic activity, living alone, and marital status had a significant impact on the association. After adjusting for confounders, the association between dental implants and cognitive function remained significant (B, 0.85; standard error, 0.40; p<0.05). Age, body mass index, periodontitis, tooth-brushing frequency, and education level were also significantly associated with cognitive function. The results of the sensitivity analyses were consistent with those of the primary analysis. Conclusions: Dental implants were associated with cognitive function in older adults living in the community. Dental implants as tooth replacements may play a role in preserving cognitive function.
We examined progress in oral health of Korean 5 year olds children and dental public health infrastructure since the National Health Promotion Plan 2010 Oral Health Objectives were issued. We summarize trends in the prevalence of dental caries and trends in national public oral health program activities and budget. The Oral Health Objectives were achieved in 2006. Oral health in Korean preschool children improved considerably by improving of lifestyle and consumption of fluoride containing toothpaste. Although the number of public oral health center and the budget of oral health education were increased, the impact of public oral health program for preschool children was not influential. New oral health program for infants such as fluoride varnish application and strengthening of existing public oral health program should be performed for continuing improvement of oral health in Korea.

This report is the result of interim evaluation of a health promotion project which was operated by a public health center of K Gu in the year of 2000. It evaluated the aspects of the aim of a project, a target group. and adequacy and appropriateness of a approaching strategy by considering data of public health center's self-evaluation, and guidelines of a group assigned to evaluate the project. The way of evaluation was dividing the project into a colligated evaluation and a evaluation by projects in the aspects of the structure, the procedure. and the result of a result. Through this. a device to improve the health improvement project was derived. The target data for evaluation was the second data and data of self-evaluation, reported data, membership register data of a health management. and interview materials with the people in charge by projects that are all collected as a project management documents. The result of evaluation is stated below. 1. Main purpose of a health promotion project is building a environment of healthy life practicing and providing information through various ways to increase the rate of practicing healthy life. Through overall project. the ultimate purpose and definite purpose were same, however, it was not quite satisfied to offer planning of a time, and a target amount in detailed strategy. As the purpose was to build environment of healthy life practicing. most of the projects had the whole community citizen as a target group. That made difficult to operate detailed projects. so the result was hard to estimate as much as the effort put into it. Also, there were too many kinds of projects and target groups to be equal to by the human source of a health promotion project team. so we were just bent on operating a project. and could not prepare for the evaluation. As the most of former evaluation of public health service was just counting number of the objects, the new way of evaluating a project wasn't familiar to us. so the evaluation of a detailed project cannot be done well. Techniques and advices needed for all of these things weren't offered appropriately. For the forward direction of unfolding project. it is desirable to operate project by selecting focused target and considering a strategy of evaluation as a strategy of reasonable spread. The evaluation of the project became difficult as participation of citizen for it was poor. So, approach strategy that can lead the motivation of community citizen should be derived. 2. For the continuation of a health promotion project, technical assistance system. description of a field in charge, and arrangement of the amount of task should be developed as a central level. Furthermore, as the health promotion project focus on behavioral modification program whose purpose is to lessen dangerous factors. the public health service model which is incorporated with former project should be developed and spread out in the field for the object-centered project plan.

Purpose: This study was performed to identify job competencies and needs for job education perceived by new community health practitioners. Methods: This study used a qualitative research design. Eight new community health practitioners participated in this study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Results: Five job competencies were identified in this study, including primary care, public health management, interpersonal relationship, teaching and counseling, and leadership. The contents of job education that they needed were management of major symptoms and chronic diseases, understanding and prescription of medications, emergency responses and care, management of endemic diseases, planning and management of public health programs, writing official documentsand computer works, and leadership training. The learning methods they preferred were connecting theory and practice, situation- or case-based learning, skill- or practice-based learning, and increased opportunities of clinical practice. Conclusion: The findings of this study provided the direction of job education for new community health practitioners. Job education for new community health practitioners needs to consider the job competencies and educational needs identified in this study.

Objectives: This study was performed to provide the fundamental data available in the field of the elderly health of the low-income bracket by researching and comparing related factors for the assessment of the degree of depression and cognitive function between elderly welfare recipients and non-elderly welfare recipients. Methods: The study subjects, 402 elderly person over 65-year-old in Daejeon were interviewed, during the two-month from May to June 2006, about their general characteristics, depression and cognitive function. Results: elderly welfare recipients was higher than non-elderly welfare recipients in degree of depression on the other hand, in cognitive function is lower. Also, the depression and cognitive function were related with not only socio-demographic characteristics like the age, the degree of education, the presence of spouse or not and the health status but also health behavior characteristics like the sleeping time, the drinking and the exercise. Conclusions: The project of health promotion and programs that can improve the related factors to the depression and cognitive function for elderly welfare recipients should be developed and practiced.

Objectives: This study is based on a visiting oral health care intervention program in the community care. This qualitative study was conducted through in-depth interviews to identify awareness and attitudes regarding intervention program among older adults. Methods: The research team visited the homes of the target older adults and conducted in-depth interviews for approximately an hour using a semi-structured questionnaire. The collected voice recordings were transcribed using Clova Note, and AI program by Naver. Using the 'Word Cloud Generator 3.7' program, words of high importance and interest from interview answers were extracted, visualized, and analyzed. Results: Participating older adults acknowledged that their quality of life related to oral health could be improved by increasing the level of oral health awareness and oral health knowledge through the intervention program. In addition, the older adults indicated that their oral hygiene management ability improved compared to before the intervention through expert oral hygiene management and oral health education. Further, as the level of oral health knowledge increased, so too did satisfaction with the intervention program increase. Conclusions: The intervention program for visiting oral health care showed a positive effect on the awareness and attitude of older adults. Thus, it is suggested that education for continuous competency enhancement of dental hygienists and multidisciplinary education for the improvement of general health and quality of life of older adults should be promoted.
