AnAnalysis on the Parents' Communication Behavior with Their Teen-aged Children for Parent Education (10대 자녀에 대한 부모의 의사소통행위 분석 -부모교육과 관련하여-)

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the parents' communication behavior with their teen-aged child and the effects of the demographic and socio variables on it concerning with the parent education. A sample of 599 teen-aged children was obtained from the elementary, middle and high schools in the city of Seoul. Mean, t-test and F-test were used for data analysis. The major findings can be summurized as follows : The scores of parents' communication behavior are neither high nor low, namely, are not especially desirable. And there are differences in communication behavior by mother's age and schooling, differences in mother's communication behavior by father's age, schooling and occupation, differences in mother's communication behavior by child' sex and age. According to the above findings, it is necessary for all parents with teen-aged children to have the parental communication education, particularly for father with the older child.

Maternal Knowledge of Childcare and Its Effects on Mother-Teacher Communication (어머니의 보육지식과 어머니-교사 의사소통과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal knowledge of childcare and mother-teacher communication. The participants consisted of 240 mothers whose children were enrolled at seven childcare centers in Seoul. Respondents were asked to complete a series of questionnaires reporting the important aspects of their childcare, the frequency of mother-teacher communication, and individual characteristics. Information about childcare's structural and procedural characteristics were obtained through interviews with the directors of those centers. The results indicated that mothers only answered 45.5% of questions correctly, and reported a lack of knowledge about childcare services in their respective centers. In particular, mothers didn't have information about caregivers (e.g, education, year of job experience, license, etc). Actual maternal knowledge was significantly correlated with the length of time which mothers were associated with their childcare and the frequency of mother-teacher communication. In addition, there were significant differences in the maternal knowledge regarding childcare services according to mothers' educational level. The results of this study imply that effective parent education programs are needed for mothers who want to enroll their children in childcare centers.

The Comparative Study on Mother's Rearing Attitude and Communication among Mother and Student between Mobile Phone Addiction Group and Non-addiction Group: Middle School Students (휴대폰 중독군과 비중독군의 어머니의 양육태도와 의사소통 차이비교: 중학생을 대상으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the mother's rearing attitude and communication between mobile phone addiction group and non-addiction group in middle school students. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed with 574 students from 3 middle schools (1 boy school, 1 girl school, 1 coeducation school) at G-city in Gangwon Province. The data was collected from the 10th to 24th of July in 2010. Statistical analysis of the results was carried out by means, frequencies, chi-square, t-test and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in mobile phone addiction group and non-addiction group in regard to sex, school year, grades, mother' age, purpose of mobile phone use, activity after school, phone bill per month. Also There were significant differences in mother's rearing attitude and mother's communication between two groups. Conclusion: Mobile phone addiction among students is not serious, however, possibility of becoming an addict still remains. This study suggests that we have to educate them about proper mobile phone use in advance to prevent them from becoming a mobile phone addict in early stage. Therefore, we need to develop an educational program to prevent mobile phone addiction.

Social Competence : Effect of Mother's Facilitative Communication and Child's Emotional Intelligence (어머니의 촉진적 의사소통과 아동의 정서지능이 사회적 유능성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of mother's facilitative communication and child's emotional intelligence on social competence. Subjects were 474 students in the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ grades of two elementary schools located in Seoul. Data were analyzed by the SAS statistics program. Findings were that mother's facilitative communication has an effect on child's social competence and on emotional intelligence. Higher perception of child's own emotional ability was associated with higher sociability, social participation and leadership. Increased perception of the emotional ability of others was associated with higher sociability, interpersonal adjustment, social participation, leadership, and popularity.

Factors Influencing Headache in Children (아동의 두통 관련 요인)

  • Objectives : This descriptive study was conducted to examine the degree of stress, coping styles, communication with the mother and depression between headache-suffering children and headache-free children and to explore predicted factors for headache occurrence in children. Method : The subjects of this study consisted of 196 headache-free children and 107 headache-suffering children. They were 4th-6th graders of an elementary school in T city. The instruments in this study were David's stressor of children, Lazarus & Folkman's Stress Coping Style, PACI(Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory) by Barnes & Olsen and Kovac's CDI (Children's depression inventory). Data were collected from May 2 to July 16, 2004. Results : Total stress(t=-3.76, p=.035), school stress(t=-3.02, p=.001), mass media stress(t=-1.39, p=.029) and depression(t=7.62, p=.001) in headache-suffering children were significantly higher than those of headache-free children. Problem-oriented coping skills (t=1.23, p=.023), and the score of communication with the mother(t=2.32, p=.012) in headache-suffering children were lower than those of headache-free children. Logistic regression analysis (stepwise) showed that the most powerful predictor was stressors in school, followed by depression, stressors in mass media and communication with the mother. Conclusions: This study revealed that important factors such as the degree of school stress, depression, the degree of mass media stress, communication with the mother and problem-oriented coping skills should be controlled for reducing of headaches in children.

Communications and Family Cohesion & Adaptability Between Mother and Adolescent (어머니와 청소년자녀가 지각하는 의사소통유형과 가족 응집성 및 적응성)

  • The purposes of this study were to find out general trends of mother-adolescent communication patterns and to analyze communication variables which influence on family cohesion and adaptability. The subjects were 386 high school students and their mothers living in Kwang-ju. PACI and FACESIII were used to measure mother-adolescent communication patterns and family cohesion and adaptability. The results are as follows : Mothers highly perceived open communication pattern with adolescents, but adolescents perceived close communication more. Communication patterns, family cohesion and adaptability showed significant differences in according to communication variables as communication time and satisfaction. Family cohesion and adaptability were significantly different in according to communication patterns. Especially, open communication pattern between mothers and adolescents was the most important in order to increase family cohesion and adaptability.

A Study on the Communication Styles and satisfaction between Adolescents and Mothers, Perceived by Adolescents (청소년기 자녀가 지각한 어머니와의 커뮤니케이션 유형 및 만족도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out significant factors which have effects on the communition styles and adolescents' satisfaction in communication through the investigation of the communication styles between adolescents and mothers and the degree of adolescents' satisfaction in communication. The subjects of this study were 44 high school students in Seoul Statistical methods emploid to analyze the data were percentage, frequency, mean, X2-test, F-test and multiple regression. The results were as follows; 1) The communication styles between adolescents and mothers were divided into 4 grpups, and the proportion of these 4 groups were mutual open style 40.3% mutual closed style 34.5%, adolescent closed-mother open style 13.1% and adolescent open-mother closed style 12.2%. 2) Factors influencing the communication styles were sex (p<.001), communication time (p<.001) and atomosphere of families(p<.001). 3) The degree of adolescents' satisfaction in communication were significantly different depending on the communication style (p<.001), sex (p<.001), communication time (p<.001) educational level of father (p<.05), employment status of mother (p<.05), atomosphere of famlies (p<.001) and economic condition of families (p<.001). 4) The most significant variables influencing the degree of adolescents' satisfaction were communication styles and the atomosphere of families. The groups using open communication styles were more satisfied with their communication that the groups using closed communication styles. The female adolescents were more sensitively influenced than male adolescents with these two variables.

Family Function, Parent-Child Communication, and Family Satisfaction Influencing Game Use among Korean Adolescents (가족기능, 부모-자녀 의사소통, 가족만족도와 청소년의 게임사용간의 상관성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the influential factors of family function, parent-child communication, and family satisfaction on Korean adolescents game use. Methods: The participants were 940 adolescents in Seoul. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The study variables were family function, parent-child communication, family satisfaction, and game use. Results: Game use was different by gender, age, time to spend in game during weekdays and weekend. Game use had significant negative correlations with family cohesion, family adaptability, communication with father, communication with mother, and family satisfaction. Multiple regression analysis showed that 20.3% of the game use was explained by gender, communication with mother, hours of playing games during weekdays, family adaptability, and hours of playing games during weekend. Conclusions: These results suggest that being male and lack of communication with mother, low family adaptability, game hours during weekdays and weekend can be potential risk factors for excessive game use in the adolescents, which should by considered in developing a prevention program for excessive game use focused on family factors.

Is Does Failure Mindset Transmitted through Generations?: The Dual Mediating Effects of Mother's Happiness and Mother-Adolescent Open Communication (실패 마인드셋은 세대 간 전승되는가?: 어머니의 행복감과 개방적 의사소통의 이중매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between failure mindset of the mother and adolescent, along with the mediating effects of mother's happiness and mother-adolescents (first and second-year middle school students in Seoul) open communication. For this study, self-reported data of 270 mother-adolescent dyads were analyzed using SPSS and Process macro Model 6. The results revealed that the mother's failure mindset directly predicted their adolescent's failure mindset. The mediating effect of the mother-adolescent open communication was significant, but the mediating effect of the mother's happiness was not significant. However, the mediation effect of the mother's failure mindset on the adolescent's failure mindset through mother's happiness and mother-adolescent open communication was significant. These results suggest that "failure-is-enhancing" mindset of mothers improve their positive affect and parenting skills, which contributes to developing adolescent's belief system about failure. Putting the results together, this study is significant in that it identified the intergenerational relationship of the failure mindset. Besides, the study results serve as a foundation for intervening on the adolescent's failure mindset by verifying the developmental mechanism of the failure mindset.

Effects of Children's Interests in Mothers' Native Culture and Use of Mother's Native Language on Mother-Child Relationship Satisfaction in Multi-Cultural Families (다문화 가족 자녀의 어머니 출신국가에 대한 관심 및 어머니 국가의 언어 구사능력이 자녀와 어머니의 관계 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper examined the effects of children's interests and attitudes toward mother's native culture and use of mother's native language on satisfaction of the mother-child relationship in multi-cultural families. Data from the 2012 National Survey of Multi-cultural Families demonstrate that for children aged between 9 and 12 years, their fluency and desire to speak well in the mother's native language as well as father's encouragement for using the mother's native language at home were positively associated with satisfaction of the mother-child relationship. For those aged between 13 and 18 years, mother's nationality (i.e. Southeast or South Asia) was negatively related with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Both mother's and children' communication skills, children's interests in mother's native culture, pride for mother being a foreigner, and desire to speak well in the mother's native language were positively associated with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Therefore, there is a need for foreign wives to be educated in Korean language and culture as well as opportunities for children to learn their mother's native culture and language.
